Chapter 8 - Admission Test

Katsuki didn't go out for the rest of the week and avoided class 1-A if he could help it. He did chat with the squad sometimes and he actually texted Deku to tell him the taser worked nicely. He had it on him now as well, even if he was surrounded by people he trusted to never lay a hand on him.

"Welcome back, Bakugou" Aizawa spoke, standing in front of the entrance of the main school building. Katsuki could see the construction of the dormitories from here, seeing most of them were already built. UA wasn't wasting any time on this thing, were they?

"We reviewed your submission papers. Honestly, I am a little surprised with your choice. I didn't think you were interested in joining the support course" his former homeroom teacher spoke.
"But your preliminary test checked out, so you can take the admission test if you wish to"

The preliminary test was more of a formality, really. Send in together with his submission to join another course. He sent them blueprints of some of his older projects that he and his mom used to work on to convince the school he was being serious about it. Katsuki didn't think it was strange to switch to the support course, seeing as his mom had also done it and both his parents were in the business. He'd been surrounded by hero suits and support items his whole life and he couldn't imagine it any other way.

Originally, he wanted his parents to work for him when he became a hero. But plans change and after a long talk about his future, he decided he wanted to join the business and work with them instead. He hadn't told anyone about it yet, knowing UA set high standards and joining the support course in the middle of the year won't be easy.

He'll have to prove his worth in this admission test and if he failed... Well, he didn't want people to know it if he didn't get into his first choice. He was still Bakugou Katsuki after all. Failing wasn't an option. Yet he was nervous, something he never was before. Now that he knew what it felt like to be calm and relaxed the difference in pressure was immense.

"That's why I'm here, isn't it?" the ash blonde sighed, looking at Aizawa sensei.
"Alright, let's head inside. You'll take a theoretical test first. After that you'll be given a practical problem and access to the workshop" the pro hero explained. Katsuki nodded along as he followed the black ray of sunshine through the halls.

His feet traced the familiar path as his eyes trailed towards the giant windows that covered one side of the hallway. You could see all the way down the mountain from here. See some of the training grounds too. Most of them were behind the school building though. Katsuki almost didn't stop as they arrived at the classroom, his feet wanting to walk all the way down towards 1-A instead of resting at the door of 1-F.

Well, he better get used to it because this class was the one he hoped to get access to soon enough.
"If you succeed then this will be your homeroom class" Aizawa explained further, opening the door. The classroom was almost an exact replica of his old classroom, which was to be expected.

"Ah, you're here"

Katsuki looked down a little to see Power Loader, one of the teachers. He'd never actually talked to the guy before, only seen him around in the hallway. He did know he was involved in the support course a lot, so that would explain why he was here.

"Power Loader is the homeroom teacher of class 1-F, he'll be the one to take your examination" Aizawa stated, now looking at his colleague.
"I'll be in the teacher's lounge if you need anything"
With that he left, leaving Power Loader in charge of the ash blonde teen.

"I heard about what happened with your quirk... I'm truly sorry" the man stated.
"Isn't your fault" Katsuki mumbled, glancing aside. He didn't like talking about what happened. It brought up all those bad memories again. Of him suffering, feeling like he could collapse any moment as the villains closed in on him. Of how he was tied to a chair, cuffed and muted.

Of the faces of his classmates who couldn't save him... The face of that creepy hand guy way too close to his or the ugly stapled scarred skin of their pyromaniac... And that smell... God, it smelled awful in there! With a shaky breath, he pushed those images away. This wasn't the place nor the time to be having a traumatic flashback. He didn't want their pity.

"Let's just get this test over with..."

"Yes, of course! Here is your test. Sit down wherever you want and if you need any extra papers just call out. You'll have 3 hours to make it" Power Loader explained as he handed Katsuki a small bundle of papers. Katsuki hummed, walking over to the closest desk and taking the pen that was handed to him together with the test. It was pretty standard stuff.

Mostly math and physics, but also technical questions. Explaining certain systems to see if you understood it and giving the uses of tech that was used in day to day life as well as in the hero world. Katsuki already expected something like this, it's what he prepared himself for. So after 2 hours, he got up and handed his test over to Power Loader.

