Chapter 10: Wedding Day
"Nikki Elvira Kratt, you get your butt back here!" her dad shouted from the ground.
"Never!" the now 8 year old called from her perch high in the trees.
Nikki could tell her dad was stressed and had a master plan to get him to relax.
"Don't make me come up there!" her dad warned. Nikki ignored him and climbed higher.
--------------------------
Chris shook his head at his daughter's actions. She was only 8 but was as smart and as rebellious as a teenager.
He began climbing the tree to go get her.
-----------------------
"Nikki you are... what is all this?" her dad asked as he reached the branch she was sitting on. She had put out a blanket and brought up some food and drinks.
"I realized you were super stressed because of the wedding and we hadn't been able to go on our daddy-daughter this month, so I decided to put together a picnic," Nikki said smiling.
"And why is it up a tree?" her dad asked as he sat down next to her.
"You always take me climbing on our dates," Nikki flipped her braid over her shoulder.
"Thank you princess," her dad pulled her into a hug.
"Your welcome," Nikki hugged him back.
=======================
"I hate dresses," Nikki said tugging on the green fabric.
"Your parents are getting married today, you should try not to look like a creature of once," her aunt Koki said tying a purple ribbon in Nikki's hair.
"Hey, just because I spend most of my time hanging upside down and climbing doesn't mean I look wild," Nikki folded her arms.
"Every picture we have of you, except for a couple, shows you covered in mud."
"Well, I am a Kratt."
-----------------------------------
Chris paced back and forth. He had never been so nervous in his life.
He had faced down poachers, villains, stampedes of wild animals, and other near death experiences without batting an eye.
But getting married? Now that had him running scared.
"Chris, sit down before you wear a hole in the floor," Martin said from his seat.
"No thanks. I don't think I could hold still," Chris said, fiddling with his tie.
--------------------------------
"Uncle Martin, hows my dad holding up?" Nikki asked, sticking her head into the room.
"Okay-ish. Hey why aren't you with Aviva?" he asked.
"Mom lost her shoes and needs your help to find them."
"Why can't Koki or Jimmy help her?"
"Aunt Koki is calming Mom down and Uncle Jimmy is setting up chairs outside."
"Still?"
"Well there is a few hundred people coming."
"Good point. But why me?"
"Cause you can find everything you look for."
"Fine but come sit with your dad and try to calm him down," Martin said and left the room.
"Nikki! Why are you in here? Did your mom call off the wedding? Is it a creature emergency?" her dad asked once he saw her.
"Mom lost her shoes and Uncle Martin went to find them, and no to your other questions," Nikki said, sitting down in the chair.
Her dad went back to pacing.
--------------------------
"Where are my shoes!?" Aviva sobbed.
"Shh, sweetheart. Martin's looking right now," Koki comforted.
Aviva sniffled and Koki handed her another tissue.
"Found them!" Martin called, holding up the pair of white hiking boots.
-------------------------
"Dad, your bow tie is crooked," Nikki pointed out.
Her dad grunted.
She jump out of her seat and walked over to him. She then reached up and straightened her dad's bow tie.
"There you go."
"Thanks, princess."
=================
Nikki clapped as the song ended and the crowd disperse.
"This next song is one for all the proud Papas out there tonight. Grab your little girl and start dancing," her uncle Jimmy said from the DJ booth.
"Nikki, may I have this dance?" her dad asked.
"Yes, Papa," she said taking his hand walked to the dance floor.
Her dad let her stand on his feet and the pair twirled around to the music, both laughing and smiling.
