In a society not so different than ours, there is a new power, portals that are in our world that influence the way we think. When people turn 16, they are allowed to join one of three groups:

The Enlightened, who want to use this new found power to get rid of all that makes us human.

The Civs, who don't want to get in the middle of the fighting.

The Resistance, who want to preserve all that makes us human and defeat The Enlightened.

When someone joins one of these groups, they, and their families, join that group for the rest of their lives. People don't usually leave what they were born into.

Ben was born into a family of Enlightened, but he doesn't want to fight for people who want to destroy humanity. When he turns 16, he makes a choice that sets his own family against him.

Cas was born into a family of Civs, and all she wants to do is use her hacking skills for good and join The Resistance. When she turns 16, she joins The Resistance and keeps it a secret from her family, afraid to disappoint them.

But the three groups exist for a reason. Cas and Ben accidentally set forth an unexpected chain of events that may just end the world, or at least what's left of it at this point.
