First I'll talk about human/earthly spirits before going on to demonic spirits.

Regarding human spirits, a soul will remain in a set location (ex a house) for various reasons. Such reasons could be there's an attachment to an item in the house like if you have a strong emotional attachment to an item given to you by a loved one such as a necklace.

The bond will keep you rooted to that location. Another reason could be in the matter of how someone died. If someone died a violent/traumatic death (murder, execution, suicide) then the spirit will remain in that location often because they don't know that they're dead.

Said spirit can be asked to leave a location and sometimes will leave if they are asked to do so. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THE SPIRIT WILL LEAVE! Sometimes if the spirit is too powerful then they will not leave the location.

Either because they don't want to leave or because something else (like a demon) is forcibly keeping them present in a location. (Some people can sense a spirit's emotions just by entering a room and finding where that feeling is the strongest)

It is important to note that how you are in life will dictate how you are in the afterlife. If you were an angry and bitter person in life then you would become an angry and aggressive spirit in death. It goes both ways, if you were a happy and peaceful person in life then you would be a calmer and possibly protective spirit.

Moving on to demons, demons are evil beings that can be summoned in a few different ways. Demons can influence thought and urge someone to commit some acts that they typically wouldn't do when in their usual state of mind.

Demons can give thoughts such as stealing to extremes such as murder or even suicide. It's said demons cannot control a body completely due to freewill but there have been cases of demonic possession where people have been completely controlled by the demon.

Their eyes will often change to pure black and they will act erratic and completely unlike their normal selves. However some demons will take to mimicking the appearance and voice of the person they're possessing but making them angrier or even murderous.

One of the most famous cases of demonic possession was the case that inspired The Exorcist. Rather than the victim being a young girl the victim of the possession was a young boy. It was believed the youth was possessed by 4 different demons and/or evil entities which included the devil himself.

The only way of getting rid of a demon is to do an exorcism which is basically saying holy prayers from the Bible or another holy book and commanding the evil spirit to leave in the name of a holy figure (usually Jesus Christ)

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO AN EXORCISM! PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ATTACKED BY EVIL SPIRITS AND DEMONS CAN AND WILL KILL YOU!

That being said in order for a priest to perform an exorcism there has to be substantial evidence that says there is a demonic spirit in the location such as negative reactions to holy items. Pentagrams (a five sided star, often called a Satanic symbol) are often found in homes where a demon is present.

Another strong indicator of a demonic presence is the number 666 which is known as the number of the beast (for my fellow Iron Maiden fans) or the number of the devil.

Demons do not just show up on their own accord, they must be summoned/invited to enter a location. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND CAN RESULT IN DEATH IF YOU DO IT WRONG OR ANGER THE DEMON so don't do it

Nor all evil spirits are demons, some are human/earthly as well. Some human spirits are aggressive like demons but you can tell if it's a demon by what it does/how it acts. Demons take heat out of the air to gain more power and feed off the fear they create.

Once a demon is exorcised it's EXTREMELY important that you NEVER speak its name again or expect something to happen. Saying a demon's name is basically calling it out and inviting it to terrorize you.
