18 - Some Hard Choices
Two days after the sports festival, class 1-A was fully rested up. It was a gloomy day, with torrential rains pouring down from the sky. Megumi was leaning against Tsuyu's desk as she and a few others talked about the post sports festival experience. Natsume, meanwhile, was half asleep at his desk, having stayed up too late watching his favorite anime.
"There's a difference after being aired on TV, huh?" Mina spoke with excitement. "I was stopped so many times on the way here."
Kirishima pointed at himself. "Me too!"
Megumi added with a half-smile, "And me also."
The interactions had certainly been very awkward and she had only managed to say a quiet 'thank you', while Natsume silently laughed in the background.
"People kept on staring at me," Hagakure said. "It was so embarrassing!"
"As for me," Sero looked like he regretted everything in life. "A little kid said to me don't mind."
Without even moving from her desk, Tsuyu plainly said, "Don't mind."
"Nice one," Megumi laughed with everyone as else, as Sero cried out in protest.
She wandered back to her desk, smiling at Todoroki as she sat down. The boy didn't smile back, but nodded his head, which was certainly an improvement on how he used to act before.
The classroom door suddenly opened and everyone quickly sat down on their seats. Natsume jolted himself awake, right as Aizawa-sensei entered the room.
He greeted them with his usual gruff voice. "Good morning."
"Good morning!" The class said together.
He walked over to the teacher's podium and leaned against. "Aizawa-sensei's bandages came off. I'm glad."
"That old lady's treatment was excessive," Aizawa-sensei answered. "Anyway, today's Hero Informatics Period is a little special."
'Special? What does he mean by special?' Megumi could feel herself tense up. There couldn't be another test, right? She was not prepared for anything and after the sports festival, she was not sure if she was ready to do some big thing yet. Others in the class mirrored her nervous expression. They gritted their teeth in anticipation, waiting for their teacher to reveal just what they would be doing.
"Code names," Aizawa-sensei said. "You'll be coming up with your hero names."
The class started cheering together, till Aizawa-sensei's eyes glowed bright red and his hair started hovering in the air. Everyone was immediately silent.
"It's because this is related to the hero draft picks," He continued. "The draft starts its proceedings in two to three years, after you've gained experience and are regarded as work-ready by pros. In other words, the calls that the first year students received shows the interest they have in your future. It's possible for the offers to be rescinded if their interest in you dies down before graduation."
"The calls we receive will become our own hurdle, right?" Hagakure spoke out in the front.
"Right," Aizawa-sensei agreed. "And these are the results of the offers that you received."
He pressed a button in his pocket and numbers started to appear on the screen.
Todoroki: 4123
Bakugo: 3556
Tokoyami: 360
Okumura: 310
Iida: 288
Kaminari: 272
Yaoyoruzu: 108
Kirishima: 68
Uraraka: 20
Sero: 14
"Usually it's more distributed, but these two drew attention this year," Aizawa-sensei pointed towards the top two, Todoroki and Bakugo. Megumi could only share in shock at the number of offers; she was pleasantly surprised with her own, but the amount she had gotten was not even close to Todoroki and Bakugo.
But it was surprising to see Todoroki and Bakugo had essentially switched places when it came to the number of offers. Megumi was about to voice this out loud, when Jiro spoke the exact same thing. And then she heard Sero's quiet whisper.
"They were probably scared of him since he had to be restrained on the podium."
Megumi snickered lightly. That could certainly be expected. Bakugo in the meanwhile, angrily yelled out his answer, "Pros shouldn't be getting scared!"
"You're amazing, Todoroki-kun," Yaoyoruzu spoke with a smile from Todoroki's other side.
"Yeah, you really are," Megumi nodded in agreement.
"I'm sure it's all because of my dad," Todoroki said, in a straightforward manner.
"I'm sure that's..." Megumi almost started to say, but realized the same could technically apply to her too. She had gotten a pretty good amount of offers, but now she was wondering; how many of these were because of her dad and how many of these were because of her skills?
"With that in mind," Aizawa-sensei continued speaking. "Regardless of whether you've received offers or not, you'll be in an internship with the pro-heroes."
"Internship?" Midoriya spoke out.
"Yes," Aizawa-sensei said. "At USJ, you all have already experienced a fight against the villains, but by actually working alongside a pro, you can receive a more productive training."
"That's what the hero name is for?" Sato spoke with a grin.
"I think so," Natsume added, also grinning.
"I'm looking forward to it too!" Uraraka said, smiling brightly.
"The hero names are temporary," Aizawa-sensei said. "But if you're not serious about it..."
The door suddenly slid open, and a very familiar voice spoke loudly. "Then you'll be sent to hell!"
"The name you pick now," Midnight said as she entered the classroom. "May be what the world ends up calling you."
"Midnight!" The class exclaimed
"Well that's how it is," Aizawa added. "Midnight will evaluate your choice of names. I can't do those things. Choosing a name that represents your future projects your desired image and brings your closer to it. Because names are capable of reflecting one's true character. Like All Might."
Small whiteboards started being passed down, from the front towards the back. The second she got hers, Megumi got to writing. She had decided her hero name long ago, but never shared it for the fear that people would make fun of her for it. It was really just an utterly simple name, inspired by what her actual quirk was.
She had wanted to keep a name, similar to her mother who had passed away long ago. She had also wanted to do something like her dad's name, which was utterly badass and cool. But in the end, she had just gone with the name that represented her quirk best.
White Flame Hero, Aura. That's who Megumi wanted to be called.