"Do you have a question?" he asked, confused.
"I'm done" the teen claimed, slightly shocking the teacher. Normally students work through the full three hours and most can't even complete the test! He didn't show his surprise though and started looking at his answers. Surely they can't be as advanced as his current students, right? He probably skipped the ones he didn't understand-

"...You answered everything"
"Yeah? Isn't that the point?" Katsuki asked, frowning a bit. Why the hell does he sound so surprised?
"...These answers are... Well, I need to do some calculations to make sure but at first glance, everything seems to check out" Power Loader breathed.

"So does that mean I can start with the second part?" Katsuki asked, raising a brow. Was the teacher really that impressed? Or did he just have low expectations? That was probably it, right? He was known as that loud aggressive blonde from the hero course. Nobody would look at him and go 'Hm, yes, this one is smart' now would they?

He was at the top of his class academically speaking and the precise use of his explosions takes skill and calculation. Well, it used to, at least... But most people didn't have that kind of information on him so he couldn't blame them for having a different image of him. Even if that makes the public think of him as a villain...

"Right! The second part! Follow me"

Katsuki was pulled out of thought by that, mindlessly following the pro hero towards the workshop. It wasn't all that far, only a few rooms down. Guess it makes sense for it to be close to the classrooms of the support course...

"Here is your case! A hero has a quirk that alters the gravitational force on their body, making it seem like they're walking on the moon at all times. This hero can't cancel his quirk and will float into space if he jumps too high. It's your job to design and make shoes that allow them to alter the weight in order to control their movement. Since this is a test, a design and a theoretical concept of how the device would work is enough to pass, but you're allowed to try and build it for extra points. I'll be supervising to make sure you don't get yourself killed"

"Is there a time limit?" Katsuki asked, ideas already floating through his mind. Ha. Floating. Like that pathetic hypothetical hero who can't even control their own damn quirk! Unrealistic scenario, really. A loser like that would never be able to become a hero. But it's the idea that counts, I guess.
"Let's say 5 hours at most. We still have to evaluate the results today" Power Loader spoke, placing a paper on Katsuki's workbench.

"These are the specifics of the case. You can use scrap paper to dribble down ideas. The actual worksheets on which you will draw your final design and measurements are over there. Make sure to attach a technical explanation and the theoretical construct on which the mechanism is based. You can use all the tools and material available"
Katsuki hummed, taking the paper and reading it through.

After that he took a pencil and started dribbling on the scrap paper. It didn't take long for him to stand up and take out the good paper, drawing his design and putting down the measurements. He put some extra information on the material on there too, but made sure it didn't become a mess and everything was still very clear. Unlike what most people think, he actually has a nice handwriting and since he needs to be accurate with his blasts, he also has a steady hand.

Or...used to, at least. Being able to accurately use his explosions, that is. He can still draw a straight line without a ruler with little to no struggle. When that was done, he started writing the technical report. It included more detailed information about the system and the materials, as well as a draft like manual on how to operate the shoes.

He glanced at the clock, seeing 3 hours had passed already and his hand was getting tired from writing so much. But he still had 2 hours left to go and he wasn't going to accept a pass. No, he wanted to nail this thing with flying colours. Katsuki is nothing but a perfectionist, with or without a quirk. Power Loader watched in amazement as the blonde student started selecting materials and already got the base of the shoes down when time ran out. To say the pro was impressed was an understatement.

"Where did you learn all of this?" he asked as he looked over the design and technical report.
"Oh, my parents design hero outfits and matching support items. I used to help them out a bit before I came to UA" Katsuki shrugged.
"You could say I kinda grew up with it"

"Alright, I still need to run this by some teachers but you'll have your results soon. Oh, you must be hungry, right? There should be food in the teacher's lounge. I need to talk to Eraserhead about this anyway"
Katsuki didn't argue and just followed him. That was something else that got the teacher suspicious.

Not only was this so-called troublesome child, or problem kid as Eraser called it, very profound in this field, he also hadn't talked back even once! If he needed to believe the stories going around in the teacher's lounge about this teen, he was supposed to have a big foul mouth and a problem with his fellow students. Yet he hadn't seen anything of the sort this whole day... The rumours were probably exaggerated a little bit, but still... They did have to tie him up at the Sportsfestival.

Well, not that he was complaining! All the better if he was as calm and organised like he was today! The last thing he needs is an explosive student handling high tech equipment. He sighed as he gave a knock on the door to the teacher's lounge before entering. Katsuki was right behind him, instantly looking away at the scene he just witnessed. Aizawa sensei and Yamada sensei were kissing. Gross... He didn't want to get involved in his teachers' love life.

