Coffee (Revised)

The morning was brisk, cool, and windy on the Edge, the Night Terrors sluggishly turning in for the day, while the rest of the Island began tending to their daily duties. Snotlout walked into the clubhouse, eyes heavy with sleep, his dragon slowly trailing behind him from last night's patrol.

Hiccup looked up from where the team was seated, eagerly digging into their morning breakfast. The firepit lit in the middle providing warmth from the cool drafts of air. He pushed a plate toward the stocky Viking with a soft smile. "Finished with patrol?"

Snotlout grunted, sitting next to the lean viking, stabbing his fork into the fresh cut meat. "Yeah, nothing but Terrors and the occasional scream from the twins hut, no surprise there."

Hiccup smiled again, grabbing a basket of fish, heading toward the exhausted dragon. Hookfang perked up at the sight, digging in as soon as he set it down. With a scratch on the Nightmare's chin, Hiccup addressed the room. "Speaking of the twins, you two are up for today's patrol."

"Why do we have to do the morning shift!" Tuffnut whined petting Chicken's coat, taking a quick bite of his lamb.

"Yeah? We were in the middle of doing something... what exactly were we doing that was so important?" Ruffnut asked, tapping her chin. She took a sip from her cup thoughtfully.

Her brother shrugged. "Beats me."

The two continued eating.

"Well on that cheery note, Snotlout gets some rest, Ruff and Tuff finish up and get started, and Astrid mind giving me and Toothless a hand with the Nadders today?" Hiccup asked.

"Sure," She smiled, grabbing her axe leaning against the table, strapping it to her back.

"Remember, you guys need to at least cover the north and west sites of the Island. Fishlegs will take up the East and South points, got it?" Hiccup asked directly, his sight-line strict toward the two pranksters, deliberately ignoring him.

Ruff rolled her eyes, playing with her food. "Yeah, yeah, then we take care of stables, we know. You really need to change the script, it's really annoying."

oOo
The twins were doing their last rotation on the island, checking off their map every now and then, looking left and right when a Nadder flashed in front of them, its orange scales blinding them. The impact between the two sent the Zippleback spiraling toward the thick treetops of the pine forest below. With a panicked roar, the Zippleback struggled to stabilize itself opening his wings but the muscles wouldn't budge against the strong wind. Without the control of wings, the twins continued yelling their heads off.

"I regret nothing!" The male yelled his grip tight on his dragon's horns.

"I REGRET EVERYTHING!" His sister screamed, hanging onto her helmet.

The Zippleback crashed, bucking their riders off their leather saddles. The twins landed brutally, the momentum launching them in some bushes as they rolled one final time.

"Oh man, that was AWESOME! We should totally do that again!" Tuffnut cheered, dazed as he jumped back up.

"Sure! Though I think I broke something," Ruff said, rubbing her lower half with a wince. "That hurt."

The twins looked at what Ruffnut crushed in the thicket, her brother kneeling down. It looked like brown powder. It also had a weird scented aroma to it. Almost a dark earthy smell to it, as Tuffnut squeezed it between his fingers. Now that they looked around the seeds and cherries that also contain the weird bean were everywhere.

"What is this stuff, bro?" She asked, rolling a bean between her fingers as well.

"Don't know but yikes it tastes nasty! I'd give it a zero on the delicacy scale." He said, spitting out the nut.

"Really?! Let me try." Ruff tried it as well, spitting out the foul bean. They glanced at each other before they grinned. "Hey, say we take some back to the edge and make some nasty yak drink for Snotlout to try."

"I agree, dear sister. Let the gates of Hell open." Tuff grinned, headbutting her sister in excitement. The twins found Barf and Belch dazed, but unharmed not far from where they landed. They grabbed their satchels and gathered as many beans they could carry. Once the bags were full of the crushed nuts they headed back to the edge, landing near the clubhouse.

