The Meeting - Chapter 1

The Meeting- 1

Sophie stared out of the plane window, astounded by the clarity of the aqua water passing underneath her. In the background, she heard some kids joking that they were flying through the Bermuda Triangle.

"Scared, Bobofit?"

"You wish, Jenk-"

Suddenly the plane shook and the lights flickered. Sophie glanced out the window. What had just been clear blue water was now a dark marine, tinged by the roiling clouds above. Waves splashed and the watery walls slammed into each other, sending spray flying far into the air. The speaker crackled.

"Sorry folks, we seem to have hit a spot of unexpected turbulence, please buckle your safety belts and-" The speaker cut out mid-sentence. Suddenly, the water seemed to be getting closer, and Sophie realized they were about to crash.

As they plunged, an unfamiliar hand slipped into hers. Sophie turned. Her last view was a glimpse at a pair of soft brown eyes with flecks of gold. As she gazed into them, everything went black.

When Sophie woke up, she noticed the same hand in her hand, and the boy it belonged to was sitting on a chair next to her. His head was turned, so all Sophie could see was his auburn hair. She didn't hear any of the normal hospital sounds, which puzzled her. She could feel the soft bed below her, and- oh. Her head hurt. In fact, her whole body ached with a resounding throb. The door burst open. Sophie turned her head just enough to see a man rush in, looking startled. His floppy brown hair was all over the place like he just woke up, and his long arms and legs made him look like a gangly teenager, though he was clearly not. He looked around 30.

"I came as soon as I could, Lyrik," he said. Then he rushed over to her and softly spoke, "It's going to be alright, Sophie." How does he know my name? And Sophie blacked out again.

This time, when she woke up, her body was free of pain, only her head throbbed. The man was still there, nodding off in a chair next to her bed. The boy named Lyrik was gone. She sat up slowly, rubbing her eyes, and looked around. She was in a bedroom far more beautiful than anything she had ever seen. The walls were adorned with simple paintings, the colors seemed to flow together. Sophie slowly got out of bed and stood up. She walked around the room a few times, then tried the door. It was locked. She was trapped.

"Aaaarrrrgh!" Sophie yelled in frustration, slumping back into bed, exhausted by the simple endeavor. Nobody was giving her any answers! Well, she would just have to take them herself. Sinking back into the pillows, she decided to wake up the man in the chair.

Sophie reached out a hand and shook his shoulder. "Hmmgm." He opened his eyes and stared at Sophie. "I am so sorry. I can't believe I fell asleep waiting for my patient to wake up. It's been three days now."

"Oh my goodness, my family must be so worried," Sophie murmured. The man wouldn't meet her eyes as he mumbled a distorted yes. Sophie had too much on her mind to linger on it. "What happened? Why am I here? Where am I? Who are you?"

The man laughed. "One question at a time. Ok, let's start with the last. I am Flinar, at your service. As to what happened... you might want to let Devdan and Lyrik explain that. I'm just the doctor - I think that's what you call them in your world." Sophie was too exhausted to process this. She fell deeper into the pillows, and Flinar leaned over her. He pulled a bottle from his flappy lab coat - except, now that she looked closer, Sophie realized it wasn't a lab coat. It was more like a robe that fell to his ankles, with thousands of tiny, labeled pockets all over it. Flinar put the glass bottle to Sophie's lips and ordered, "Drink." Sophie pushed against the bottle with her lips, but the man poured it into her mouth and held her nose. Coughing and spluttering, Sophie drank. Suddenly the room swirled and tipped, and Sophie's head fell back onto her pillow. As she closed her eyes, she could feel Flinar watching her.

Sophie slept.

As she slept, Lyrik burst into the room. "She's awake?!"

"She was," Flinar replied soothingly. "I had to put her to sleep to run the tests. I was just about to when you came in."

"Oh, sorry, I didn't know." He backed out of the room. Flinar stared intently at Sophie, his face screwed up in concentration. He gasped and stumbled backward.

"No way," he whispered. "It's impossible."
