Have you ever loved someone for as long as you could remember? The type of love where you first lay your eyes upon their face and that rush of adrenalin hits you like a rock? The type of love that little children can't wrap their heads around, but they feel that connection deep inside them to this other person. The love that makes you do stupid things for their attention. That feeling. It never truly goes away, even if you haven't looked at that person for a long time. It's still there, laying dormant, waiting.
And once it's awakened, it doesn't want to go away again.
From the very moment Todd met Mavis as a young boy, he had feelings for her. At first, he didn't really grasp what they were, and only knew he liked her company and felt the need to make her pay attention to him. He does just about anything to get her to pay attention to her, such as teasing her or showing off in front of her. He'd never done much of anything like this before, and it garnered his other friends to tease him for being such a showoff, but he'd brush it off. She was the highlight of his day. Anything she'd do makes him feel excited to keep coming back. It was a constant game to him. It made even the crappiest of days with his father seem like nothing once he had made her laugh at a joke he said. The young vixen monster was his light and he hadn't yet known it.
Even when they had a rough falling out, he'd hold onto that feeling. Mistaking it for feelings he had for other people as he grew older. Never truly realizing he had found his Soulmate at a young age.
Every relationship he got into never worked out.
His first girlfriend was a chocolate lab monster. She was sweet, reminding him a lot of Mavis, so he thought she'd give a similar feeling he missed. While she didn't, he was grateful to have had a good first impression of dating.
He dated a few more girls, thinking that maybe he just missed the delicate nature of his childhood crush. Of course though, none of the girls were... particularly always delicate. The relationships he built with them ended up falling down.
So he moved onto guys, hoping to see if maybe he'd just missed the jokes he'd make that would make her laugh. Yet again, the relationships ended poorly.
Of course, in his mind, he never made the connection that he was just searching for Mavis again. He just thought he was a hopeless romantic or just flat out unlucky when it came to relationships. To him, he had only thought of his happy memories with Mavis being nothing unique. He had joked with his friends before. He did show off to them on occasion. Todd had good memories with them. But it wasn't until he and Mavis rekindled their friendship later on that he understood something was different with her. She was the first person he wanted, truly wanted, to spend almost all his time with. Of course, fate had it to where he was yet in another relationship, this time with a person he had already had a bond with. He would never want to just leave this girl to pursue Mavis, especially as the two had only just begun their rebudding relationship, but he couldn't help but adore the vixen from afar. He'd just repeat everything he did as a young boy, only with more maturity and a better understanding of his motives.
Todd would show Mavis any new trick he could do with his fire abilities.
Todd would help Mavis with her work.
Todd would help her better strengthen her own friendships with others.
Todd would tease her and joke around with her.
He'd do just about anything. Just for her to smile. To laugh. To bring back that light in his life that made his father's actions at home seem so much more bearable. All he wanted to do was elope with her.
It became increasingly obvious to his girlfriend the feelings that festered inside him, and soon, they cut it off. Not just for his sake, but so she could pursue her dreams of getting her athletic scholarship. One would think with his newfound freedom, he'd go right after Mavis, but instead... he didn't. Todd wanted to keep building their friendship up as much as possible. He didn't at all want to rush into it. Not because he didn't love her, but rather- the opposite.
She was far more delicate than she had ever been, and even if Todd didn't fully understand why, he wanted to do his best to care for her. To wait for as long as necessary before he ever asked her out. Even if it meant waiting after high school to do it, he was willing to wait for her. To be hers. It was a need for him for the both of them to become together one day, but he was patient and loving for her. Caring about her in such a deep, unselfish way.
Mavis and his relationship grew and grew every single day. He became her light and one day, they both got together. They became a couple just a few days after she graduated high school. She was his and he was hers. They both belonged together, completing the missing piece inside Todd's heart.
He was happy.
She was happy.
