Chapter 01:
Sweat formed on the palms of her hands as her heart beat thunderously in her chest. With her eyes squeezed closed, she impatiently waited.
Click.
Clack.
Click.
Clack.
Hearing the clicking and clacking of boots retreating further and further away from her room until she could no longer hear them, the young girl relied on another sense.
She placed her hand on her blanket covered chest, breathing slowly in and out. The child calmed herself. From her detection, he was still near.
After several minutes, her eyelids lifted revealing her crimson red eyes. The seven year old excitedly threw the purple satin blanket off her and rolled out the bed. She commenced in un-buttoning her pink pajama shirt that was littered with cupcakes, cakes, ice-cream, crowns, unicorns and other girly things of the like. Next were her matching pants.
She trotted over to the white intricate wardrobe closet with golden inlays and opened it. Tipping on her toes, the red eyed girl reached for a sleeveless white one piece dress embellished with black linings, a hood and dark blue left-chest pocket that was on the hanger and took it down. When she was done slipping on the so call 'livestock clothing' Reginhard had told her about, she rummaged through her drawer, taking out and putting on a choker that was the same hue as the dress' pocket with a silver tag.
Then, she got the bag she had already packed and ball that had been tucked away in her toy box.
Nariko Tanizaki was ready to set out once again to the area of Sanguinem where the other humans lived. Before sneaking out, Nariko chanted with a smile. "This time I will make some friends!" The red diamond shaped earring on her right ear glistened.
She was going to succeed.
••••
The very same girl who wanted to make friends hugged her knees as hot tears brewed in her eyes. She thought, 'why is it so hard to make friends? It's nothing like in the books I have read or on the recorded movies I've watched.'
When she had first arrived, Nariko had seen a group of boys that looked around ten years old and had asked them if they had wanted to play ball with her. The boys had taken the ball and had loudly discriminated, "no girls allowed!".
Her second try had been with a clique of girls with a ten to twelve age range. They had all been chatting about who they had a crush on and who was the cutest boy. Once the girls had heard Nariko didn't have a crush, they had all sent each other looks, then they had all made excuses, leaving her alone.
Her third try had been with a group kids who were related to one another, telling by looks alone. When she had tried talking with them, they had completely ignored her. She had heard them murmuring about her crimson hued eyes which they had found similar to those of a vampire and had been disgusted by them. She had even heard the one who looked the oldest of them say. "Keep away from her. I've heard rumors about a girl with creepy vampire like eyes who should be around her age by now from some seniors. They say she's nothing but trouble. And whatever you do, don't talk to her, play with her or befriend her."
Even after three fails, Nariko didn't allow this phase her. But after so many failures that exceeded on how many fingers she could count on, it left her in this state.
Kyoto's underground vampire city was now overflowing with children. Reginhard had told her the reason why it was so, was because a virus had spread over the world, causing all those who were over thirteen years of age to perish. Nariko had waited six months after this devastating event to pursue in making friends again.
From since the seven year old girl could remember, she was always in Reginhard's manor in this place called Sanguinem. And from what Reginhard had divulged, she had been in that manor from since she was a newborn, with him taking care of her. She had asked if he was her father and he had replied no. When she had inquired about her parents and family, he had declared they were all dead and he would tell her more once she was older. Once she had asked about making friends and if he was her friend, he had voiced, "you shouldn't. They would only come to loathe you in the near future. Humans are not suited to be friends with you. And I am but a caretaker, a mere servant for you to utilize, Nariko-sama."
But she was a human. How come humans were not suited to be friends with her? Was there something wrong with her? Was the thing that was wrong with her the reason why she was being raised by a vampire?
'Can I really not make friends? Was what Regin-kun said right?' Her long black eyelashes with a slight shade of dark purple that protected her crimson red eyes trembled. 'I guess I should give-' Nariko's thoughts were interrupted.
"Are you crying because you don't have no one to play with?" A voice asked her.
Through her blurred vision Nariko saw a boy with light blonde hair and azure blue eyes. He looked eight or nine years old.
Nariko nodded.
The blonde haired boy gently smiled, "then I'll play with you and be your friend! Actually my whole family would! My name is Mikaela Hyakuya. You can call me Mika."
"..... Erm. Would you really be my friend and play with me? Your family too?" She paused before asking.
He nodded his head. "Of course!" Mikaela held out his hand. "Your name?"
Nariko smiled, taking his hand. "Nariko, Nariko Tanizaki."
The boy from the Hyakuya Orphanage helped Nariko up, pulling her along. "Then let's go Nari-chan!"
Following Mikaela to where the rest of the children who carried the last name Hyakuya were, Nariko's smile got bigger and bigger. She softly thought, 'Mika, thank you.'
The earring on her ear gleamed.
