The clouds grow near

The morning was nothing unusual. From the moment that I woke up there was the cold draft that traveled across the house. It was no surprise as the window from the kitchen was jammed open, letting the wind pass without any resistance. There wasn't anything new in the routine that I have done each morning after I wake up from yet another dreamless night of sleep. It's always the same, first I get up from the couch that I slept in, next there is the refreshing feeling of the cold floor underneath my feet, and then a short journey to the small bathroom. Getting ready for the surprises of the day is almost like being a question on an exam you didn't study, you look at what will happen and you prepare to guess on an answer knowing it can be right or wrong.  It was like that everyday as I dress with the familiar colors of red being my shirt and black being my pants of course I need all the strength I can get today.

As I finish getting dressed I look towards the area I slept, it was a organized mess of blankets something I can relate to. I walked over to the couch and started folding the pieces of cloth now cold as the warmth they had was consumed by the surrounding cold. After putting all of them in a small container I take a set on the same couch now completely bare. For a second I saw that the outside was cloudy almost if the sky wanted to cry for what will happen today..."please do" was all that I said hopefully there was such a thing as miracles. I look to the left side of the room, there was a drawer that had multiple frames with photographs most of which had a group of people with different outfits but all nevertheless formal.

"If only all of you were here to see such a day." I said feeling droplets of water forming on my face.

With that I laid down on the same couch, but all you can hear is the soft sobbing of someone and then a few minutes later silences and darkness. It was comforting to know that the day is short and the clouds are at the gates.

I was awaken from the soft sound of piano notes. I got up again with my eyes having difficulty trying to locate the source of the sound in the darkness. It was obvious were it was coming from, as there was a dim light in the same drawer with the picture frames. I stood up and turned of the music that was cheerful.

"What time is it." I said looking again at the phone.

"Damn it's 10 I guess I can go for a drink anyways."

I put the phone on my pocket, grabbed my wallet, the car keys, and a black trench coat with the cuffs and shoulders having red stripes. I opened the door and saw how the night sky was covered by a thick blanket of clouds which made everything darker. I looked back at the photos one last time then I closed the door behind me, I walked towards the dark blue Mustang in the street. I opened the door and turned on the engine, but as the engine finished making it's drumming there were drops of water falling from the sky. A smile formed on my face and I drove off to my destination.

I stopped the car in the front of  a red bricked building among the other similar buildings that stretched as far as I can see. It was raining much more intensely than the time I left my house. I cut off the engine and got out the vehicle closing and locking the door as I entered the building with the red sign that said "BAR". Once inside I took a sit in the far end of the bar where the bartender hands out the drinks.

"What can I get you today Adam."

"Hi Dale, just give me the regular." Dale Gilmore a man that has known me the longest and is still alive.

"One scotch whiskey coming up."

He quickly grabs a bottle of Carlton blended scotch whiskey from the shelf full of  varies types of alcoholic drinks with equally as many brand names. He grabs an old fashioned glass and he poured the whiskey accompanied with three ice cubes.

"Orders up Adam."

"Thanks for this I might be here all night again Dale."

Dale just nodded his head and left to serve other customers. I started to take my drink and suddenly there was the door opening followed by the steps of someone. He walked toward the left chair in the side of where I was sitting in. He was wearing a black jacket and it had the letter 'N' 'W' 'G' something else that he had was two rings in his left hand. He ordered the same as I did and was quietly drinking his beverage quickly. I finish mine just as fast as he did waiting for the warm sensation in my throat to be triggered.

" He Dale give me another drink and serve one for my friend here." I pointed toward the guy that was sitting next to me.

He looked at me with an expression of bewilderment, then his lips curled to a gleeful smile.

"Thanks for the drink." He said now fully looking towards me.

"No problem I'm here often so today it was you how was chosen.  What is your name anyway. "

"The names Spencer.  And what's your's friend."

I hesitated with the answer for that question. It was difficult for me to think such memories especially after it happened long ago. I tilted my head down and I guess he saw my discomfort as he said to not worry about it. I raised my head and slightly opened my mouth.

"My names Adam, a pleasure to meet you Spencer."

He smiled again and our drinks came back to us. We drank four glasses of scotch as we talked about how the world was a complete waste of time and by the fifth I started to feel much more confident.

"So what brings you here Spencer. To the bar"

"Well....."

Author's note: well this is the first of hopefully many short stories. Please fully criticize this as it is a practice for an even greater project I am working on. There will be another three separate yet similar stories. If anyone reads this and wants to read the other half of this story just ask and I will work on. I will like to take this time to give Gustave Sautee a special thanks. Again thank you for reading this sad excuse of a story, but we all have to start somewhere.
