Chapter 6

Chapter 6

The sun rose to meet her just as she got out of bed moving to take a cold morning shower. Her image in the mirror looked better today as her eyes looked more lively and her face seemed brighter or it could be that the sun's rays flooding through the window of the bathroom casting a sort of golden light in the bathroom.

Finally done with her morning shower and staring at her image in the mirror, she moved into the bedroom. Sitting down on the bed she began running the towel through her wet hair gently and almost gingerly doing her best with her only working hand making sure she didn't touch the still sore part of her head.

Her mind strayed as she tried to search her mind for anything, any memory at all but all she did was draw up a blank. The further she probed her mind the more it left her a pounding headache.

"I'm not sure that's how we dry hair" Rhoda's voice came from the door making her jump.

"Sorry, you seemed lost in thought to hear me knocking" Rhoda said from her place peeking behind the door.

"It's okay" she said to assure her.

"So can I come in now?"

"Of course"

Rhoda walked towards her,"Mind if I help you?"

She looked at Rhoda not understanding her.

"You know with your hair?"

"Oh okay" she handed the towel over to her.

Rhoda was done in no time pulling her hair into a loose ponytail.

"Come on downstairs, we've got breakfast then we head to church"

She followed Rhoda down where Daniel and the little girl were waiting at the table. They seemed to be the first people at the table each time there was food.

Mrs Asamoah was missing from the table she noticed. Rhoda moved to sit right opposite Daniel leaving her standing at the bottom of the stairs.

She nearly fell over when a little figure hugged her legs. She looked down to see the little girl looking up at her with a smile while holding her legs.

"Doreen! That was not right. You could have knocked her over. Go on, apologize to the lady" Rhoda reprimanded her.

Doreen's smile fell, "I'm sorry Miss, I didn't want you to fall"

She couldn't help it when a smile grew on her face,"It's okay"

The little girl perked at her and beamed with a smile. Suddenly she grabbed her hand and started dragging her towards the table, before halting.

"I want you to sit by me....please?" Doreen whispered.

She shrugged,"Sure"

Finally she sat down at the table with Doreen in between her and Rhoda as they waited for Mrs. Asamoah to bring out the food.

********************************

Daniel stared out the window as they waited for the food. He didn't really like the fact that she was sitting at the table and to top it off Doreen actually wanted to sit with her when she had always sat with him.

That really ticked him off. Jealousy reared its head.

"Day dreaming on a Sunday morning?" His moms voice drew him out of his reverie.

"You would think he's going to do the preaching today" Rhoda teased.

"Not funny" he said

Rhoda shrugged,"I think it is"

"Well I think three people including myself are hungry. So we will start, let's bow our head in prayer family" Mrs. Asamoah intervened.

"Lord we are grateful for a wonderful morning and for the gift of life. Thank you for the gift of a tasty...

"And yummy!" Doreen piped in.

"Yes and a gift of yummy dish you've given us. In Jesus's name we pray. Amen"

"Amen" they chorused around the table before clanging of cutlery filled the room.
Daniel couldn't help digging into the food. His mom could cook. And it wasn't a form of exaggeration.

Silence in the room was suddenly cut through when Doreen asked through a mouthful of scrambled eggs, "Where do you come from?"

"Um...I don't remember Doreen" she said quietly.

Daniel raised his head to look at her.

"How can you not remember?" his niece continued.

Rhoda stepped in, "Dor, you shouldn't talk while eating"

To counter that, Doreen quickly finished her meal and leaned back in the chair to stare at the lady beside her. Daniel smiled at Doreen's antics, she was just too much like him.

Rhoda shook her head muttering something about giving up.

"Do you remember your name?"
The answer again was in the negative.

"So how will you remember?" Doreen continued her investigation.

"I don't know. But I'm sure I will soon" She said causing Daniel to look at her.

She sounded so sure of herself. Well he couldn't wait for that day when he will be free of her. He couldn't speak for the family though.

"That's our prayer too dear" Mrs. Asamoah said causing Daniel to roll his eyes as he continued to eat.

Everyone went back to eating as silence filled the room once again. Only to be broken by Doreen. Again.

"Are you a catwalker?"

Laughter broke out at the table.
She looked confused, "What is a catwalker?"

"She means a model, the ones who do the catwalk on runways" Rhoda answered amidst laughter.

"I think she doesn't know what that is either" Daniel answered on seeing her face still looking confused.

"Well I believe that that's enough questioning Doreen. She needs to eat too" His mom said ending what might have been a barrage of questions from Doreen.

"Okay Grandma"

When the meal was done, before Daniel could protest, Rhoda gave him a look which he knew all too well...he was taking care of the dishes.

Hmm...why did I move out again? Oh yeah so I wouldn't have to deal with my annoying sister.

"Come on ladies, we don't want to be late for church" Rhoda chirped as all three ladies plus the guest lady moved upstairs.

Rhoda shot him a smile to which he responded with a glare as he carried the dishes away.

He loved his sister that he couldn't deny.

In fifteen minutes, Daniel was already pacing the living room dressed in a long sleeved pale blue shirt tucked into a black trouser as he waited for them to finish dressing up. He had made use of the bathroom downstairs in getting ready.

Footsteps on the stairs showed his mother and Doreen heading downstairs.

He moved to open the door, as they walked out and headed for the car. Doreen climbed into the back with his mom sitting beside her, he moved to strap in Doreen,  who was in her favourite dress, a pink dress with white flowers.

He closed her door and checked his wrist watch.

"Come on Daniel, stop checking the time you make it seem like we are late" his mom said.

He leaned against the door of the driver's side folding his arms across his chest as he waited, "Women. I got dressed in less than ten minutes but they decide to use thirty whole minutes to get....."

His words failed when he heard the closing of the door and saw her standing in the balcony. Dressed in a purple dress with flats to match. With her arm in a black sling.

But it wasn't the dress that made his words fail. Nor the flats. It was her smile, she was smiling at something Rhoda was saying.
He didn't think he'd seen a smile like that before as he stood staring his mouth agape. Nor did he understand why he was captivated by it.

"Hello? Can we go now? And can you close your mouth?" Rhoda snapped her fingers in front of him before moving to sit down in the front seat.

He closed his mouth and climbed in noticing she sat right behind him in the backseat.

Little did he know, there was more fascinating things about her than her smile and he was in for an amazing journey. One he had just unknowingly gotten aboard.
