Stuffed to the max with mac and cheese pizza the Darling sisters all lie awake in their beds that night. Kate is nestled under her covers with flashlight to read a scary story, Sophie colors pictures of unicorns, while Ava stares up at the full moon that hangs outside her window. She wishes the wind would come and tell her that it's okay. It saved her and Derek and she would like more than anything for it to come so she could give her thanks. She's worried about what's going to happen to the woods, they are severely damaged and she hopes that doesn't give the construction workers more reason to knock it down.

"Why'd you do it?" Kate asks, taking the blankets off of her.

Ava isn't really paying attention, she's too busy wishing for the magic.

"Earth to Ava," Kate says, trying again.

Ava sits up and stares over at the dark outline of Kate's body.

"I had to warn the wind. They can't kill the woods, it's magical in there."

"Ava, you're being ridiculous. Magic doesn't exist."

"Sohpie, tell her she's wrong. You believe in magic don't you?"

Sophie is quiet.

"Soph?" Ava's tiny voice breaks.

"See? No one believes that those woods are magic. You scared Aunt Chris," Kate yells louder, her voice shakes with anger.

"You scared us too," Sophie tells her sister.

"And mom ... the most," Kate adds.

"I didn't mean to scare people," she says, pulling the covers up to her chin as she settles back down into bed.

"Well you did, and Derek could have gotten badly hurt!"

"I know," Ava says, pulling the blankets to her mouth now.

Her eyes water with sadness, and her bottom lip quivers. If only they understood why she ran away. Deep down in her belly she knows what she did was wrong. She's sorry she hurt Derek, sorry she frightened her family, but she's not sorry that she went to warn the magic.

"You never think about the consequences..."

"Be quiet!"

Ava covers her ears as large drops of tears fall down her cheeks. Her sister quiets as she cries herself to the point of exhaustion. Her eyes close and within minutes she's asleep, hoping to dream of a magical adventure.
