Rikki Rogers is an author that lives near Washington D.C. and has a son. She has had a hard life, but she has had to overcome her adversities. Everybody has their challenges and struggles, but life is about how we react to the adversities, not the adversities themselves.

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry was a book written by Mildred Taylor. The story was set in the time of the Civil Rights act. The family in the book were being bullied because they were African-American and had a different skin color. Through their struggles, they grew stronger as a family and helped others out. My philosophy is that to be strong, we need to help others be strong.

Overcoming adversity reveals who we really are. "Adversity is like a strong wind. It tears away from us all but the things that cannot be torn, so we see ourselves as the way we are." Arthur Golden said this quote in his book Memoirs of a Geisha. I love this quote. It rings true. The challenges in our lives may knock us down, but every time you get back up, you get stronger and stand taller.

"The only difference between a good day and a bad day is your attitude." Dennis S. Brown said this. Being strong during challenges takes a good attitude. Having a smile on your face makes you feel better, even if it is a fake smile. Be positive and remember what happens to you is for your own good and will make you stronger. My class watched Remember the Titans. The story is about a school that was open during the Civil Rights Era. The black and white school combined. Nobody liked each other, but eventually learned to become friends. Their best football player, Gary, was in a car accident, but he was strong and kept a smile on even when he lost his ability to walk. We can be like Gary, we can be strong even when times are tough.
