2 - First Hurdle Cleared

CHAPTER TWO

Exactly one week after the exam, the results came in the mail.

The letter was in a simple white envelope, stamped with a red seal that carried the symbol of U.A. High School. Without hesitation, Megumi ripped it open, eager (and nervous) to know if she had gotten into her dream school. All Might appeared in the form of a hologram, laughing as he always did.

And he told her the result. The Symbol of Peace himself told her that she had been accepted into U.A. and had even made it into the top ten rankings. Somehow. Then a couple of minutes later, someone knocked on the door and then rang the bell.

Megumi didn't even have to open the door to know that it was her cousin. As soon as she swung it open, Natsume tackled her into a hug, sending both of them tumbling to the ground.

"Gumi-gumi! I got in! I got in!" The white-haired boy excitedly announced, giving her a toothy grin. "I got into U.A!"

"Natsume, get off me, you idiot! At least warn me beforehand if you're gonna jump on me," Megumi pushed him away, sitting up on the floor. When she meet Natsume's eyes, she realised that he had an expectant look on his face. "Yes, I got in too!"

Natsume let out an excited cheer before hugging her again. Megumi laughed slightly as she hugged him back

"We have to celebrate!" Natsume said when he pulled away. "Let's go eat ice-cream now! Mom and Dad gave me some money. It'll be my treat."

"Well, if you're offering, then sure," Megumi replied, getting up from the floor. "Let me just grab my phone."

She retreated back into the living room where she had been sitting earlier, with enough nervous energy to bounce off walls. Spotting her phone on the centre table, she quickly strode over and grabbed it. She sent a quick text to her dad to tell him that she was stepping out with Natsume. No reply came, so she assumed he was busy with hero duties. But she knew the reply would come soon enough.

As she left the room, Megumi's eyes fell on the picture that was hung right above the television. It was a family portrait, taken almost fourteen years ago when she was just a baby. It was her being held in the arms of a mother she never got the chance to know. Her mom's wings were spread wide and her dad had a bright grin on his face. Miyuki and Kaito...her mom and dad...that was (or rather, had been) their family.

"I hope I can be a good hero like you, Mom," Megumi mumbled to herself. "I really hope so."

With that thought in mind, Megumi stepped out of the living room, walking down the hallway to where Natsume was waiting for her. It was finally starting; a hurdle had been crossed on their journey to be heroes.

APRIL

The month of April came quicker than she had expected and so it was finally the day Megumi and Natsume would be starting at U.A.

They had walked to the school together, just like they always had. Now, they were walking down the vast, grey corridor towards their class. Her white-haired cousin was the one talking, admiring the sights in front of them, while she just nodded along, giving random inputs from time to time.

Surprisingly enough, both of them had ended up in the same class. The usual practice was to assign family members to different classes, but the two cousins had found themselves part of 1-A. Megumi was thankful for that. Her cousin had always been better at making friends, and somehow, she hoped, that by staying with him, she wouldn't end up embarrassing herself.

They came to a stop in front of a massive door that stretched to the ceiling. Natsume sent her a reassuring smile. "Ready to go in?"

      "Yeah, let's go," Megumi replied.

Natsume pushed open the door and stepped inside. Taking a deep breath, Megumi followed him. The classroom was still half-empty but enough people were there. Once glance at those who were present told her that were a wide variety of quirks present, some easily identifiable and some that she didn't understand.

"Hey Natsume!" A loud voice suddenly called out. "I know you would pass too, bro!"

The owner of the voice was a boy with spiky red hair that was just a shade darker than Megumi's. He was standing with three others; a boy with black hair and strange elbows, another boy with spiky, electric blonde hair and the third person was a girl with pretty pink skin and dark pink hair. Her eyes were completely black, yet her irises were gold and stood out. Horns were also protruding from her head.

"Hey, Kirishima! Awesome to see you here," Natsume waved at him, grinning widely. Turning to look at Megumi, he said, "Come on, let's introduce ourselves to everybody."

