45| PALMER X

[ Chapter Forty-Five ]

"Sara, Ava, come in. Where are you guys?" Nate asked in the comm as the other Legends all stood around in the cargo bay trying to figure out what to do.

"Hey, Nate. Can't talk right now." Sara answered and paused, "Gary says hi. And we are at book club. Move on to plan B."

"Um, what's plan B?" Zari asked.

"I only listen for my name." Mick said.

"I assume it's like plan A, except with less people." Nate answered.

"Yeah no way are we going to manage this without Sara and Ava." Myra said, leaning against the wall, "I mean, no offense."

"Well, without the Captain and the clone, the Bureau's a suicide mission." Mick agreed.

"See." Myra pointed at him.

"Okay. We need to sneak into Palmer X, do some recon, find out what Neron is up to." Zari told them.

"Now that sounds like a plan Z." Charlie grinned.

The Legends separated into two groups, Nate and Zari in one and Charlie, Mick and Myra in the other.

Charlie squeezed past people in the crowd at Palmer X a little nervously.

"What's wrong with you?" Mick demanded.

"Yeah, are you okay Charlie?" Myra asked.

"Well a room full of people fearful of magical creatures just makes me a little bit fearful, all right?" Charlie answered.

"Hey, it'll be okay." Myra promised as they took a row in the back.

"Good evening D.C., and welcome to PalmerX 2019." Neron stepped onto the stage.

Everyone but the Legends applauded.

"Now you're all probably wondering, what in the heck is Ray Palmer doing back in the public eye? Well, folks, for the past two years I have been hunting magical creatures." Neron stated.

People murmured and laughed.

"Maybe if people don't believe him, this nightmare will end." Myra mumbled.

"Hang with me here." Neron stated, "I have created an exosuit capable of combating the most ferocious of their kind. But I can't do it alone. I need your help. I need you to help me find these creatures, creatures that may be hiding right here amongst us."

"He doesn't know we're here, right?" Myra said, shooting a panicked look at Charlie, as Charlie reached out her hand for hers.

"Now everyone take out your smartphones. I have created a small, simple app, that will change the world. And I want you all to download it right now. The app is called Eyes. Now, on Eyes, you will be able to share real-time, life-saving monster sightings. Share them, and I will be there to save you." Neron explained, "Remeber, the power is in the Pal(mer) of your hands."

A woman stood up, "You really expect us to believe monsters exist? I thought you were going to offer us proof."

"Thank you, Cindy. You are absolutely right." Neron smiled, "Here is your proof."

Two men from the Bureau led Mona onto the stage.

"Shit." Charlie cursed.

"Now, this may look like a helpless hipster who should be working at a bookstore, but believe me, she is something altogether more dangerous." Neron said, "Take a good, long look at her-Mona Wu. You saw her on the street, you wouldn't think twice. But she has a strange and violent condition brought about when she fell in love with a repulsive creature. Come on Mona. I promised these fine people a show. Let's not keep them waiting."

"Don't do it Mona." Myra whispered under her breath.

Neron whispered something to her that made her suddenly drop to the floor and change into the Kaupe.

"Folks, proof of the world's very first werewolf." Neron stated.

People started screaming and running as Mona pushed the Bureau guards aside. The Legends all jumped up from their seats and started for the stage but they didn't get to it as suddenly Mick and Nate disappeared.

"She made him disappear." A woman yelled and pointed at Zari.

"Come on." Charlie grabbed Myra's hand and yanked her towards the door.

"We can't leave Z." Myra said, trying to pull loose from Charlie.

"We won't." Charlie promised, "We just have to make sure we don't get caught first."

"Well, what do we have here?" Neron asked, as he looked at Zari, "More magic in the audience?"

"She's one of them!" A man pointed at Zari, but several other people looked at Zari in confusion.

"He's right. I am." Zari said, and blasted the man with her totem, knocking others over.

"She's a witch. Witch. Witch." Neron said, and gestured to the audience, to try and get them to repeat it.

Everyone started chanting as Zari backed up and escaped towards the exit. Charlie and Myra met her there as Myra opened up a portal, "Come on. Let's get out of here."
