22| THE KAUPE IS LOOSE IN MEXICO CITY

[ Chapter Twenty-Two ]

❝Look, I know I shouldn't question your judgement but what if Mona is telling the truth?❞

"What the hell is going on?" Myra asked, as she stepped out of the kitchen, hearing commotion from Zari in the hallway

"The Kaupe is missing." Zari responded as she rushed into the lab.

"What?" Myra asked, following her, "How did he escape?"

"Apparently Mona let him out." Zari said as she sat down at the computer.

Myra raised an eyebrow in curiosity, "Mona?" She shook her head, "No, there's no way."

"Well, that's what Sara said. They're going to bring her back here now. Unfortunately for us, the Kaupe went through a portal and we have no idea where he went. But if I can find the portal through recent courier activity, I can probably find where he went." Zari, said furiously typing.

Myra sat down on a stool at her side, sipping on her latest cup of coffee.

"Damn it." Zari cursed, as she grabbed her tablet.

"No luck?" Myra asked, turning to her right as the door to the lab slid open and Sara, Mick, and Ray marched in along with Mona.

"Any hits?" Sara asked, immediately walking over to Zari.

Zari shook her head, "I tried to isolate the portal from today's Courier activity but so far, no dice. It would help if I had the actual Courier."

Sara reached into her pocket and dropped the broken Courier onto the desk, "Here you go."

"Okay, never mind." Zari responded.

"So, we have a vicious monster on the loose and no idea where it might have disappeared to." Sara sighed.

"He's not a vicious monster." Mona protested, "People just assume that because of the way he looks. He's a demigod. He used to be a king."

Mick pointed a gun at her but Ray stepped in front of her, "Hey, what are you doing?"

"I'm seeing if this thing works on her mouth." Mick responded.

"Seriously, Mick?" Myra asked, crossing her arms.

"How about we just give our guest the dignity of hearing her story first?" Ray asked.

Mick groaned and left the lab.

"I'm telling you. The Men in Black are behind all of this. They're framing me so they can keep hurting the magical creatures." Mona responded.

"Hurting them how?" Zari asked.

"I don't know." Mona shook her head, "But Konane was terrified when they came for him. I was just trying to help him."

Zari, Sara and Myra all exchanged looks.

"Look, Mona. We saw the security footage and there were no Men in Black." Sara responded, walking over to her, "Just you."

"Well, they must have altered the footage to hide the truth. I'm like Mulder and those guys are the shadow government covering their tracks." Mona protested, "It's a conspiracy! The truth is out there!"

"Okay, okay Fox. Take a breath." Ray tried to calm her down.

Myra got up and walked over to her, "We'll figure this out, Mona."

"Yeah, we believe you. Right, Sara?" Ray asked, looking at her.

Sara paused for a moment but then answered, "Yes. We do. And we are going to get to the bottom of this, but first, we need to find the Kaupe before he hurts himself. Can you help us do that?"

Mona nodded.

"Okay." Sara nodded and then motioned for Zari and Myra to leave the lab with her.

The three walked down the hallway, in silence until Zari spoke up.

"So, I'll go to the Bureau and do some digging?" Zari asked, Sara.

"What? No." Sara responded, "I need you on the hunt for that monster."

"But you said-" Zari protested, looking confused.

"Exactly what I needed to say. That girl is clearly bonkers, but the Kaupe trusts her and we need her as bait." Sara answered.

"What the hell, Sara?" Myra shook her head at her Captain, "Look, I know I shouldn't question your judgement but what if Mona is telling the truth?"

Zari nodded, "Yeah, what if there really is a cover up at the Bureau?"

"Then Ava would know about it and she wouldn't allow it." Sara protested.

Zari and Myra exchanged a look but Gideon interrupted before they could speak, "Captain. I have found a lead on our missing Kaupe. In Mexico City, 1961, an unidentified drug cartel member was found dead, apparently the work of a wild animal non-indigineous to the region."

"That must be him." Sara nodded.

Zari looked pleadingly at Sara and Sara sighed, "All right. Fine. Do some digging through the footage but keep your head down. We don't want to raise any red flags."

"Got it." Zari nodded and looked at Myra, "You coming?"

"You're better at hacking then I am, Z. And one Legend at the Bureau won't raise suspicion. But two?" Myra responded, "I'm better off here."

"Alright, I'll alert you if I find anything." Zari responded as she turned away.

"All right. Gideon rally the troops. We are going to Mexico" Sara said.

"Okay, I'm picking up a magical signature this way." Sara announced, as they walked through Mexico City.

Mona, Mick, Sara, John, and Myra had gone into Mexico City to look for the Kaupe, while Charlie and Ray stayed behind on the ship.

"As far as hiding places go, smack bang in the middle of a major city would not be my top choice." John said from beside Myra.

Myra nodded, "Yeah, especially when you're not human. I'm sure someone's noticed."

"What is this place?" Mona asked looking around.

Loud commotion came from across the street from where the group was and Sara led them inside.

"Oh it sounds like a real party." John commented, as they walked down the stairs and into a large basement area, where there was a fight ring.

"As long as there's beer." Mick responded.

"Honestly this isn't really my cup of tea but I'm with Mick on this one." Myra commented.

"The detector must be wrong." Mona said as she looked around, "There's no way Konane could hide in a place like this."

"Are you sure about that?" Sara asked, suddenly coming to a halt, reading a poster, "El Lobo. The Kaupe isn't hiding." She looked at all of them, "He's the main event."
