Chapter 16

Footsteps and whispers sounded outside her door, she had slept way into the morning, she had honestly not slept early, being to busy crying to know what time it was before she slept. A look at her table clock said it was nine twenty in the morning. She stood up from her bed and brushed her cream coloured drapes aside getting access to the view of the huge swimming pool located at the side of the house, a little further from the pool was the garage which was basically a huge canopy that housed the cars, a gardener was trimming some overgrown hedges in the garden that was by the pool.

Turning around she looked around the room, decorated with the theme colours of lavender and cream. Her walls were painted lavender with the furniture and any other equipment it housed being cream. She found her way into her bathroom which was opposite her bed. Once she was done with her morning routine, she pulled on her training clothes before finally pulling her unruly hair into a loose ponytail. Grabbing her training bag, she walked out the door, hearing the footsteps cease even before she got to turn the handle.

The corridors of the house was empty , as she walked into the hall and picked up one of the two car keys that were available in the bowl that held it. It was the keys of a Kia Sorento, she walked to the garage seeing no one, she didn't think much of the absence of the people on the compound, she was just thinking on getting to the gym. She felt like letting off some pent up frustration, she wanted a place to think. So the gym it was. She opened the door, got into the car and drove out before driving through the tall metal gates and then getting down to close it once again. She got into her car and drove again in the direction of the gym.

The vicinity had hardly changed since she left. And lost her memory too. Everything was still the same, as far as she could remember. She wondered what the Asamoah's were doing now, were they thinking of her actions in leaving abruptly without any warning, or had they already forgotten her and moved on with their lives. She chided herself mentally that their lives did not depend on her being in their lives, if she were to find herself in their shoes, she was sure she would definitely be hurt at the way she left. But now she realized there was no use crying over spilt mill, her actions were irreversible now. Even though she would love to take all she did back, to at least have thanked Mrs. Asamoah for everything they'd done for her and not seem like the ungrateful human being she had made herself to be in their eyes.

Now was not the time to think of things like this, she told herself when she felt tears burn her eyes at the thoughts running through her head. Composing herself, she prevented her mind from going on all the possibilities of the assumptions the Asamoah's had probably drawn about her. It was much easier that way.

Music sounded nearby, it sounded like a choir singing. As she drove the sound got nearer. She tried to know why a choir would be singing before realizing the day was a Sunday, a minute later, she drove into the parking lot of the church responsible for the sound of music. A huge building of a church it was, made of red brick stones, it sometimes looked like an ancient cathedral to her, the only thing that refuted the fact was when you entered the church and found them singing contemporary gospel. That was when people realized, okay it is a modern era temple.

The back row was empty, so she quietly and quickly slipped in to avoid the ushers who might have ushered her in front, she noticed her aunt and uncle in the second pew, Fred sat beside them, they created the picture of a family, it wasn't really surprising, they considered him a part of the family already. The message that was being talked about was on Holiness and righteousness.

She remained silent as the teachers voice echoed in the temple's silent atmosphere, everyone sat with rapt attention, but she could see one man dozing three rows from where she sat.

Righteousness, the teacher explained, was a gift we gained after being saved. To give it a simple meaning, immediately we ask God to cleanse us of our sins as we confess that we are sinners, we are clseansed and then put into a right standing with God, that is righteousness. Righteousness is not worked for, to be gained as a product of one's works, it was a gift we gained from salvation, as a package deal that it came with. But for holiness we were to strive for it. A holy life is not gained through gift we work for, just as we have a choice on who we have to let into our lives and how we want to live our lives, so it applies to living a holy life, you choose to do so.

Service soon ended and before she could slip out of the church unnoticed, she caught the stares of the church members. Most came to say hello, and exchange pleasantries. Her family caught sight of her and moved towards her. She saw they were surrounded by their close friends, the Mills family was popular around here. Her uncle was the first to reach her.
"You came, I thought you were still asleep" he threw his hands around her shoulder pulling her into his side.

He was a tall man, and she remembered when she would get tired of looking up at him, tilting her head far back she would feel pains in her neck, and so would ask him to carry her. He would carry her and place her on his shoulders and she would say she was taller than him now. Even now, although she was gifted with average height, it was still not up to his as he she was tucked under his arm.

She shrugged against him, "I thought it was Saturday, and actually was headed for the gym"
He laughed, "Ah so that explains the gym clothes. I thought you were trying out a new type of clothes for church"

"I think it looks good on her, she slays every thing she puts on. I might try it too" Fred said smiling at her.