The place was quiet, but occasional sounds of conversations filled the room. Hiccup, Astrid, and Fishlegs stood together marking down the Nadders behavioral habits, count, and possible relocation sectors for the migration season in the next few months. HIccup furiously wrote down notes as Astrid pointed out small stop points on the map rolled out in front of them. They glanced toward the twins entrance.

"How was your patrol?" Astrid asked, placing her hand on her hip.

"The lands of Dragon's Edge are clear from all ravenous villains, but we did find some weird beans." Tuff responded.

"We were on patrol when a Nadder spooked Barf and Belch. We crashed, but we did land on some bushes which had beans attached, so we tried them and decided hey, why not. So we snatched them and now we're here." She crossed her arms, smug. “But, yeah, the Edge is secure.”

Hiccup hummed, facing Astrid. "That must've been the Nadder we were looking for." She nodded in agreement. "And what are you planning with said 'beans'?”

"Science. See ya!" The twins said, quickly running away from the tyrannt.

Hiccup sighed, facing Fishlegs. "Alright then, Fishlegs, Astrid and I can finish, go ahead and get started on patrol. I’ll send a terror mail if we need you."

The viking smiled, with a quick nod and left the Clubhouse. "You got it."

Astrid lifted an eyebrow, her gaze toward the entrance of the Clubhouse. "We should probably keep an eye on them. This has disaster written all over it."

"Since when do we don't?" Hiccup asked her incredulously.

oOo

The twins headed to their hut and quickly dumped all their contents on the table. The twins just stared at it for a while trying to come up with something. "Well we can try some simple things like milk?" Ruff wondered out loud, reaching for a couple cups and bowls.

"I guess," He replied with a shrug.

The twins crushed some nuts with a rock until it was properly blended into a soft powder. Who knew they could cook. They didn't really, but once an idea, a simple one, can lead to exceptional skills for the profit of mischief. Except the salty crusted sea bass. No one wants to try that again, not even the twins. They’ve declared that dish a failure, but a success for any Lokiing potential. Next, they sifted the powder making sure no branches or any debris was left behind. They grabbed two cups filling it with warm yak milk already prepared, dumping a spoonful of the powder.

"Ok taste test number one." Tuff said, grabbing his cup. His sister followed. Together they clinked their cups.

"Bottoms up!" Ruff said, raising her cup.

They both down the drink and they immediately spat it out. "Oh man, that is disgusting!" Tuff spat out, wiping his mouth. "And we thought salted crusted sea-bass was bad. I mean my teeth feel chalky. Why does my mouth feel chalky?!"

"Bro, you look at me like I know! Maybe we should crush it with water? Water it down because that is not meant for human consumption. I bet our yak that not even our dragons could handle this."

"You do realize we're trying to Loki Snotlout? Pretty sure we just divided from our primary mission, sis."

"I agree. We will set this batch aside for him, but I'm curious. Can something so foul turn exquisite? It needs something, something grand." Ruff explained.

"Uh... yes. We need...um how about something sweet, maybe yakmilk with melted sugar this time. Like the way Mom makes yak gravy." Tuff answered.

"That's it! We could use some sugar. One question: how much sugar do you want to pour in the drink?" Ruff wondered, grabbing a sac of sugar from the wooden shelf to her left.

"How about two cups of sugar. How does that sound? One cup for each portion?"

"That sounds perfect!"

The twins grabbed the sack of sugar and made a new batch of the drink. This time they boiled it over a small flame until the liquid became a bubbling concoction. They poured the new batch of the weird nut drink into some new cups. They put one cup of sugar into each cup and stirred the hot drink. The twins once again raised their cups and downed the drink like a yak in a heat wave.

The moment the liquid touched her tongue Ruff spat it out. "Loki! I think one cup of sugar is WAY too much!"

Later hearing a gagging sound. "Oh man! That was way too sweet!" Tuffnut grabbed a dirty cloth wiping his tongue. “Okay, okay, okay, numero duo is a failure.”

