7 - Rescue Training
CHAPTER SEVEN
"For today's hero basic training, it will be a class with three instructors, All Might and me and one more person."
Aizawa sensei drawled on in his usual tired tone as he looked over at the class. Then as people started asking questions about what they would be doing, he raised a card high in the air. It was similar to the card All Might had during battle training, but instead in bold letters, the word written on it was 'Rescue'.
"So we're having rescue training today?" Megumi said out loud, amongst the murmurs from her class. "That's gonna be exciting."
The basic idea behind being heroes was saving people from harm and rescuing them from whatever danger they might be in. Thus, this class at U.A., would hold utmost importance, even though some of the class was stating that it might be boring.
"Hey, I'm not done yet," Aizawa-sensei interrupted, putting a stop to 1-A's chatter. "You can decide if you want to wear your costume or not this time." He pressed a button on the remote he was holding and similar to the day of their battle training, the cases filled with their costumes slowly popped out of the wall. "Because there are probably costumes that limit your abilities too. The training will place off-campus, so we're taking a bus."
"That is all," Aizawa-sensei said. "Start getting ready."
Everyone got up from their desks, walking over to the wall with their costumes. Natsume caught pace with Megumi as they went to pull down their suitcases. He leaned close and whispered in her ear, "You're gonna enjoy this, aren't you?"
"Oh yeah," Megumi whispered back. "Gotta make dad proud." She gently punched his shoulders as she and the other girls made their way towards the changing room.
She cracked her knuckles as she walked. 'Time to rescue some people.'
Unlike many others in her class, Megumi's costume was utterly simplistic, having no extra accessories save for the goggles she wore to protect her eyes. Plus, she had designed her costume in a way that would benefit her in case she ever got stuck in a really bad situation or she had to rescue. The belt she wore at her waist had small, rectangular pouches attached and those carried some very small first aid items.
Currently, the entire class was outside, all waiting for the bus. Everyone was either dressed in their costume, or parts of it. Some, like Midoriya, were dressed in their P.E. outfit, but with the protective coverings taken from his costume.
Megumi sat on a bench, goggles in her lap, as she stretched her fingers, continuously summoning her white flames on top of them and then erasing them immediately after. It was a warm up exercise that gave her better control over the flames; otherwise, if she summoned them, there would be a gigantic circle of white flames surrounding her (and not the protective aura part she'd got from her dad) and she'd end up burning herself.
She watched Natsume stretching as he talked with Kirishima. His transformation quirk was amazing and unlike many others, his quirk also made the tiger bulletproof. She almost called out to him when she realised someone sat next to her on the bench. Megumi nearly fell-off, only to grab the edges of the metal. She looked to her right and found herself staring at the back of a familiar, half-red half-white haired boy who was sitting the opposite way
'Oh, it's Todoroki,' She awkwardly shifted a little bit, moving away from him. 'He really had to pick the bench of all places?'
Suddenly, Iida shouted, gathering everyone's attention to him. "Class 1-A, gather round! Form two lines by your student numbers in order to make the boarding go smoothly."
They started boarding the bus slowly. As it turned, the bus wasn't a normal one; Megumi guessed it was designed this way to accommodate the quirks some may have. She snagged a place on Kirishima's left while Natsume sat on the opposite side, between Aoyama and Mina. The others sat in the seats towards the back of the bus.
Then, Iida smacked his face with his hand, bowing low, quite unlike his perfect posture. "I didn't think it would be this type of bus."
Everyone sitting laughed a little and in a teasing tone, Mina said, "There was no point in lining up, huh?"
"If we are all saying the obvious," Tsuyu chimed in. She turned to Midoriya who was sitting next to her. "Midoriya-chan...your quirk is like All Might's."
As soon as this sentence left Tsuyu's mouth, Midoriya started to look more flustered and nervous. "H-huh?! Y-y-you think so? But..I'm...uh..."
"Wait a second, Tsuyu-chan," Kirishima spoke up. "All Might doesn't get hurt when he uses his quirk. They just look the same."
Midoriya let out a sigh of relief, which Megumi noted. 'Why did he sound so relieved? Is he hiding something?'
"Still, it's nice to have a simple augmenting-type quirk. You can do lots of flashy stuff; my Hardening's strong against others, but unfortunately it doesn't look like much," Kirishima raised his arm in the air, instantly activating his quirk and hardening his skin. Megumi poked it; his arm had turned rock solid.
"I think it's really cool!" Izuku said, in the most genuine, fanboy way. "It's a quirk that can definitely pass off as a pro's."
"A pro's, huh?" Kirishima said. "But you have to think about popularity as a hero, too, you know."
"My navel laser is pro-level in both flashiness and strength," Aoyama interjected, smiling at finally getting a chance to talk about himself.
"But it's not great that it gives you a stomach ache," Mina placed a hand on Aoyama's shoulder, bluntly crushing the boy's ego.
"But if you're talking about flashy and strong quirks, it's gotta be Todoroki, Megumi and Bakugo, right?" Kirishima motioned towards Megumi on his left and the other two boys sitting at the back, effectively dragging them all into the conversation.
"Ahh, thanks...I guess," Megumi said, rubbing the back of her head in embarrassment. She'd never been good with taking plots. "But Todoroki and Bakugo's quirks are definitely more amazing."
"Bakugo's always angry," Tsuyu stated plainly as she faced the group. "So he'll never be that popular."
Natsume snickered out loud, placing his gloved hands on his knees. "Well, ain't that the truth."