"A-ah! You're done testing?" Present Mic squeaked as Eraserhead pushed him away.
"Yes, is Nezu in his office? We were going to go over the results together" Power Loader stated, not fazed by the display of affection earlier. The whole staff knew about their relationship but they tried to keep it under wraps so the students wouldn't bother them about it.

"Yes, I'll come along, I have to talk to him about the new class schedules anyway" Mic said with a forced laugh, quickly making his way out of the room. Katsuki wandered off to a fruit bowl and took an apple, glancing aside at the black haired teacher.

"...So you and Present Mic..?"

"No comment" Aizawa spoke, sipping from a purple cat mug. Probably coffee. Katsuki snorted as he read the text beneath the cat drawing. Have a Pawsome day! He knew Aizawa was into cats, seeing as he had a pencil with a cat design and once came into the classroom with a binder that had cats littered all over it. Made him wonder if the pro hero had a cat at home... Surely he did, right?

"So how did your test go?"

Katsuki shrugged. He wanted more time to finish those shoes and show them how good he actually was. Kind of a disappointment on his part. His mom will definitely scold him if she finds out he wasn't able to finish it. Or would she..? She hadn't really been acting the way she used to around him. Their relationship shifted from angry yelling and shouting and fighting to a more civil let's talk shit out kinda thing.

Anyway, her opinion on this didn't truly matter, did it? Power Loader seemed more than happy with the progress he made, so that was good.
"You think you passed?" Aizawa asked, raising a brow.
"Think so, yeah" he sighed, biting his apple. Shouta hummed, sipping from his coffee again.

Neither of them were social butterflies and this small conversation was more than enough for them. They could happily sit here in silence while awaiting the test results. Katsuki sat down while eating, taking out his phone. He promised his parents he'd let them know when he finished his admission test so he sent his mom a quick text to tell her he was waiting on the results right now.

The squad had been bothering him about keeping it all a secret and they really wanted to know which course he was going to join. Deku wasn't much better, but he kept to his boundaries. Whether or not that was because he was still scared of him or not, Katsuki didn't know. To be honest, he didn't understand that nerd's reasoning at all... One moment he is super attached, the next he's trying to get as far away from him as possible. It's like he's trying to rebuild their friendship without truly wanting to do so.

Katsuki sighed. Wouldn't surprise him if Deku just took pity on him... It's not like Izuku can actually forgive him for all the shit he's pulled, right? He was such an ass in middle school... He told him to jump off the damn roof! Yeah, there was no way they could ever revive the friendship they once had... But Deku just had to try and hurt the both of them even more, didn't he?

Katsuki should probably tell him to back off before it's too late, but something in him was just so happy that Izuku looked his way again that he couldn't bring himself to do so. He'll give up next semester when their schedules are getting bad to combine, for sure. Deku won't keep going through this trouble for him. Sooner or later he'll get tired of pitying him and he'll focus on his own studies again.

"...Are you alright?" Aizawa asked slowly. Katsuki gave him a confused look before feeling a single tear roll down his cheek. He lifted his head, wiping the wetness from his eyes.
"I'm fine... Just thinking about stuff"
Before Shouta could say anything to express his concerns, the door to the teacher's lounge opened.

"Young Bakugou! Congratulations! You passed your admission test with flying colours!" All Might exclaimed with his booming voice before collapsing into his true form, coughing up blood.
"All Might! You idiot! Don't push your body to its limit like that!" Katsuki yelled, instantly at his side.

"I-I'm alright, young Bakugou. No need to be worried!" the man smiled as he wiped the blood away. Katsuki wasn't taking any chances though and guided the man to a couch so he could sit down.
"Did you hear what he said? You passed the admission test Bakugou" Power Loader stated, now also in the room. Present Mic made his way back over to Aizawa, not really meddling in the conversation.

"Oh, uh, yeah, that's great" Katsuki answered, giving him a small smile.
"Here are your papers! New class schedule, some formalities for your parents to sign, nothing much. Maijima sensei will be your homeroom teacher. Welcome to UA's support course class 1-F!" Nezu exclaimed, pushing papers into Katsuki's hands with enthusiasm. Maijima Higari, the real name of Power Loader.

