Chapter 15

Fred stalked towards Sophia  which she copied moving backwards. Daniel moved to stand in between them preventing Fred from coming close to her. Fred tried to go around him to get to her but he stretched out a hand stopping him.

"Please get out of the way" Fred said his eyes glued on Sophia.

"Not until you tell me why you are acting this way. You are scaring her."

Fred laughed humour absent, "Look at her. Does she look scared to you?" his hand gestured towards Sophia. Daniel turned his head and glanced at her. She didn't look scared, her face was devoid of all emotions as she stared blankly at Fred.
"Please, you have to talk to me. You've been gone for almost five months leaving me with nothing. Not even a single message, not a call to tell me where you were. Why would you do that? Do you know how your family was worried about you?"

Daniel held up a hand, "What are you talking about? Where do you know Sophia from?"

Confusion marked Fred's face, "Her name is Rain not Sophia. What are you talking about?" he moved around Daniel and stood right in front of Sophia, "Rain say something, don't just stand there. You had us all thinking you were in Nigeria yet you were right here. This day is now getting better. You were right Dan, my day can get better, the negative side is gone now" he said placing his hands on either side of Sophia's face and whispered to her, "You have no idea how much I missed you" before placing a kiss on her forehead.

For a couple of minutes, Daniel stared at Fred, "What did you call her again?"

Fred removed his hands and turned to look at him, "Rain. And tell me how did you meet her?"

"An accident happened and she lost her memory. She's been living with us ever since. How do you know her? Do you have any proof to back your claim?" Daniel said coolly but was so confused on the inside.

"How do I know her? She's my fiancée and yes I do have proof" Fred said, taking out his phone his fingers moving furiously across the screen of his phone.

That was an emotional blow to Daniel and it hurt. A lot. But he tried convincing himself maybe Fred was confused and didn't know what he was saying. Sophia or Rain as he'd called her, stared at Fred quietly not talking.

He turned to her hoping to get an answer, "Sophie? Do you remember anything? Do you know this man?"

Sophia turned her head to glance at him for the first time since Fred had called her Rain. She quickly lowered her eyes. But with that look in her eyes, his hopes fell way before she answered. "Not Sophia Daniel, my name is Rain"

She remembered. This was not how he had wanted her to remember when he had wanted her to leave the house at first. Not like this. Not when his heart was involved. Not when he had begun to gain a little hope. But he noticed she didn't answer one of his questions. No one told him love would cause that much hurt. Sure he heard that phrase before but now that he was experiencing it personally, he could relate to the term well.
"Do you know him?" he forced himself to ask, a silent plea in his voice for her to say no, to save his heart some pain.
Sophia or Rain as it was now nodded, "I do. He's my fiancé"

Fred then showed him his phone, on its screen was a picture of both of them with her gushing over what was clearly an engagement ring.

"He's your fiancé" the words came out of their own accord.
She looked at him, all composed, "We are engaged Daniel" she said as though he was a child who needed an explanation.

Fred took his hand pulling him into a side hug, "I really believe you are an angel in human form now. Thanks a lot man. Wait, no, thank you is not enough but you still deserve it. Thanks again" he released him moving to Sophia or Rain. "I have to call your family to let them know" he leaned in but Sophia turned slightly so he ended up kissing her cheek, "I love you Rain. So much. And I'm glad to have you back" he said before pressing something on his phone and placing it on his ear. After some seconds he moved towards his car still talking into the phone excitedly.

Daniel took a step back as though pushed by an invisible hand. He heard Sophia's whispered sorry as he entered the house slamming the door behind him.

***********************

Rain looked at the door as it slammed. Daniel left. He was hurt. That much was known to her. And it was her fault. It was all her fault. She had caused him pain, right after he had poured his heart out to her, she just had to crush it. Tears burned her eyes as her heart felt as though there were a thousand pins pricking it from all angles; she didn't mean to hurt him.

"I just called them, your aunt is on her way from Accra, she will meet you home" Fred was saying walking back to where she stood. She quickly blinked to clear the tears whilst nodding.

