Chapter 1: House Pet
[I'll be writing this story a little different than my other xReaders by putting the story in a side character's perspective.]
Musa Kendall looked like a house pet.
He wasn't fat, but his chubby cheeks betrayed his age of twenty-two, and no matter how hard he tried to style his hair, it usually came out to be a tangled black mess that made him appear to have just gotten out of bed. He wore the cleanest of clothes, including the usual accessory of an Omega collar, worn by unmated Omegas who wanted to take an extra pre-caution against the Alpha population.
Who, according to them, have commented that his best feature was his amethyst colored eyes.
Musa Kendall acted like a house pet.
With a meek personality, he tended to keep to himself in a small sunny corner of the Whitdenn Daily. He'd shyly smile at anything that didn't seem too threatening, like the Betas who worked at the entrance of the four story building, otherwise he'd keep his eyes downcasted and hope that all of the cut-throat Alpha journalists and reporters wouldn't look his way and think of him as some sort of threat to their territory.
Perhaps that is why everyone at the Whitdenn Daily referred to Musa Kendall as just that.
"Oi, House Pet." A strangled noise came from the ravenette's throat as he scalded his tongue and quickly placed the cup of hot coffee down on the counter and turned his head with wide eyes to look at the newest Beta intern who returned the stare with a cool expression.
"A-ah, it's just...Musa..." The Omega attempted to correct the Beta, before he sighed at the knowledge of the uselessness and he picked up his mug once more. "Yes?" Musa then asked, beginning to retreat back in the direction of his desk and doing his best to ignore the hungry stares he got from many of the Alphas who sat in their cubicles. He should be used to them by now, but he still acted like a scared pup with his tail between his legs.
The Beta, seeming unconcerned by all of this, followed after Musa. "Alpha Villegas wants you in her office." He stated, immediately stopping right before he could collide into the back of the tense Omega.
"A-ah, I see." Musa murmured, beginning to shake at the thought of his boss and the owner of the Whitdenn Daily. "D-Did she say, w-why?" He asked in a hushed tone, though knowing the sharpness of an Alpha everyone around could probably hear their conversation.
The Beta raised an eyebrow, before he released an exasperated sigh. "You know just as well as I do not to question the demand of an Alpha." He declared.
Musa hesitantly nodded his head, before releasing a sigh of his own. "I will head her way this instant." He then told the Beta, who nodded his head before turning around and going to assure their boss that he had delivered the intended message.
Once getting to his desk near the window, at the furthest corner of the large room, Musa placed his mug on the wood before he collapsed onto his chair. The male closed his eyes tightly, attempting to keep his heartbeat and breath even paced, before he snatched up the suggestive sticky notes that had been placed on his desk while he had been gone for mere minutes. He tossed them into the trashbin, once more ignoring the snickers and stares as he picked up a small notebook and began to go on his way to meet with his boss.
Jocelyn Villegas was not that bad, as far as Alphas went. She was a hard-ass, no doubt, and a perfectionist. But she cared for her employees, as shown by where she had mercifully placed Musa's desk as well as even thinking about hiring an Omega in an environment that was intended only for those who were sure to make it in the world. She was demanding, unpenetrable, and most importantly...
"Musa, it's so good to see you!"
Motherly was always one of the first few words that popped into Musa's mind, especially when every time the Alpha female saw him she had to wrap her arms around his bigger frame and pepper his face with kisses.
"A-Alpha Villegas!" Musa whined as the intern closed the door to the woman's office to give the two privacy. Though, no matter how hard the ravenette attempted to push Jocelyn away, he was certainly no match to her Alpha strength.
"Hush it, Musa, it's not everyday I get to see my second favorite Omega." Jocelyn demanded, placing one last kiss on his temple. "Now, how have you been?" Finally gesturing for the male to sit down, the two were only separated by a desk as Musa finally allowed himself to relax as her calming scent surrounded him, promising him the protection he couldn't say was shared with the Alphas in the next room over.
"I've been...Fine." Musa hesitated, seeming to try and form the right words so as to not upset the woman who was staring at him with protective blue eyes. "Honestly, I'm very thankful that you gave me this job despite my rank..." He drifted off, noticing how her stare had hardened.
Musa had known Jocelyn since he was in middle school. Her parents had taken him in just as the adoption agency he was sent to gave up on him finding a good home. He had been accepted with open arms by the blonde and her family, and he had promised himself he'd make it up to them in any way he could. And if there was at least one thing that Musa was good at, it was being stubborn.
"Musa." Hearing the voice of the woman he was lost in thought about, the ravenette quickly shook his head and stared at Jocelyn as she stared at him with a strained expression. "Do you know why I gave you this job?" She asked him.
"I've heard rumors, but I don't believe that any of them are real." Musa sheepishly admitted.
Jocelyn shook her head and stood up. "It's because you're a hard worker." She began, walking around her desk and sitting on the edge of it, her knees touching Musa's own. "It's because I know that no matter what is thrown in your way, you'll pull through."
"Is there a reason that you wanted me to come in here?" Musa asked, looking away from the female as he changed the topic. He could feel the heat that rushed up to his cheeks at her compliment, and his throat felt constricted, and he was sure that it wasn't because of his collar.
Now Jocelyn looked sheepish, as she laughed and rubbed the back of her head. "Ah, well, you see...I've got a new story that I want you to work on." She stated.
Musa blinked. He then tilted his head and raised a curious eyebrow. "Is there another new artifact at the museum?" He asked, a bit too excited, and causing Jocelyn to laugh once more. Though, this time she seemed to be a bit more amused.
"No, not this time." Jocelyn shook her head, standing up once more and returning to standing behind her desk. "I think that it's time that I give you a real article to write this time. Something that only I can trust you to handle." She stated, opening a drawer after unlocking it and pulling out a file.
"Wait, what?" Musa gawked as he watched Jocelyn sit down and push the vanilla envelope across the oak surface of her desk.
"Packs have begun to pop up more and more, as you've noticed. They all have their odd reasonings, most very different than others, but all disrupting peace in some way." Jocelyn started her explanation as Musa hesitantly picked up the folder and began to glance through the few contents that were placed inside of it.
He was well aware of the sudden rise of packs, they were the gangs that consisted of an odd hierarchy of Alphas, Betas, and Omegas. Some were trying to make changes, both good and bad, while the other more small packs just wanted to pick fights and prove who were the toughest.
"I had recently talked to an informant that had received information that there will be something big going on between the Three King Packs." Jocelyn said, causing Musa's eyes to snap up and lock with hers, his hands beginning to shake as he already knew where this was headed. "The issue with this is that we don't know what that issue is. That's where you come in, Musa." She stated, placing her elbows on the desk and leaning towards him. "I want you to join one of the Three King Packs, and get the inside scoop."
"You want me to...what?!" Musa squeaked, sinking back into his chair and just honestly wishing that it would swallow him right then and there.
"I know that it sounds like I want you to do something very big." Noticing his moment of panic, Jocelyn was out of her chair and kneeling in front of him within a second, grabbing his hands and soothingly rubbing her thumbs against his knuckles. "And it is. You have always wanted to make a difference in the world, Musa, and this is one of the best opportunities to do it. I can't get any of the others to do it, they'll instantly butt heads with the leaders of the packs and everything will be ruined." She insisted.
Jocelyn then sighed and reached her hand up, cupping Musa's face as the male instinctively nuzzled against her touch. "You know that I wouldn't put your life into harms way if I didn't think you could do it. Don't you?" She asked, stroking his cheek affectionately as the male hesitantly nodded his head in agreement.
Musa Kendall was called a house pet for many reasons, and in all honesty...he probably was one.