"What the hell?! Do you two wanna fight?" Bakugo angrily stood up on his seat, scaring the crap out of Jiro who was sitting next to him.
The boy with the electric blonde hair, Kaminari, took this opportunity and dove right in with a remark of his own. "You know, we haven't known each other that long, so it's amazing that everyone already knows his personality is crap steeped in sewage."
"What's with your vocabulary, you idiot?! I'll kill you!" The angry boy yelled, sending a vicious glare towards Kaminari.
Megumi covered her mouth to hide her giggles. 'Kaminari is really courageous.'
As Bakugo continued to fight with Kaminari, Megumi sent in a grin towards Natsume, who was also a part of the commotion. "This is fun, isn't it?" She mouthed. Her cousin nodded and grinned back at her.
Aizawa-sensei suddenly turned towards them as the bus slowed down. "We're here. Stop messing around."
Seeing USJ in front of her, Megumi realised that her dad's stories about this place had come short of describing it properly. Standing in front of the building, she stared in awe. It was much bigger than any place she had seen.
"Everyone, I've been waiting for you," A familiar voice said, sounding like it was coming from a radio transmitter buried underwater. Megumi let out gasps with the rest of the class as they all found themselves looking at the space hero, Thirteen. She was an incredible hero, dressed in what was a massive, puffed-up, astronaut suit.
"Let's go inside without delay," Thirteen said, motioning to the entrance of the building. (Building? More like a freaking stadium)
Inside, the USJ was even more awe-inspiring. The arena was divided into zones, each of them representing a disaster and the place was full of these zones, containing every possible disaster that was known. It looked like an amusement park, but a much more dangerous one, seeing as they were here to rescue from these places.
"A shipwreck, a landslide," Thirteen started to explain. "A fire, a windstorm, etcetera...it is a training ground I made with different types of accidents and disasters. It's called the 'Unforeseen Simulation Joint' or USJ for short."
"So that's the full form," Megumi muttered. She'd never known what the acronym really meant.
Aizawa-sensei walked up to Thirteen and carried out a conversation, off which they could hear nothing, since Thirteen was whispering her answers. Then he stepped away, leaving Thirteen to explain the details of today's exercise.
"Before we begin, let me say one thing," Thirteen announced. "Well, maybe two or three or four or...five or...six..."
'The numbers are increasing,' was the collective thought in all of 1-A's minds.
Thirteen's tone suddenly turned serious. "Everyone, I am sure you are aware of my quirk, Black Hole. I can suck up everything and turn it to dust. And while I've been able to use it to save many people, at the same time, it is a quirk that can kill easily."
"Some of you also have quirks like that, right?" She continued, looking at those in 1-A with stronger quirks. Surprisingly, Megumi was included in that group. "In our society, quirks are certified and are stringently regulated, so that doesn't seem to be a problem at first glance. However, please do not forget that there are many quirks that can easily kill with one step."
'Like mine.' Megumi thought. Controlling and releasing the white flame aura from her body was a hard task and though she had mastery over it now, there were moments that she lost control and ended up burning things. The small, almost faded burn scar on the side of her neck was a testament to those few moments of lack of control.
"With Aizawa's fitness tests, you have a better understanding of the limitations of your quirk and with All Might's battle training, you've learnt how these powers will work against others," The space hero spoke on, voice strong and full of purpose. "This class is a fresh start. You shall learn how to use your quirk to save people's lives. You do not have powers so that you can harm others. I hope you leave here with the understanding that you have powers in order to help others. That is all. Thank you all for listening."
Thirteen bowed to the class and they all cheered for, applauding and saying words of praise for the space hero.
"Okay, let's start with..." As Aizawa-sensei was about to start with the class, the lights of USJ began to flicker and malfunction and then, they dimmed, covering them in a little more darkness. From the distance, they could all see that the disaster zones had also started malfunctioning.
Megumi's eyes fell on the fountain straight ahead. It looked like a portal was opening in the middle of it. Her sixth sense went wild as what looked to be villains (of all shapes and sizes) stepped out of the fountain. What the hell was going on? Were these fake villains part of their training? But something told her that this was not correct. There was something about these villains that gave her dangerous vibes.
"Everyone stay back!" Aizawa-sensei yelled, his voice suddenly alert and full of authority. "Thirteen, protect the students!"
"Woah, what is that?" Kirishima exclaimed. "Has the training started already?"
Megumi took a step forward with Kirishima and Natsume and some others, but immediately flinched back as Aizawa-sensei snapped at them.
"Don't move!" He said, putting on his yellow goggles. A grimace appeared on his face.
(If he was putting on his goggles, then it must be bad.)
"This is real," He gruffly explained as he eyed the enemy. "Those are real villains."
Megumi tensed in shock. 'What the hell, what the hell! Villains?! Actual freaking villains?! How are they even at U.A??'
(When she had thought to expect the unexpected, a villain attack wasn't even on the list. What the hell were they supposed to do now?)
ANOTHER UPDATE!! I've realised that for this story, if I write one chapter, then I'll have enough inspiration to finish the next chapter as well but then I won't touch the story for a week. It's kinda weird but I'm loving how I'm able to quickly finish chapters for this. I just love writing Megumi tbh. Now, this was just a simple filler chapter, but I hope you all enjoyed reading this. The next chapter will definitely be more action packed and hopefully, more enjoyable too. Till then, I hope you liked reading this chapter. Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
On a more important note, currentintissues.carrd.co is another carrd I saw someone posting and I thought I'd share this here; please check it out and do what you can to help!
