"Words in double quotes." - Talking
'Words in single quotes.' - Thoughts
Timeline - After Ragini reaches Abhimanyu's home and questions him if he's really not Laksh.
Heart Doesn't Lie
"How's that possible?" Ragini shouted in a broken voice.
Her husband was standing right before her eyes. Yet, he was refusing to admit he was Laksh.
The so called Abhimanyu Khanna sighed. "I'm just a lookalike. I'm sorry for your loss Miss, but I'm not..." he coughed. "Your husband."
"Yes." Mansi pushed Mishka forward. "Ask her. She wouldn't lie."
Ragini looked at the innocent child.
Mishka nodded. "This is my father. Why are you saying he is your husband, Miss?"
Hearing her words, Ragini's last ray of hope broke down. After all, why would a child lie?
"I..." Ragini grit her teeth to stop herself from breaking down. Without a word, she turned around and left.
"Maa, who was that lady?"
"No-one Mishka. Let's go have lunch, shall we?!"
"You both go ahead. I have some work." saying so, he left.
However, he, Laksh Maheshwari, was going after Ragini. He knew he hurt her by lying. But he never could bear seeing Ragini in tears.
The way she left the place, made him uncomfortable. After all, she was his soul. How could he eat or rest without knowing if she was okay?
As he followed her, he saw her enter the park and sit down in a secluded corner by herself.
Even from a distance, Laksh knew she crying silently. The way she had her fist over her mouth to cover her sobs broke his heart. All he wanted to do was keep her in his embrace. However, he was trapped.
Ragini squeezed her eyes shut as she recalled memories of Laksh. 'Laksh? Where did you go? Did you really leave me forever? Come back...please...PLEASE!'
Ragini's eyes opened feeling a hand on her shoulder. Her movements froze out of shock.
There sat Laksh beside her with a concerned look.
Ragini smiled despite her tears and leapt forward to hug him.
However, he stopped her.
"I'm sorry, but I'm not him."
These words were like ice cold water being dropped on her. "Right...I'm sorry. It's ju-"
"It's okay."
"But what are you doing here. You don't even know me!" Ragini enquired. 'Tell me you're lying. Tell me you're actually Laksh.'
"You looked really sad. And it was my fault basically for looking like him and bringing back painful memories. So I came to make sure you were okay." Laksh lied swiftly.
If she wasn't so distressed, she would have noted how he avoided eye contact while explaining.
They sat there for some time, with him trying to distract Ragini from her sorrows. However, he knew the amount of hurt he was making her go through can never be forgotten or forgiven.
Ragini stood up suddenly. She blinked as she felt the world blur just for a moment. "Thank you for coming to check on me. I'll be leaving now." she smiled sadly. 'The more you are near me, the more it dawns on me that my Laksh is gone. Your face tortures my heart.'
He nodded. "I'm sorry for being rude, but please don't come to our house again."
Ragini laughed bitterly. "Could you be more cruel than indirectly tell me that my husband's gone?!"
He shrugged nonchalantly, although his mouth felt like sandpaper uttering the words. "The truth is the truth." without speaking further, he turned around to leave. 'If you keep coming, then you'll be hurt over and over.'
Laksh knew what he was doing meant leaving Ragini. And it killed him from the inside. But he had to take responsibility for the accident. He had to be there for Mishka.
Yet, as he walked away, he couldn't help but wish for Ragini. 'Call my name Ragini. Just this once...'
However, instead he heard a thud. His breath hitched in fear. Abruptly he turned around to see one of the sights which would forever haunt his dreams.
"RAGINI!"
Laksh ran towards where she had fallen and put her head in his lap. "Ragini?! Wake up! Wake up!" getting no response, he picked her up bridal style and carried her to his car.
Later, at the hospital...
Ragini groaned as she came into her senses.
"I see you're awake. You fainted." the doctor smiled. "Good thing he brought you here."
Laksh was glaring at her. "You're a grown up girl!? Why aren't you taking care of yourself!?"
