Chapter 8: Truth and Trust

Another splash of water fell on her head, then another. It continued until all the soap was gone from her body. Mia was in the bathroom with Widowmaker and Sombra in the background, after her ballet lesson, Widowmaker said she was good and a fast learner, the older women realized she still hasn't  took a bath that's what they're doing... Well that's what Widowmaker was doing.

"I thought you would help me?" the sniper asked, irritably to the hacker. Sombra just smiled.

"I wanted you get some experience" she answered. Amélie rolled her eyes but grabbed the towel next to her and proceeded to dry her. Once done she picked her up and carried to her room. They were lucky to buy her clothes before kidnapping her.

She put Mia down, she wanted to dress her up but the little girl made gestures that she can do it herself. That made her relieved a bit and left so she can change in privacy.

Mia smiled and changed. That Widowmaker lady was nice if you get through with her, and Sombra was pretty and kinda cool too. But that Reaper guy... She hasn't seen him since Sombra took her to her room, she wanted to learn more of that guy. Sure he looks dangerous, but hey she's still a kid, she gets curious.

Mia got dressed in a black shirt with red rose in the front, khaki shorts and black sandals. There was a knock on the door, it opened to reveal Sombra. The hacker looked down at her and squealed.

"Awwww so cute!" she got down and hugged her. The older girl pulled back and carried her.

"Let's go show aunt Widow."

Widowmaker was standing in the hallway, still thinking on how that actually managed to make her feel again. It was shocking at first and she didn't like it. But, seeing the innocence in her green eyes and her adorable expression her her face? it made her heart warm again and she smiled softly.

Sombra was right, she did love her.

"Oh aunt Widow~" Sombra sang out. The woman turned around to see Sombra carrying Mia, with a smile on her face.

"Look isn't she cute?" Widowmaker took in her appearance and smiled.

"Yes she does."

"Come on. We still haven't finish the show" Sombra reminded. All three of them went to the living room.

Turns out the 'When they cry' was on a marathon and they get to watch all the episodes. Sombra would flinch on every death, while Widowmaker watched in slight interest, this was actually good. Mia was very engrossed by it, normal children her age would be scared, traumatize even, but not her. The mystery in the anime was appealing and the different scenarios were very  interesting.

They were too busy watch to notice Reaper behind them. He couldn't believe what he was seeing, Widowmaker was bonding with the girl, and she looked like was having a pleasant time.

"Ahem" all three of them turned their heads in surprise.

"Oh hi Reapy" Sombra greeted cheerfully, Widowmaker nodded to his direction. Both of them turned their attention back to the T.V, but the little girl kept her eyes on him.

Mia's eyes wandered, memorizing everything in this man. Up close he really is intimidating, especially how easily he towered her, Sombra and Widowmaker. But she was more interested on his mask. What was he hiding?

"What are you looking at?" his voiced snapped her out and realized he must have saw her staring at him. She bit her lip and turned away.

"I'll be going. Just turned down the volume" he said before leaving.

Mia glanced back at his retreating figure and tried to focus on the anime but can't. Finally the little girl took a deep breathe grabbed the note pad and pencil, then hooped down the couch and headed to where Reaper was going. The hacker and sniper noticed this, Sombra and Widowmaker were bother looking at her then at each other. Sombra broke the silence.