Ruffnut groaned, clutching her head as her body hurriedly consumed the sugar, her heart beating quicker than her thoughts, turning around only to find Tuffnut passed out on the floor. "Wait a minute!? Maybe we can lower the amount of sugar and NOT pour the sugar in the cups, but in the pan!" She snapped her fingers and headed to the kitchen making another batch, waiting for her brother to come back around and try another batch. “And maybe then pour cool yak milk.” She grinned. “Ruff, you are a genius.”

Once Ruffnut finished she got the cups ready quickly due to the sugar rush. She was going to dump water on her brother to wake only to find he wasn't there. She looked left and right, looking under the bed where Chicken was sleeping soundly. Their Zippleback curled on the rafters below her.

"That's not good." Was the first thing she thought.

oOo
Tuffnut was bouncing up and down like a toddler with a giddy smile, his hair swaying uncontrollably. He headed toward the Clubhouse only finding Hiccup and Toothless. The former is sitting against his dragon calmly reading a book while his dragon sunbathed from the sun rays that entered from the entrance.

"Hiccup!" Hiccup jumped, startled looking up from his book. "Hiccup! Hiccup! Hiccup! Hiccup!" Tuffnut said it so fast not even Thor or Loki could understand him. "Hiccup! Hiccup! Hiccup! Hiccup!"

Hiccup sighed, closing his book. He leaned back against the Night Fury's hide. "What is it,Tuff?

The excited viking jumped up and down, grabbing a broom and hastily sweep the wooden floor, passing Hiccup who was giving him a worried look."I have the Hiccups in the back of my throat, that's what!" Tuffnut slapped his knee, laughing.

Hiccup got to his feet. “Tuffnut, are you alright?” He tossed his book onto the table. He had a feeling it would be awhile before he could continue reading.

Tuffunt gave him a wide grin that unsettled his friend. “Never better! Ah, I feel so alive! Like I can fly…No! I can fly.”

Hiccup let out a panicked yell as Tuffnut rushed out of the Clubhouse, flapping his arms. Until he reached the edge of the platform. Tuffnut screamed once his feet left the safety of the platform. He fell before something wet grabbed his feet. He looked up as Toothless pulled him slowly back, his rider gazing at him with a hard and worried eyes. He placed both hands on his hips, as his heart settled down.

Tuffnut whooped. “That was AWESOME!”

Hiccup blinked, before glancing at his dragon. The two made eye contact. He groaned. “Never do that again, ever. Understand?”

“Loud and clear.” Tuffnut saluted before he ran off, laughing.

Hiccup sighed, his fingers bridging his nose. “Okay, I think I’m calling it. We better find out what those Twins are up to before they get themselves killed.”

He didn’t get far. "Hiccup!" Ruff yelled, spotting him, rushing toward the Clubhouse. "Hiccup, have you seen Tuffnut?"

Hiccup placed his hands on his hips.  "You mean the fact he jumped in here jumping up and down uncontrollably while saying my name constantly, and then jumped off the platform." Hiccup recalled, staring hard at Ruff who shrugged not bothered by her brother’s behavior. “You mind telling me what this is all about?”

"Just a little experiment, nothing to worry about, H.” Ruff said. “Not important, what is important, is finding my idiotic brother before he falls off another cliff." She answered, leaving him behind, continuing her search.

"Okay, let's just recon and stay at a very safe distance. Oh, what am I saying, there is no safe distance." Hiccup muttered, wishing he could go back and finish his book, but glancing at the back of Ruffnut he let out a groan.

Toothless nodded in agreement as Hiccup mounted his saddle and secretly flew off to find out what the twins were up to.

"Woah bro, you look hideous!" Ruff replied, funding her brother covered in mud and half submerged in the bushes an hour later. She found him near the docks, his once hyperactive energy was now simmering down to flickering embers as he laid face down on the dock.

A long groan came from the exhausted viking. "I think my organs switched sides!" He croaked out.

