05| LET'S NOT BURN THE WITCH

[ Chapter Five ]

❝Okay, maybe you don't deserve to burn.❞

[Witch Hunt]

Constantine, Zari, Sara and Myra gathered in the library to try and figure out what to do next. Myra was sitting on the floor rifling through a book of Constantine's while snacking on carrots.

"Damn it." Constantine suddenly interrupted and they all looked up, "The godmother was telling the truth. We can't send her to hell without sending Prudence down with her. Bloody fairy godmothers. They're like parasites who feed off their hosts."

"Well, we'll find some other way." Myra suggested, "I mean there's got to be some way to get rid of the fairy godmother without sending her to hell, right?"

"No. The girl will have to reject the godmother." Constantine protested.

"Who's going to give up that kind of power, especially in her situation?" Sara asked.

"We just have to give her what she wants." Zari said, "If we save her mom then she won't need her godmother."

"Z, we can't. I checked the historical record. Jane Hawthorne was executed as a witch. That was canon before the fairy godmother affected the timeline. We can't change that." Sara argued.

"So, we're just going to let them do it?" Zari asked, "Sara, this is exactly like where I'm from. The tribalism, scapegoating, persecuting someone just because they're different, while other people just stand by and do nothing."

"I don't want it to go down like this either, Z. I'm sorry, but we don't have a choice." Sara sighed.

"Myra?" Zari stared at her.

"Z. Normally I'd be with you but this could have disastrous repercussions." Myra sighed, "I don't want to condemn an innocent person to death but I also don't want to doom us all."

"I promised her that I would help her." Zari pleaded.

"Well, you made a promise that we can't keep." Sara said, "Look the priority here is separating Prudence from her godmother. That's how we're going to save more lives."

"So, in the meantime, we just let her think we're saving her mom?" Zari asked.

Myra and Sara sighed in answer.

"That's great." Zari grumbled and stormed off.

"Z!" Myra called after her.

"Let her go." Sara told her, "We have to figure out how to solve this."

Myra was sitting in the kitchen, her feet propped up on a chair while she drank a coffee and poured over a book. Mick and Ray were also in the kitchen eating when Sara walked in.

"Have any of you seen Zari?" Sara asked.

"Nope." Myra shook her head.

"With the witch?" Mick asked, eating a sandwich.

"Prudence isn't a witch. Not that witches are bad." Ray shrugged.

"Prudence is alone. I just checked." Sara sighed, "Gideon!"

"Miss Tomaz gave me explicit instructions not to tell you that she was leaving the ship." Gideon said.

"That can't be good." Ray sighed.

"Great." Myra looked up from the book, "How much do you want to bet that she went to free Jane?"

"Stay with the kid. Don't piss her off." Sara instructed them.

Myra shrugged in response and went back to her coffee.

"Myra. You're coming with me." Sara told her.

Myra groaned, "And who's going to stop them from doing anything stupid?"

"Right now, I need backup, Myr. Come on." Sara said, and left the room.

Myra set down her stuff and quickly followed her.

Once they'd changed and arrived back in Salem, there was no sign of anyone.

"This is suspicious." Myra mumbled to Sara as they looked around.

"We need to hurry." Sara said, holding a crossbow in her hand.

This time around, Sara had been more than willing to let Myra bring along her sword, and Myra was glad. Having it by her side brought her a lot more comfort than anyone realized.

Myra hurried after Sara and the two quickly came upon most of the villagers gathered around a pyre where Zari and Jane were tied up. Jane was unconscious but Zari wasn't and was struggling against the rope.

"Zari. Oh no." Myra gasped, "What do we do?"

When a man lifted a stick with fire burning on one end, Sara gripped her crossbow and quickly fired on him before stepping forward so she could be seen, "Let the women go."

"Light the pyre." The man growled, "Let God's work be done."

"Do it and he's dead." Sara pointed her crossbow at him.

Myra stayed out of sight for the meantime, letting Sara take the lead.

"My soul will live with God for all time." The man promised.

Sara glanced sideways and Myra got her message, unsheathing her sword and moving forward.

"Screw it." Sara grumbled and hit the man over the head with her crossbow before kicking another one to the ground.

Myra swung her sword at a man who approached her, knocking him out cold. She twirled it in her hand as if to dare anyone to come near her. Several more men, clearly not getting the message, ran at her and she twirled around in a blur, knocking out each man either with her blade or her legs. She looked over to Sara who was also busy fighting. It seemed as if every man in the village was trying to take the two women on, just so they could burn the other women at the pyre.

"Seriously?" Myra grumbled, knocking another man out, "Don't you have anything better to do?"

Three men suddenly moved forward and grabbed Myra's arms yanking them behind her so she couldn't move. Her sword fell to the ground and someone else quickly snatched it up. Myra struggled furiously, whipping her head around to look for Sara but Sara was in a similar predicament.

A man quickly moved forward, grabbing a torch and lighting the pyre.

"No!" Zari, Sara and Myra all screamed at once but no one cared.

Until Prudence walked in with her fairy godmother and yelled, "Stop!"

The next thing Myra knew, the man who had been trying to murder Zari and Jane was on the pyre while Zari, Jane and Prudence was on the ground. Constantine was moving forward past all of the confused people towards the fairy godmother who was now without her wand.

"What is going on?" Myra asked, pushing the men around her to the side and coming up to Zari.

Constantine muttered an incantation which forced some sort of magical rope around the fairy godmother, "And that is for taking my mouth, you silly old bat."

Constantine looked over at Myra and Myra nodded appreciatively and winked at him, "Okay, maybe you don't deserve to burn."

"I knew you'd warm up to me, love" Constantine grinned at her.

"I said maybe, Constantine. Don't count your chickens before they hatch." Myra smirked and turned to Sara and Zari, "Let's go, I've had more than enough of Salem to last a lifetime."
