  Halal is an Arabic term meaning "permissible".
It has both a general and specific meaning.
When people use the word in Islamic countries, they usually mean to say what is allowed by Islamic Law.

Subhana-alladhi sakh-khara la-na hadha wa ma kunna la-hu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbi-na la munqalibun.
Glory unto Him Who created this transportation, for us, though we were unable to create it on our own. And unto our Lord we shall return.
Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14

Rabbi Adkhilnee Mudkhala S'idqiw Wa Akhrijnee Mukhraja S'diqiw Waj-a'l Lee Mil Ladunkaa Sult'aanan Nas'eeraa
My Lord! Let my entry (to the city of Al-Madinah) be good, and likewise my exit (from the city of Makkah) be good. And grant me from You an authority to help me (or a firm sign or a proof).

Narrated Abu Musa:

A son was born to me and I took him to the Prophet (ﷺ) who named him Ibrahim, did Tahnik for him with a date, invoked Allah to bless him and returned him to me. (The narrator added: That was Abu Musa's eldest son.)

Narrated Salman bin 'Amir Ad-Dabbi:

I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying, "'Aqiqa is to be offered for a (newly born) boy, so slaughter (an animal) for him, and relieve him of his suffering."

It was narrated that 'Aishah said:
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded us to sacrifice two sheep for a boy's 'Aqiqah and one sheep for a girl."