She ignored him. "Ok, anyways, I made a new batch of the drink and this time I put less sugar. It should be ready I think." She tapped her chin before waving the thought away. "Well I hope because I really need to clean off the spill off my shirt." Ruff added, stretching her shirt to get a better look.

Tuff groaned as he got up. "W-well ok let's get going, though let's face it, sis, you need to clean more than just your shirt!"

"Hey! Don't disrespect the badge, bro. Come on, let's get this over with. The sooner we finish the sooner we can prank Snotlout, but first I want to see how this turns out."

The twins walked back to their hut, Ruff dragging her brother from the collar, who swayed in a drunken daze. Hiccup peaked his head out from the overhang, his dragon close behind. "Well, Tuff seems fine... no surprise there. So what do you say bud? Do you want to keep an eye on them or… we could take a flight. Thor, knows I need one."

Toothless cooed what sounded like a yes. "Ok, bud I say let's go on a quick flight. We’ll check the twins later." Hiccup mounted toothless and took off into the late afternoon sky.

He groaned as his doubts trinkled into his mind. "...We should probably do a quick fly over their hut... just for precautions."

oOo

The twins finally got to their huts and eagerly grabbed another cup full of the so-called nut drink. They really wanted this to be over with and accidentally spilled a little bit of their new drink. "Now you've done it!" Ruff called out, wiping the mess away with a clena cloth.

"Whatever, just pour it." Replied Tuff. They raised their cups to their mouths and drank the liquid. "Wow, that is actually not that bad. Not too yucky and not too sweet. What do you think, sis?"

"Hmmmm, I agree. It's Perfecto. I think we nailed it. Obviously, we could try different combinations, but really I’m too tired to even bother, and we made a mess. Let's go rub this in Hiccup's face!" The two left, disregarding the mess they left behind.

"Wait, we still need to call it something. How about nuttfart?" Tuff offered as they made their way to the Clubhouse.

"That's not bad but I think we should call it nutty nut." His sister replied.

"What, no, mine was way better!"Tuffnut defended.

"Was not!"

"Was too!"

"Was not!"

"Lier, liver pants on fire" Tuffnut blurted out as the two glared at each other fiercely.

"W- was… wait what?!"

"Hah! I won!" Tuff cheered out.

"Oh… yah!"

Ruff tackled Tuff to the ground, knocking everything down as she pulled his hair, including all the powdered brown nuts and the drink all over the place. Tuff sniffed the powder and started coughing like crazy. Ruff just laughed at the misery on her brother’s face.

"Cough… hurts so much." He whined, wrapping an arm around his waist.

Ruff laughed harder and wasn't paying attention to the floor and slipped." Fee!" She yelled as she landed with a thud.

"Wait, that 's it," Tuffnut said, snapping his fingers. Ruff just looked like he grew a second head. "Really huh! Well what is it?"

"Coffee!" Tuff answered, rolling his eyes.

"How do you come up with that?" She questioned.

"Well I coughed and when you slipped you went ‘fee!’, so I put the two words and bing! My clever brain created the word coffee." Tuff announced, puffing out his chest a little. Well, as much as his small, lean chest could.

"You know it's not a bad name, actually." She said. Okay, she can give her brother that one, it did strangely fit, as did Milk pops that they made years ago when the two were in a fevered haze as Eel Pox swept through their village.

"Ok, all in favor say Ruffnut stinks!" Her brother said with a wicked grin.

"Ruffnut stinks!" They said in unison, before Ruff’s brain caught up to her actions. With a yell, she punched her brother on the arm. "What?! Hey, you made me say that!"

"You said it, not me!" He said, wiping himself off.

The twins left their huts and headed to the clubhouse again, finding the gang chatting, Fishlegs happily tending to Meatlug’s wings, rubbing a sweet-smelling oil onto the thin appendages. Hiccup retired from his flight not too long ago, his nose back into the book he borrowed from Fishlegs. Astrid rolled her eyes at the young man, sharpening her ax with a slow drag against the blade with a stone. She tried talking to him on multiple occasions, but the lean viking was lost in his own world. It amused her more than it angered her, watching as his nose crinkled a bit when got to an intriguing section.