"I'm looking forward to having you in my class"  Power Loader stated, shaking Katsuki's hand.
"Yeah, thanks, me too" he answered, feeling Aizawa's stare on his back. He cried just now... Well, not really crying, more like tearing up. But he got that it was enough to send alarm bells ringing inside the pro hero's mind. It's not like Eraser had any idea what kind of personality switch Bakugou went through.

Not that his true personality changed all that much... He was still a perfectionist and super competitive in everything, he was just a lot more civil about it most of the time. His emotions did get harder to control though. Emotions that weren't connected to rage and frustration, that is. Things like sadness, joy, love... All those things that get pushed aside first when your body is in survival mode.

He doesn't know how to properly handle most of those emotions and they tend to get the better of him. He'll manage in due time though, but that's not right now. Why had he been tearing up this time around? What was he thinking about? It was Deku, wasn't it..? About how the green head would grow tired of him... Leave him... He didn't deserve any better, now did he?

Izuku should've abandoned him years ago, yet the fool still ran behind him... Why did Katsuki like it so much? Like those big green eyes on him at all times? Watching... Admiring... This time he felt the water come up to his eyes before anyone noticed and he blinked a few times while looking down at the papers in his hands. Nezu was saying something about moving into the dorms, but he wasn't exactly listening. Katsuki was sure it all stood in these papers anyway.

After the teachers congratulated him on passing, he called his parents to come and pick him up. Ever since the incident at the mall about a week ago, they weren't letting him go out on the street alone. He understood that and secretly he was even a little happy about it. That way he wouldn't have to be the one to ask them, they would just propose driving him. He didn't want to admit that he didn't feel safe out in the open right now. That he'd rather have the security of his parents...

What was he? A child? He was 15 for crying out loud! He should be able to look after himself! But then again, he was still a child. So it was okay to rely on his parents, wasn't it? To seek out their comfort and trust in their words?

"Ah Katsuki! I knew you'd be able to do it!" Mitsuki exclaimed as she ran up to her son, hugging him.
"Did you kick ass? You nailed that test, right? Don't bring shame upon our brand by just passing, you her me!"
"Mitsuki, dear, let him breathe" Masaru chuckled, gently prying the woman off their son.

"I'm pretty sure I nailed it, alright. Didn't get to finish up the practical though-" Katsuki sighed, earning a swat to the back of his head.
"Didn't get to finish the practical! Are you even a Bakugou?!"
"I didn't have enough time you damn old hag! One more hour and I would have totally obliterated all their non existent expectations of me!"

The two of them glared at each other in silence for a few more seconds before Mitsuki hugged him again.

"Oh I'm so happy for you! Never thought my son would once walk in my footsteps!"

Both Aizawa and All Might watched the exchange from a distance. It reminded the black haired man of when he had to visit the Bakugou household to talk about the new dorm system and, more importantly, whether or not Katsuki wished to continue being a student at UA high and if so, which course he'd like to apply to. They already had a submission form ready for him, making the process a lot easier.

"They really have some family dynamic, don't they?" Toshinori sighed as he watched them.
"You could say that" Shouta muttered, watching them all get into the car before they drove off.
"I looked into the Bakugou family after my visit. They own a successful company that is well known across Japan and even does business overseas. After finding out about that, his choice to join the support course made more sense to me"

"A successful business huh? What's their company name?" Yagi asked curiously.
"M2B Hero Fashion" Aizawa stated, making All Might's eyes bulge. M2B?! They are the owners of M2B Hero Fashion?! But that's the biggest hero costume manufacturer of Japan! Their slogan was a play of words based on the pronunciation of their name: Aim to be the best!

Of course he had heard of them, they even designed one of his more recent hero costumes! They also helped with support items and designed merch as well, giving heroes an all in one deal. It wasn't cheap, but it was extreme quality.

"Guess the M2B stands for Mitsuki and Masaru Bakugou" Aizawa continued.
"Now that their son isn't going to go pro anymore, they've probably decided he could take over the business later"
"Didn't they recently start working with UA?" Toshinori asked.
"Yes, since last year, actually" Shouta told him.

"But I can assure you that they didn't pull any strings to allow their son into our school"
"Oh no, I don't doubt that" Yagi quickly said.
"It's just... They could've let him join the support course on recommendation, couldn't they?"

"I don't think that's how their family dynamic works, nor how Bakugou would want to achieve his goal" the black ray of sunshine answered.
"Since his background was never mentioned, we should assume they don't want it to be known. I trust you to keep quiet about this"
"Yes, of course"