Megumi walked behind her cousin as he went up to Kirishima, fist-pumping the other red head. Kirishima introduced Natsume to the three and she finally managed to learn their names; Sero, Kaminari and Mina. Then Natsume turned to her, beckoning her to come forward.

Megumi stepped forward, hoping the smile on her face wasn't too awkward.

"Everyone, this is my cousin, Megumi," Natsume introduced her with a grin, pushing her a little more forward.

"Hey," Megumi sent a small wave towards the three. "Nice to meet you all."

"You too!" Kirishima replied enthusiastically. "Your hair is almost as red as mine; that's awesome."

"Yup, red hair solidarity," Megumi said jokingly. But Kirishima laughed loudly and so did the other three. Megumi slowly felt herself relax. The fellow red-head reminded her of Natsume; both of them felt like people who put others at ease and make them feel comfortable. The other three, Mina, Sero and Kaminari felt like that too.

But she still felt a little awkward so she politely excused herself and walked away from the group, curling and uncurling her fingers. It was a nervous habit she had picked up from her father.

'Where do I sit?' Megumi thought, before spotting an empty space at the back of the class, right next to a boy with half-white half-red hair. As she walked up to the empty desk, the boy looked up and she found herself staring into intensely beautiful heterochromatic eyes, one grey and the other bright blue. Strangely, the left side of his face (with the blue eyes and red hair) was covered with a burn scar.

Realizing that she was staring too long, Megumi immediately looked away and quickly sat down at her desk. 'I was staring too long, wasn't I? I know I stared too long. Should I introduce myself now? Would that be awkward? I hope not.'

Before Megumi could make up her mind, a loud noise coming from the front of the class grabbed her attention. She looked ahead, propping her arms on the desk. Her eyes fell onto a blond-haired boy who was sneering at another boy wearing glasses. The other boy looked like he was from one of those rich private schools.

'Or are you wrong in your observation?' Megumi added as an afterthought.

"I'm from Soumei Private Academy," The bespectacled boy introduced himself, slashing his hand through the air. "I'm Tenya Iida."

"Somei, huh?" The blonde-haired boy sneered, legs propped on the top of his desk. "That damn elite school...you're worth killing then."

Iida gasped, a little too dramatically, placing a hand over his heart. "Worth killing? You are very bad. Are you sure you're in the right place?"

The blonde-haired boy scoffed. Before he could snap back, the door of the classroom opened. As though in sync, everyone turned around and looked in that direction. As soon as Megumi's eyes fell on the person at the door, they widened. Standing in the doorway was none other than the green-haired boy she had helped during the exam and the same boy that had destroyed the giant zero pointer robot.

The boy started blushing and judging by the look on his face, he was definitely not used to the attention that had suddenly fallen on him. Megumi understood that feeling; it was something that came attached with the fact that she was the daughter of the number 7 pro-hero.

When she looked back at Midoriya, a pretty brunette girl was talking to him and the poor guy looked like he was about to have a stroke. Megumi had almost gotten up to talk to him too, when the atmosphere of the class suddenly changed.

A tired voice echoed through the room, but Megumi couldn't see from where it came. After a short pause, a tall, sleepy-looking man with dark hair, stepped into the room (wait, was that a sleeping bag he was holding?). "I'm your teacher, Shota Aizawa. Nice to meet you."

Everyone in the class let out sounds of surprise and amazement. So did Megumi. "This is our teacher?" She mumbled under her breath. "I'm getting pretty strange vibes from him though."

Aizawa-sensei looked through his sleeping bag, before pulling out a gym uniform made in blue, red and white. "Wear these and come out to the field."

Megumi only had one thought in her mind. 'Okay, what are we about to do now? For some reason, I have a slightly bad feeling about this.'

Okay, I know Megumi and Todoroki didn't exactly talk in this chapter, but be rest assured, they will have a proper conversation soon enough. Though I think their first meeting was kinda cute; it was low-key inspired by how I met my own first crush in high school hehe. I was gonna keep the quirk assessment test in this chapter too, but it was becoming too long, so the next chapter is fully dedicated to that.