"Actually, it's you who are to blame Mister." the doctor chided. "Her weight is below the ideal, her skin has grown dull. Do you even know she's running a fever?"
"Fever?" both Ragini and Laksh uttered in surprise.
"Yes. You've been running a fever since about a week. I'm surprised you hadn't fainted earlier with how much your temperature is!"
Ragini looked down. "I'm sorry for worrying you doctor. I guess I didn't notice."
"But your husband should have!" the doctor glared at Laksh.
Ragini flinched. "He's not my hu-"
"What else is wrong?" Laksh interrupted.
"Nothing is! I'm sure." Ragini pacified. "I've always been underweight doctor."
"And what about these scars on your hand?"
"Oh, these are from my childhood."
"And what about your skin?"
"The sun tan of course. Oh the heat! I bet it's what making my temperature spike. It must be that instead of the fever."
The doctor deadpanned. "I'm the doctor or you?"
Laksh, who had been silent all along, got up and marched near them. "Doctor listen. She has always maintained a good weight. It's grown low only now. Her smooth skin wasn't this dull before. As for her fever, you are right. She isn't taking care of herself for past six months!"
"I see. That would explain her malnutrition."
"I'm sorry for not being there for her. But I plan to from now on. So please, prescribe everything needed."
"With pleasure." the doctor nodded and left to prepare the diet chart.
Ragini was speechless.
She could feel herself shaking from the tirade of emotions. "This means..."
Laksh fell down on the chair with a tired sigh. "I can't! I can't pretend anymore knowing you're suffering so much because of me!"
Ragini gasped as she realized what he meant. "La...Laksh?"
Laksh nodded with a bitter smile. "I'm sorry for lying. So very sorry Ragini."
"But...but Mishka didn't seem li-"
"That's because she too doesn't know." Laksh sighed and proceeded to explain.
After sometime...
Ragini was too emotionally. Happy tears, angry tears? She didn't know what she should feel.
Laksh traced the scars on her arm. "Was this my fault? Did you do this to yourself?"
"No. I had fainted two months earlier near the stairs and fell." she spoke without any emotions.
Laksh turned her face towards himself. "I'm so sorry. I know I don't deserve forgiveness. But never put yourself in danger because of me, okay?"
However, Ragini remained flat faced.
"Ragini? Say something Ragini. I'm here now."
Instead of a nod or a smile, what he got was a hard slap to his face.
"You cruel monster!" Ragini sneered bitterly. "You let me suffer thinking you were dead?!"
"That was better than knowing I'm living as Abhimanyu. I wanted you to be with someone deserving than me. I'm not good for you. I only cause you pain!" Laksh cried out.
"Do I look good to you? Do my dead eyes look happy?!" she bit back. "Why do you never trust me? When you loved Swara, you thought I would break and so didn't tell me the truth. Look what happened! Later, you didn't trust me when I really changed and married Kavya to spite me. Look what happened! And...and now, you've decided for me again. Do I look like an object to you?!"
"Never Ragini! You're more precious to me than my own life!"
"And that little girl. How could you fill her with lies?! You were not only destroying me, but her innocent heart as well!"
Laksh looked ashamed of himself. "I..I never thought that way. I'm such a fool!"
"Even now you think less of me." she said with a bitter smile. "You think I would scar myself because I miss you? I'm not suicidal! I have two families who would be hurt because of it. I would never do it! But you think I'm too weak! I hate you so much right now Laksh!"
Laksh sobbed realizing his fatal errors. "Tell me what to do? How do I change things? I'll do anything."
Ragini glared. "Anything?"
"Anything!" Laksh cried out, desperate to win her back.
"We're telling Mishka the truth."
Laksh froze. "But she will be hurt."
"Band-aids are best taken out abruptly, even if it stings."
"And what about us?"
"One time is acceptable. But repeatedly?" Ragini pulled back her hands from his hair. "I need time Laksh. I need to know my place in your life. I need to know you would trust me and share your decisions with me. I'm your wife!"
Laksh nodded in determination. "I promise I'll win your heart back. I promise."