"Where's Daniel? I have to talk to him. I would like to meet the family that you've been living with all these months"

Rain shook her head, "No"

Fred looked at her, "What does that mean? At least let me just tell them a thank you"

Her decision was made, "Fred, I said no. Please take me home" she climbed into his car waiting for him to enter. He followed shortly after, "Are you sure about this? I know you must be completely overwhelmed right now. At least think of how they would feel knowing you left just like that"

He paused for a while, "Do you need to go to the hospital? He did say you lost your memory"

"I'm fine "

She looked out the window as he started the car. All she was doing was in their interest. In doing this she was thinking of them. She was thinking of him.  She was doing this for him. He didn't deserve another jab to his already shattered hope. He needed to be spared that. She could only hope he would understand that, and that it was all for him. Tears pooled in her eyes making the houses they drove by a blurry shape of colours. She closed her eyes leaning against the window but quickly opened her eyes when Fred took her hand in his.

Turning her head in his direction, she found him looking at her with a smile. A small smile crept on her face, how she missed that smile and the warmth that accompanied it, right now she wasn't feeling it.

"There's the smile I was looking for, I knew it would show up one way or another" Fred joked.

She pulled her hand from his and placed it on her lap when his phone pinged. "Oh that's your aunt and uncle. They want updates" he laughed. "Guess I'm not the only one filled with excitement"

Her dear aunt and uncle, they were her guardians since her parents were out of the country. A smile grew on her face at the thought of seeing them again, they were probably going to keep her under lock and key now. Back on the night she met Daniel by way of the accident, they had not wanted her to go on the business trip that she was to embark on but later agreed due to her insistence that she could take care of herself at her age. She had been on her way to catch a flight to Nigeria but had forgotten an important file so had driven back. That was the best time she could ever call a bad timing. Because she had walked in on the two people she had trusted and could never believe would betray her trust, though she left before they saw her, she had a feeling they wouldn't care either way if she knew. After all they easily paraded in front of her with their disguises.

It all felt like a game. But now she had the upper hand, she had the knowledge so she wouldn't be surprised before anyone could spring it on her.  But for now she just wanted to get home. Home. Now that was a confusing thought for her, she had the Asamoah's house in mind as a home. That is if they would still have her, after the way she had just left. She knew that even with the fact that she remembered there was no excuse that would suffice for an apology to them. Closing her eyes, she could only hope they would forgive her.

Sometime later she felt herself floating and that woke her up to see she was in Fred's arms, and he was walking towards a white washed building which had the word mansion befitting as a description. For it was a huge building. She remembered when she was young she would tell her friends she lived in a castle. Of course every little girls dream was to be a princess living in a big castle, for her it was reality.

"Fred please put me down"

"Oh no. I'm not having that. I'm taking you to your room" He said breathing out his words literally. He was now climbing the stairs that led to the huge door at the entrance of the house.

She sighed not in the mood for his antics, "Just put me down" she said in a clipped tone, he immediately set her on her feet. "Thank you. I can wa..."

A shriek cut her off when her aunt run out of the house pulling her into a hug. "Oh my dear girl"

"Hi Aunt" she said causing her to pull away from the embrace and stare at her a disapproving look taking the place of happiness on her face, "Don't you Hi Aunt me. You disappear for months and reappear with just a 'Hi Aunt'? What got into your head to take off like that with no way of communicating with you. I was thinking you were in Nigeria the whole time. I just heard you were rather in Ghana."

She smiled looking at her, "I missed you Aunt"

"Aww, I missed you too dear" she said her mood switched back to that of happiness.

Her uncle appeared behind his wife, "What are you wearing?" and that earned him a smack on his shoulder, "Your niece just got back and her clothes are what you care about?"

Rain understood him though, even though she discreetly looked down at the brown and white striped dress she was wearing to see what was wrong with it, he was  never one to show his emotions easily. She smiled at him, earning a smile back and she could see the concern he had for her, "You know what, come here" he held his arms open for a hug which she gladly gave. "Don't you ever do that again you hear? But I thank God you are safe and back with us." he whispered.
She laughed pulling from him, "Got it." She turned to her aunt, "I'm sorry but I would love to head for my room now"

"Absolutely, you need to rest, Fred take her" her aunt said with the hint of a subtle command directed to Fred, who placed a hand on her back guiding her to her room. She walked faster to get rid of his hand touching her, he got the hint and allowed her some space. When she got to her room she thanked Fred and was about closing the door when Fred placed a hand on it.
"Please I just want to be alone right now. I hope you can understand me"

Fred seemed to think about it but finally nodded, "I'll be here when you wake up"

Her reply was closing the door, not giving a care to the disappointed look on Fred's face.  With shaky steps she fell on her bed and did the one thing she had wanted to do since she had her memories gushing back into her head like a flood. She let it all out. She cried.
