Chapter 2

When we reached the carriage, Maria helped me into the cab and then got in the front behind the reins. A moment later, we were following my father.

A million thoughts were running through my head as the carriage jumped and lurched on the uneven ground below it. The one that kept nagging me, no matter how many times I tried to suppress it, was why Maria had decided to help us. Why had she suddenly decided that helping me was the best thing for her? Dad and I weren't human. Humans were supposed to be terrified of the "supernatural", right? If so, then why is she so set on making sure I survive? Why does she want to help us find Mom? Was she even human at all?

I shook my head, trying to clear the questions from my mind. This was not the time to be questioning Maria's loyalty. I had been shot with anti-demon bullets, and we were tracking down my mother. I could save all of the questions for later.

We eventually caught up with Dad at a large pond. The tracks seemed to go right into the water.

I opened the door to the carriage and hopped out, ignoring Maria as she tried to tell me to get back in the carriage and sit down. My father didn't say a word as I approached him, trying desperately to no let my pain show. If it did, we would be back at the Phantomhive Manor or Maria's house in an instant.

Once I reached Dad, I put my hand on his arm to steady myself. He moved his arm and placed it around me. I gratefully leaned into him in an attempt to lessen the pain, and looked at the pond before us.

"I don't understand," I said. "Why would the tracks go straight into a pond? Mom said her body should be in the U.S."

Dad held me tighter. "I'm not sure," was all he said.

Maria approached us then. "Selena, I really think you should be sitting. We haven't had the chance to treat you yet."

My father and I responded at the same time:

"I'm fine."

"She's fine."

Maria took a step back.

I groaned slightly and leaned more heavily on my father as the pain in my chest grew. He noticed, surely, but didn't do anything. He knew how important this was to me. To us.

After a moment of scanning the water and ground around us, I unfurled my wings and flew up and over the pond until I was on the other side. Once there, I folded my wings and landed roughly on the ground.

I glanced up to see my father and Maria looking at me worriedly. It had probably appeared to them that I had fallen. I waved to them, trying to tell them that I was alright, then returned my gaze to the ground.

There were no more tracks, no blood, and no more dying grass. It was warmer over here. I blinked, and when my eyes opened again, I was no longer by a pond or sitting on green grass. It was no longer warm, but burning hot.

I looked around quickly and saw that everything was on fire. I saw my father and Maria looking at me, confused and worried. Even the ground they stood on was ablaze. Was I seeing things? Was any of this real?

Suddenly, a cloud of smoke surrounded my face, and I couldn't breathe. Then, it was like I was seeing into the past. There were three black carriages, all full of hunters. One of them held my mother. I could see her lifeless body through the window.

All of the sudden, there was a loud crash. I jumped, closing my eyes and covering my head instinctually. When I uncovered myself and open my eyes again, I noticed that two of the carriages had collided. The two that, luckily, had not been holding my mother.

There was fire, screams, blood. Everything was covered with a giant black cloud of smoke. The guy that survived pulled a phone from his carriage and stretched the cord as far as he could. He was calling for help.

No one seemed to notice me, confirming my suspicion that this was a vision. The man with the phone hung up and immediately left the scene. I guess having a dead body in the carriage when help arrived would look a little shady.

The vision fast forwarded to a few days after the accident. There was now a pond. Someone was at a podium talking about how the pond was in honor of the people lost in the tragic accident that had occurred. Why? They were hunters. They protected the town from unwanted, supernatural monsters that no one wanted.

There was that word again. Monster...

A few moments later, the vision faded, the fire stopped, and the smoke cleared. I was left lying on the ground, finally able to breathe again. I sat up, coughing and gasping for air, and saw that my father and Maria were both no longer on the other side of the pond. I looked around frantically until I saw Maria running toward me. There was still no sign of my dad.

"The hunters caught up with us," Maria said, panting from the run around the pond. "Your father went to hold them off. We have to get you out of here."

She helped me up, but I fought against her. I wasn't leaving without my father. I wasn't going to lose him as well. Not after what I just saw...

"Maria, I'm not leaving him!" I screamed at her.

"Selena, he'll catch up with us, I promise. Nothing is going to happen to him. Right now he wants me to get you a safe distance away from here."

"And what I want is my father!" I screamed again. I glared at her, seeing the set face of a mother who wasn't about to give in to a child, but I also saw the sadness in her eyes. She was upset that I was yelling at her like this. All she wanted was to help keep me safe. I didn't know what was happening to me.

I felt tears in my eyes again as I started to regret what I had done and true fear started to settle in. "Maria, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it. I'm scared. I want my dad..."

She hugged me tight. "It's okay, Selena. I'm scared, too. We have to get you back to the carriage now. Once we do, I'll call for your dad and we'll all get out of here, okay?"

I nodded, and let her help me back to the carriage.
