Chapter 2: Lost & Found
Mia was with her parents in their lab, reading. It's been 4 years since they moved to Ilios, Mia was 5 months old when moved. Her father said it will be good for her and her sister, saying it will connect them to their roots, what he said is true since Mia was already developing an accent. But that wasn't the only reason. It was because her parents were recently offered positions here, and her older sister Maya had a project of her own, a rejuvenating fountain, something she was working on when she was a baby.
She was merely sitting on one of the tables, reading butterflies, hers and Maya's favorite animal. They loved how each on was different, each one with it's own color and unique patterns.
"Mia" she heard her mother's voice. The young girl looked up to see her mother's beautiful emerald eyes filled with warmth and kindness that obviously radiated in her smile. "I brought you a snack" Morrigan held a box of mango juice and bowl of baby carrots, her favorite.
"Thank you mama" she thanked, placing her book next to her and took the food. After a few bites and sips she heard her mother speak again.
"Mia can you help me identify the different species of butterflies please?" Mia nodded eagerly. Even at a young age, Mia is a prodigy, able to understand the concepts of all kinds of science from natural to formal, Mia would go out from time to time to do her own research, but she excelled in alchemy, her sister's main line of work. Mia would read her books, ask her questions and even help her with her research.
Finally Mia finished her food. She was about to give the bowl and box to her mother, when they heard an explosion. Mia dropped the items in surprise. The bowl crashed to the floor and broke into many pieces but Mia didn't care, she was scared on what's happening right now.
Her mother quickly picked her up and ran to find her father. Mia buried her face in her mother's chest.
What's going on?
What's happening?
Are they gonna be okay?
All these questions ran through her little head but didn't asked. Mia hid her face in her mother's chest, she heard explosions and gun fires all around her, she couldn't see anything, but her mother did. Morrigan ran through the halls, searching for her husband. Everything was in chaos, all around her, she tried the best she could to avoid the explosions. The heat threaten to burn her face, but she didn't care. Getting her daughter out was more important.
"Christopher!" she shouted turning another right corridor. "Christopher where are you!?"
"I'm here!" cried the De Nikos patriarch. He stumbled out of the security room and firmly grabbed his wife's hand and ran.
"Christopher what's going on!?" Mia heard her mother shouted through the noise.
"Talon!" she heard her mother shout in surprise.
"What business do they want here!?" Morrigan was beyond confuse. They study about life and living organisms, for them it's a waste of time.
"I don't know but we have to keep moving!" they increased their speed once they heard voices. They kept moving, Morrigan and Christopher felt their legs burning but they didn't care, getting their daughter out and finding Maya was their top priority.
They were finally rearing the exit when they heard gun fires behind them. Morrigan dared to look back, and she instantly regretted it. 3 to 5 Talon agnets were blasting as many bullets as they can, Morrigan felt one graze on her shoulder, she hissed and turned back ahead they were so near. But she could hear them getting closer, suddenly an idea came to mind.
It was risky but at least Mia was safe, she glanced at Christopher it was brief but she knew he thought the same thing. With all the strength she could muster Morrigan threw Mia as far as she could.
Mia landed harshly on the ground with thud. She struggled to get him with her hurting bum. Mia heard more gunfire, she looked up, just in time to see her parents with bullet holes on their chests. The young girl was doing whatever willpower she had not to cry and tried to walk to them, but her father raised a trembling hand.
"M-Mia.. lea-ve us" he coughed. "Please go and find you're sister" her mother said before shutting the door. All Mia could hear were more gunfires from where she stood. Mia turned before sprinting, she could see Talon agents from a distance. She thanked her lucky stars that they didn't noticed her.
Mia finally reached the facility where her sister worked. Good news is all the fighting was outside, bad news was the place crumbling down due to the explosions.
"Maya! Maya!"
"I'm here Mimi!" her voice was near so she kept shouting and her sister kept responding. It wasn't long before they found each other. Maya was clutching her journal filled with research and her backpack. It was red and gold, though it might have looked normal if it wasn't for the tubes sticking out of it.
Maya came stumbling almost dropping her things. The older girl coughed before grabbing her sister's hand and ran to the exit. It was hard since everything was going down and occasionally they would trip but get back up.
They haven't even find exit yet, when Maya heard the ceiling. She looked up and saw it was already giving away. She knew either one of them had to survive.
Maya threw her things away, before throwing Mia. Far as she could. "Maya what a-" she didn't finished as she saw the the ceiling fell on her.
And just like that everything stopped around Mia as she saw her only family she had left, crushed by concrete. Ran to her side and tried to push the debris of her but no avail.
"M-Mia" Maya started.
"No! please save you're breathe I'm gonna get out of here" the young girl said trying very hard to set her free and to fight back the tear. "Yo-you're g-gonna be okay. Just please stay with me" her hands were starting to hurt and came close to bleeding. Two hands gently took a hold on her own and removed them from the debris. Mia trailed towards it and found out it was her sister's.
Maya gave her a gentle but weak smile. "Mia it's okay" her voice was hoarse "Don't worry about me. Go and take my journal and backpack. Show the world what you can do, make them be in awe with the discoveries you find" Mia furiously shook her head.
"NO! this are you'res. I can't take credit" she could practically see the life slip within her eyes.
"Do it... for... me" her hands went limp and her skin became pale and cold.
"Maya?" she tried to shake her awake but no avail.
"MAYA!" finally with everything what happened today, she cried. Cried like nothing before. This was too much for a 4 year old.
~Time Skip~
Mercy zipped through the halls of the crumbled facility. Talon had already killed two people here and she was trying to find survivors. Mercy had no idea what they wanted here but she opted it wasn't good.
She kept on moving until she stopped. What she saw broke her heart. A woman in golden blonde hair was under a pile of rubble and by the looks of it she was too late to heal her. Next to her was a little girl with fiery hair that reached to her neck and snow white skin, she wore a dress consisting of a pale beige chest section and straps over the shoulder. The rest of the dress is yellow in color with a pattern of many flowers, these being pink, dull red, orange, blue, and green and she had beige sandals. Mercy moved slowly to the girl and bent down.
"Hello young one" she said as softly as she could. The girl didn't respond.
"Where are you're parents?" no answer.
"Do you know this person?" this time however she nodded.
"Is she you're mother?" she slowly shook her head
"Is she you're sister?" a slow nod was given.
"Can you speak?" Mercy gently took her face and turned it towards, and what she saw surprised her. She had beautiful big emerald eyes that seem to shine, but that wasn't the thing that surprised her.
It was that the child's face a a void of any emotion.