"Oh Dios, espero que ella sobreviva."

~~~~~~
Mia navigated through the hallway, but couldn't find the cloaked man. Just as she was going to turn away, she saw a door slightly ajar. Mia knew going into people's rooms was a bad thing, but curiosity can't be helped. She hesitantly knocked. No answer. She carefully went inside.
Plain was to describe the room. The walls were white, like the rest of the house and brown carpeting. There was a dresser and a nightstand, the bed was a mess, as if they had no time to do it. There were boxes of trinkets and photos in the corner of the room. But something on top of them caught her eyes.
Mia moved closer until she was in front of it. It was a grey beanie. She put the pad and pencil on the bed checking it out. It felt soft on her fingers, once she put it on it also felt nice to wear it. She glanced at the photos, one of them caught her eye. She picked it up.
There were people in the photo she'd recognized., Like her Mama, uncle Torbjorn, uncle Jesse and her Opa. But some she couldn't. She stared thoughtfully at the man with the hood, he wasn't smiling like her uncle Torbjorn, but something about was different. She just can't place her finger on it.
"What are you doing here?" a familiar voice rasp.
Mia snapped her head so fast she thought she could have had whiplash. Reaper stood in the entrance, glowering at the girl. His eyes trailed from her to the photo in her hands. He took long strides and roughly took it from her hands and tossed back it to the box.
"Get out" he demanded. "And take that off."
Though taking off the beanie, the little girl held her ground. She looked at him, defiance shown in her eyes but also some understanding. He was confused, why wasn't she scared of him?
"What do you want?" she went to the bed, grabbed the the pan and pencil and began to write down. Once she was done, she gave it to him.
What happened to you?
He froze. Why.. Why was she so concerned about him? They kidnapped her and she was concerned about him? It made him thought of someone, she was so similar to that person. Looking back at the photo wistful and bittersweet memories stirred his mind.
"Do you really want to know?" she just walked to the bed sat on it and patted the side next to her. He took this as a yes. With some hesitation he told her.
He told her he was born in Los Angeles, he lived with his parents and his sister, but lost them during Omnic crisis, he told her joined the United States military when he was 18, where he achieved a senior officer position. He achieved veteran status, and was highly respected.
"Something I kinda missed."
He said he earned a coveted position in the government's controversial and still-classified (but widely acknowledged) "soldier enhancement program." Military scientists shaped Reyes and other inductees into the perfect soldiers, blessed with superhuman speed, strength, and agility.
"That was their mistake" he said while chuckling.
He said him and his fellow augmented soldiers soon put their abilities to use with the advent of the Omnic Crisis. As governments tried and failed to neutralize the omnics, the United Nations was busy forming an international task force called Overwatch. This small, experimental group would bring together the best and brightest from around the world to wage asymmetrical warfare against the robots. Overwatch's short list of prospective agents included two members of the soldier enhancement program: him and Jack Morrison, whose work ethic and courage caught the eye of the military brass back home. He told her him and Morrison became fast friends, despite their different backgrounds, and decided to join Overwatch together. He said he was given leadership of the group, but it was Morrison who would have a greater impact on the group in the long term. He brought out the best in the people around him and helped mold Overwatch's diverse (and sometimes conflicting) agents into a cohesive fighting force. In unity, they found the strength to defeat the robots and end the Omnic Crisis.
"Bullshit." he growled. The girl jumped slightly at this.
Morrison, because of the key role he played in shaping the group he said, was given the position of strike commander by the UN, the first, official commanding officer of Overwatch. Reyes was passed over in the process, which created a rift between the two men.
He told her he became the commander of Overwatch's Blackwatch unit. After a sting operation that resulted in the apprehension of Jesse McCree (a member of the Deadlock Gang, he visited the man, as he was impressed with his expert marksmanship and resourcefulness. He told her he gave McCree the choice between rotting in a maximum security prison, or joining Blackwatch. McCree chose the latter he gave him personal instruction.
Another individual that he told her that he recruited into Blackwatch was disgraced geneticist Moira O'Deorain, as he wanted someone who could advise him on genetics. O'Deorain's experiments on him gave him supernatural abilities he would later demonstrate as "Reaper."
Ultimately, he said that Overwatch met its end through a combination of accusations that tainted the organization's reputation, and himself. Officially, he and Morrison were killed in the blast that destroyed Overwatch's Swiss headquarters, an event the UN ruled as an accident. In reality, Overwatch had become split down the middle, with him leading a rebellion against Morrison's leadership. As a battle was waged within the base, their fighting triggered an explosion that destroyed the facility, and apparently took him and Morrison into the inferno with it.
"It was all his fault" he growled. "He was the who started. If I was the commander, then none of this would happened."
"I.. Wouldn't become like this" Mia looked at himsympathetically before writing something else on the pad before handing it to him.
Can.. Can I see what's under the mask?
What? She... She wanted to see what under his mask? He couldn't believe it, first the concern now this? What his wrong with her?
He was about to tell to get out again, when he caught himself staring at her owl like eyes. Deep pools of emerald tugged something in his heart. Something he had not felt in a long time. With heavy sigh he removed his mask.
When he lowered his mask Mia first saw was two glowing red eyes staring down at her. Scars littered the ashen gray face as black smoky tendrils emit out from him.
Gabriel expected her to be frighten, scream, be disgusted, flinch even. But he didn't expect her to write something else in the pad and handed it to him. He read what it is.
Does it hurt?
He was stumped at that. No one asked that question, not even himself. He turned back to the girl, who was waiting for an answer.
" ... No.. It doesn't" he said slowly. Mia smiled and hugged him.
He flinched at the contact. What is wrong with this girl? She's hugging death itself, why would she do that?
But something inside tugged his heartstrings.
Something he hadn't felt in years.
It made him feel..Human.
Without thinking he hugged her back. Relishing her touch, she was the first person who wanted to comfort him and made him feel wanted. Without thinking he began to sing her a Spanish lullaby.
He felt her go limp on his arms, immobile actually. Fearing she'd died because of him he checked her heartbeat. He never felt so relieved to hear it beating steadily. Jeez, this girl sleeps like corpse.
He rearranged their position, not before getting the beanie back placing it on her head. He gently put laid her beside him, holding her close before falling asleep himself.
~~~~~~~

"Well look at that.." Sombra and Widowmaker were getting worried for Mia so they went to check what was she up to. They saw Reaper's door unlocked and hoped she wasn't there. What surprise them was both him and Mia sleeping together, holding on her and wearing his beanie.