Her aunt rolled her eyes, "Of course you think so. Everything she does is beautiful to you. if it weren't so you would not have asked her to marry you"

Rain cleared her throat, "So can we get going?" she asked effectively changing the subject.

Already headed for her car, she didn't pause to find out whether they were following her or not. She knew she might have been acting impulsively but in that moment she just needed a break and it seemed her aunt was trying to remind her she was engaged to Fred. She got the hint she was sending, she wanted things to speed up.

She paused briefly to give out pleasantries to the few people she met on the way into the parking lot.

To say she was surprised would be a big lie as she wasn't. Not even a little bit, when Fred appeared next to her car, his breath a little heavy as though he had ran to catch up with her. "I'm getting a ride from you" he said climbing into the passenger seat beside her.

"Oh and let me guess my aunt told you to follow me" she said staring out of the windshield at the people trickling out of the church slowly.

"Okay, Rain. Now you need to tell me what I have done wrong. What is the matter with you? And why are you making it seem like I'm a mere friend. I'm you fiancé for crying out loud. I might understand if it's because you just had your memory back or that you just came back home after a long time and that you feel a little out of it. But you should not go about treating me like I'm an old friend you are just meeting again after a long time. You know I am not"

Rain listened to him silently, "Are you done?"

"What have I done to make you treat me like this?" his voice was rising now.

She turned to face him, "Why don't you tell me?" his mouth opened and closed as he stared back no words coming out of his mouth. If she were to be honest, he looked trapped. And that was part of her aim. He turned away from her steely gaze and looked at the dashboard keeping his mouth shut. Though he did not give her what she expected of him, she felt it was enough.

Needless to say the drive was a quiet one. Her aunt and uncle had arrived way before they did. She got out of the car and quickly excused herself to her room without waiting for anyone.

***********************************

His mom forced him to come home after church. He had been unable to go back to the day before and so had stayed. Right now he just stared at his mom who stood in front of him, arms folded, he sat in the couch, wanting to be anywhere but there.

"Danny, you did not hear a single word of what I just said" she stated moving to sit beside him. She sighed, "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine mom. Can I go now? I've got a busy day tomorrow"

Mrs. Asamoah opened her mouth to speak but Daniel raised a hand, "Mom please, lets not go there, I don't want to talk about her. She's with her family now"

"But how do you know that she knows that guy?"

"He's her fiancé mom. She told me herself and he showed me proof of it. I told you she remembered, and so she has to go where she belongs. Can we leave it at that?" he blurted. He had kept it simple when he was explaining Rain's disappearance that she had simply remembered and had left with the guy.

His answer kept her quiet then, "Oh"

"Mom please, she must have left hurriedly because she probably wanted to see her family again. That might be why she couldn't say goodbye properly. Don't read too much into it" he told her quickly not wanting to see her worried.

She laughed, "I'm not reading too much into it. It's just you I'm worried about right now, and her too, I'll admit."

"Well don't be, I'm fine. And I'll be on my way right now" he stood up after tapping her hand gently. "I'll be fine mom"

A serious look came on her face, "I don't doubt it. Just take it easy. One step at a time, okay?"

He nodded giving her a tight smile before walking out the door. He got into his car and drove straight for his apartment.

Choosing not to put on the radio or some music, he drove silently, just him, his thoughts, the loud hum of his engine and the occasional whiz of a car driving past him or overtaking him on the slightly narrow stretch of road leading him out of the town he grew up in.

As he approached the bend in the road, precisely where he had met Fred, he laughed out. Loudly, like a mad man. He laughed because he just saw how he made the man's day better, he found his somehow estranged fiancée.

Funny enough, he had encountered them both almost the same way and he had to get his heart fully involved before Fred showed up. He remembered Fred hugging and telling him, that he was right when he said his day would go right.

Oh the man's day had gone really well, and he had handed it to him. Right now, he didn't need to dwell on it, he told himself. It was good while it lasted, and that was that, he had to let it go. But meanwhile, he was happy for one thing, he had not let his feelings progressed very far. He couldn't imagine, if he and Sophi-Rain had gotten committed before Fred showed up. He just couldn't imagine what he would have done then.
So even though it was a bitter pill, he was going to take his advice to Fred.

Everything happens for a reason. It's just not seen yet.
