Absolute Surrender
Understanding God's will is an undertaking that many people struggle with for months, years, and even decades of their life. However, often the problem isn't that they don't know what God's will for their life is, but rather they refuse God's will simply because it isn't their will.
The first step to walking in the will of God is absolute surrender to His will. It is too often that people demand God change for them rather than the other way around. How arrogant it is for one to live like this.
Imagine the God of the universe, the Creator of all, the one who on Judgment Day will bring people down to their knees simply with His presence being demanded by a human, a worm as Job describes us compared to God, demanding God change His will because that person doesn't like God's plan for their life.
The first thing that needs to be understood is that sometimes, God's will for your life doesn't always line up with your will.
This is where surrender to God becomes so important. Before one can ever truly see God's will for their lives, they must give up their lives to God. You must allow God to use you in whatever way He desires.
It is a great tragedy that the majority of Christian doctrine today is based on Christian T-shirts and music. Let go and let God along with Jesus take the wheel are two of the most unbiblical statements that have swept the minds of thousands of modern-day Christians. God isn't supposed to be the one who lives your life. Jesus isn't your driver, He is the one who you are to follow. This is in accordance to the free will God has given us.
On the narrow path that every Christian should be on, Jesus is the one to follow, like a guide. You have the choice to leave the path at any moment, but to do so will inevitably result in destruction.
What these phrases do is spread the idea that as long as one is Christian, and lets God be their driver, they will be in the will of God. These phrases though well-meaning and half-true, only allow a misunderstanding of how one is to live their life.
It is too often that a Christian demands God bless his own will rather than be blessed in God's will. God will always bless His will. If God wanted something to happen, and someone submitted to this will of God, why would God ever stop it from happening? If God wants someone to be a preacher, and that person submits to His will, God would by default bless this work. God doesn't close doors that are meant to stay open.
However, we can. We can always close a door God opens, but God will bring us back and open the door again. He will do this for all eternity, but what He can't do is force us to walk through.
It is like the story of Jonah. God opened a door, but Jonah closed it. God brought Jonah back, and after he submitted to God's will, his work was blessed, and the city of Ninevah was saved from destruction.
Living in accordance with the will of God can only be achieved if we first surrender our lives to Christ. This is no easy task. Jesus said we need to daily take up our cross, and follow Him. It is a battle, but one well worth fighting.
What is absolute surrender to God anyway? It is in the best terms, becoming completely helpless and as nothing before the sight of God. When you become nothing, God can come in and become everything. Then can God start His work in you, and what a powerful work it will be.
The only way God can do His will through you is if you let Him. You need to make yourself a tool, not a worker. The servant prayer of every Christian should be that God's will be their will.
It is a battle of wills, and you need to surrender yours. Until one gives everything up, they cannot live in the will of God.
