We've changed

From pigtailed little girls

To young women

From grinning kindergarteners

To troublesome teenagers

We've grown

From bottom-row heights

To being as tall as our mothers

We've matured

From doll-playing princesses

To honor roll students

We've grown up together

Eleven houses apart

From that fateful first meeting

To the joys of today

We've been hardened

By grief and loss

Rejection and fear

We faced bullies together

And stood up for each other

And still do to this day

We gave dolls up

But kept the memories

We've stood by each other

Through sickness

And health

We've cried to each other

And felt no shame

But the good times

Far outnumber the bad

All the stomach aches

After laughing too much

Stick with me much longer

We've been each other's rocks

What we depend on

We've given up princesses

And our angelic demeanors

For the sassy, crazy

Perfect personalities

We've learned to embrace

We've let our bad sides come out

But still remain playful

From the days of yesterday

When we'd stay out till dark

To the days of today

Where we do bend the rules

Too young for curfews

Too old to care

We stay out late

Eating ice cream

And shave creaming sidewalks

But we've stayed the same

For better and worse

We've stayed the same people

Although much has changed

Our interests have differed

Since those first days

We've grown apart

And put ourselves together again

We've fought

Like best friends do

Only to forgive each other

After realizing our stupidity

Decided our paths

Were much better intertwined

I've been asked if we're sisters

A couple of times

But no

We aren't

Although we act like sisters

We come from opposite places

Different walks of life

But together we've done more

Than I've thought possible

We've broken down walls

Forged new friendships

Created new ties

But stuck together

For a long time

I wonder how my life

Would have different

If in fact we'd never met

But I've given up worrying

About that

We have had our little spots

Of extremely rough road

But we got through it

You and I

We know each other like

The back of our hands

We've seen all sides

Like the time we cried together

After she died

On the bus ride home

To the birthday parties of legend

Where we party into the night

We've grown up depending

On this friendship

We've been inseparable

Since that kindergarten day

When I asked for your name

And you for mine

A instant friendship was formed

When you came over that day

We've fought our own demons

Inside and out

And embraced the differences

That make us two people

We've been together

For our school days

We've grown as individuals

With the other by our side

But we don't just depend on us

Not for a few years

We have other friends

Who we love like sisters

And religions

Don't determine friendships

We share them together

But you were my first friend

(Twin sisters don't count)