"I never thought to see him like this" Windowmaker confessed Sombra nodded in agreement.

"Yeah but's it's a nice change" they both left them in peace.

 After when they both woke, the rest of the day went nice for Mia. Turns out, Reaper was a good cook, he took pride on watching her stuffing her face with cheese quesadillas. Sombra took her back to her room so they can find something else to watch,  she liked that Adventure time, The Amazing World Of Gumball, Gravity falls, RWBY, Future diary and Fairy tail, and proceeded to download every season of those shows. Finally, Widowmaker took her to her room to practice her ballet again.

But it didn't last long when  familiar buzz rang through Sombra's computer. The hacker cursed in Spanish, before calling out Widowmaker and Reaper. Widowmaker told Mia to stay in her before going out. Once they were here she answered the call, revealing Akande's face.

"Ah finally" he said in his thick accent. "Do you have the child?"

"Yes we do" Reaper answered, before asking "What are you going to do with her?"

Doomfist raised a brow. "I did not think you would actually care for her."

Realizing his mistake he coughed before replying. "I am just curious to see why you need her."

"I'm afraid that is classified even for you" the trio frowned at this. They all knew Reaper was part of the council, why keep it a secret from him?

"Just make sure she's ready. Moira would want her to be healthy when she's brought to Talon. Doomfist out" with that he ended the call. They all breathe a sigh in relief. Too close.

"I wonder what's he planning?" Sombra asked. "It must be big to keep it a secret from Reapy."

"Whatever it is it better be good" Reaper grumbled. Widowmaker turned around to go back to Mia, when she froze in shock.

"No" this caught the attention of the other two. They turned around and felt their eyes widen.

Mia was there.

The look of betrayal on her face was priceless. Her eyes were wide and were already forming tears, her hands clutched the pad and pen so hard she could have broke the pencil. Mia was only going out to get a glass of water when she heard a stranger's voice, she paused to listen. Now she wished she didn't.

They talked about planning to use her for something they won't tell her. But that wasn't the worst part. She found out, the people she was beginning to like, were apart of Talon. The same organization that took her parents. Her heart shattered.

The silence was unbearable. It crushed their souls to see her like this. This little girl made them care again, and now.. It looks like they broke her heart.

"Mia" Reaper began. "Let me explain."

But she would have none of it. She ran as fast she could. Mia could hear their calls to come back, to apologize. But she won't have she hurriedly ran to the bathroom and got on the step stool they bought and locked it. She got back down, crying softly in her hands.

Damn it. They knew they were fucked up when Mia ran ignoring their calls. It took them a time to process before running after her. Huh, who knew the girl can run? But they were too late as she already locked the door.

"I told you buying that stool was a bad idea" Widowmaker hissed to Sombra who just stuck her tongue out. The sniper clicked her tongue in annoyance, before softening her gaze at the door, she gave a gentle knock.

"Mia, chéri please open" no response.

"Mia come on. If you're asking about Reaper caring about you, then it's true. It's been years that he actually cared for someone" Sombra added, hoping it would ease her. But all she got was silence, she slumped. Suddenly a note was passed under the door, she picked it up an dread it out loud.

You guys work for Talon.

They did not like where this was going.

"Yes and?" Reaper asked. Another note was slid, this time he got it.

They killed my family.

Oh.

Gabriel clutched hardly at the piece of paper. No wonder she hated Talon. They were cause why she lived in Overwatch in the first place. He took a deep breathe before talking.

"Mia. I know that you're upset at Talon, but don't take it on use okay? We weren't there when you're parents die, hell we don't even know why they were there. So please be reasonable."

The sniper and hacker looked at him surprised. They never expected this from him.

There was silence. Before hearing some noise from the other side and the door being unlocked. Reaper opened it, revealing a tear stained, sniffling and puffy eyed girl. He gently picked her up.

"Shh.. Shh. It's alright princesa. I'm here, I'm here" he gently rocked and sang the lullaby in her ear.

Sombra and Widowmaker stepped back and watch. Seeing the cold hearted mercenary Reaper, reduced to a warm and loving father to this girl.

Mia, now feeling a lot better, stopped her crying and wiped her eyes. She motion to Reaper to set her down, which he did. She awkwardly stared at the floor shuffling her feet.

"So... You're not mad at us anymore" she lifted her head..... and smiled and shook her head.

They smiled at the girl. Sombra picked her up. "Come on pequeño buho, I downloaded all the shows you like time for a marathon" she announced before dashing to her room.

Mia smiled broadly. Even though these people were part of the organization that killed her family, it's good to know there was some good in them.