"Hey guys we made something awesome! The nuts we found aren't that bad when you boil it and add a little bit of sugar.” Tuff asked, dumping all the items onto the table in front of the gang. “So you guys want to try it or not?”

"Tuffnut, we would be fools if we fell for this again. Last time you fixed something the dragons went nuts and tried to kill us. So no, no trying." Snotlout said, shaking his head. The gang nodded their heads in agreement.

"I'll try it."

Everyone turned their heads toward Hiccup, incredulously. "Well we don't know if it's good or not so why not give it a try." He said, leaning against the table.

Astrid sighed. “Might as well hand me a cup, but if I die I’m killing you.” She pointed her ax to both the Twins and Hiccup.

The twins gleamed as they hurriedly brought a cup and poured the dark liquid. They poured one for everyone, the aroma and steam circulating the room. Hiccup grabbed his cup, swirling it around a little hesitant before he took a careful sip. Snotlout watched his every move, waiting for him to spit it out, but when the lean viking hummed thoughtfully, he grabbed his own cup taking a chug.

"Huh… that is... actually not that bad, at all." Fishlegs said, taking another sip. “Could use more sugar, though.” The gang each had their own thoughts. Astrid thought it would be better if it had more milk, Snotlout wanted more of both as he chugged the rest of it down. Hiccup found that while he wasn’t a fan of it being plain, it was something he could get used to, and if memory serves him right just having a few cups of this got the twins hyper. If he was able to make it his own, late nights would become easier for him when things got a little too much.

Astrid sat her cup down, rubbing her fists. “Do you guys have a name for it?”

"Coffee." The two said with wide smirks.

"Coffee?” Fishlegs asked, giving Hiccup a sideways glance. The lean viking only shrugged. He’s heard worse names.

"Yes, this new found concoction will be forever known as Coffee, we came up with it since we are the most creative element of the group." Tuffnut said, tapping his helmet and puffing his chest out toward their new achievement. Ruff nodded her head in agreement.

"Well, if you think about it, it fits." Fishlegs pipped up, pouring himself a cup of water to ease his burning tongue a little.

Ruff smirked. "Oh just a fair warning, the coffee will keep you all up all night."

Hiccup shook his head. “I figured as much, so I think we all agree while we like the drink it would be best if we consumed it less often.” He said. “Well gang, let’s call it a day.”

Everyone voiced their agreements as they mounted their dragons, leaving toward their respectful huts. Hiccup watched as the twins grabbed their items talking in excited whispers. He grabbed the sack of sugar and handed it to Tuff, picking up their dishes used for dinner and cleaned them. He smiled as Toothless picked up a towel and handed it to his rider.

“Got to say guys, I’m surprised to say I may have judged you guys too soon.” Hiccup said, drying a plate.

The twins beamed at the sentiment. Tuffnut grinned. “Your positivity gives us inspiration, H.” He bowed as their leader rolled their eyes.

Hiccup finished the dishes, his hands on his hips. “You guys get some sleep. We’re going to need your help for the Nadders tomorrow.”

The two saluted, taking their items with them as their Zippleback followed them out. It wasn’t long before a small explosion below the Clubhouse shook the foundation. Even from a distance HIccup could still hear the bickering between the siblings.

He sighed as Toothless nudged his arm, crooning. He rubbed his hand over the Night Fury’s scales. “I know, bud, but it's our turn for night patrol.”

He snorted as his dragon gave him an affronted look. He walked to a chest, quickly opening it, pulling out a light purple tail. He presented it to his dragon who gave it a curious sniff. “But that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun, right?”

He chuckled at the excitement pouring into his dragon’s eyes. “Let’s see what this tail can do.”