Fifteen minutes passed, and the time to decide names was called to an end by Midnight.
"Whoever's ready can present it!" She said.
Whispers broke out at the thought of presenting their names, but Aoyama had already begun walking towards the podium. With dramatic flair, he flipped over his board, "Shining hero: I can not stop twinkling."
'A whole freaking sentence?!" Megumi felt shocked. What a...well, the name was certainly something.
"You should remove the I and shorten the can not to can't," Midnight advised as she made the changes on his whiteboard.
"I see, Mademoiselle," Aoyama nodded calmly.
'I can't believe that's allowed,' Megumi thought, covering her mouth to hide her laugh.
"Then I'm next!" Mina practically ran to the podium in excitement and slammed her whiteboard on it. "My hero name is Alien Queen."
"From the sequel?! Do you want to be that thing with acidic blood?" Midnight immediately said. "Stop that!"
Dejected, Mina walked back to her desk. Then, Tsuyu raised her hand. "Can I go next?" After getting permission from Midnight, the girl walked to the podium.
"I decided on this name back in elementary school," Tsuyu turned around her whiteboard. "Rainy Season Hero, Froppy."
"How cute!" Midnight squealed. "It makes you sound approachable!"
Some of the class started to cheer for her, Megumi included. She was cheering in relief though, glad that at least one person had a normal name.
Then Kirishima went next. "Then me too! Sturdy Hero, Red Riot!"
"This is a homage to the Chivalrous Hero, Crimson Riot, right?" Midnight spoke.
"Right," Kirishima spoke with a smile. "I know he's from back in the day, but he's the kind of hero I want to be."
"Shouldering the name you admire will come with much pressure," Midnight said.
"I'm prepared for that," And honestly, Kirishima certainly sounded prepared.
Then it was Natsume's turn. He confidently walked over to the podium and flipped over his whiteboard. He pushed back his bangs with one hand, "Determined Hero, Byakko."
"Good one!" Midnight gave him a thumbs up. "Names from mythology can make you sound very interesting."
Natsume had a bright smile on his face as he walked back to his desk. Just as he was about to sit down, his eyes met Megumi's, who looked at him with a smirk and slightly tilted her head in acknowledgement. He did the same and then sat down.
Others went on to present their name. After Yaoyoruzu finished presenting her name, Megumi went next. Hoping her legs weren't shaking, she walked to the podium. With a deep breath, she flipped over her whiteboard. "White Flame Hero, Aura."
"Good, good! Your name gives off calming vibes!" Midnight spoke.
Megumi sighed in relief, thanked her teacher and wandered back to her desk. "Thank god, that worked out," she mumbled to herself.
Others went on after her and the variety of names didn't stop. There were names as simple as Todoroki choosing his first name as his hero name, or names as fancy as Tokoyami choosing Tsukuyomi. And then there were names like Bakugo's King Explosion Murder that were instant rejections.
Iida went next, also picking his first name as his hero name. Then it was Midoriya's turn.
The green haired boy started walked towards the podium and flipped his whiteboard. Megumi's eyes widened slightly seeing the name written on it. Others noticed it too and voiced their concerns out loud.
"Yeah," Midoriya seemed to agree. "I never liked this name till now. But someone changed the meaning of this name and that had a big impact on me and it made me happy. This is my hero name."
The word Deku, was clearly visible on the whiteboard.
After Bakugo's next choice was rejected, it was time to see their offers and pick where they would go for an internship.
"Now that everyone has their hero names," Aizawa-sensei, who was out of his yellow sleeping bag, said. "Let's about the internship. It's one week long. As for where it is, those who received offers will be given a separate list so you can choose from there. Those who didn't receive offers wi choose from the list of forty agencies we've prepared that have agreed to take students in. Location and special forte for each one differs."
As the bell rang, the lists were passed out. Since Megumi had gotten many offers, she had expected to get a thick stack of papers, but when she glanced to her right, Todoroki's stack was three times the size of hers. 'Damn,' she thought. 'That's a lot.'
"Turn it in by the end of the week," Aizawa-sensei said. "Choose carefully. Class dismissed." And then he and Midnight left the classroom, sliding the door shut as they walked out.
Megumi quickly flipped through the pages. There were so many hero names she recognized; so many of them were so famous that it was getting harder to keep her mouth from falling open in shock. She turned back to the first page and started scanning the names. Then one name caught her eye.
Endeavor Hero Agency
'Holy shit, what?! Endeavor made an offer?! But why?' Megumi thought in shock. Of all the heroes, she was certainly not expecting to get an offer from the number 2 hero himself. Her dad and his number 7 rank didn't matter to her (she wasn't gonna go to the Red Flame Agency anyway). Besides her dad, Endeavor was the one hero that had a powerful fire based quirk.
Others were now in groups, discussing where they would go for their internships. Megumi tapped her desk with her fingers. There were other great offers too. She was definitely being spoiled with choices and now was being forced to pick between many great ones. It was not fun.
"Oi, Megumi!" Natsume suddenly walked up to her desk. "Where are you going?"
"I don't know," Megumi answered, as she pulled out a pen to write out her choices. "There's too many to pick from. Did you decide already?"
"Yup," He nodded. "It wasn't too hard. I'll hand these over before we leave." He showed her his sheet with all his choices clearly written. The first choice was the Stellar Hero, Astra. One of the other choices was Red Flame, her dad. And the other was some forest based hero.
"Astra's pretty good," Megumi said. Moments like this, she was really jealous of her cousin's ability to decide things quickly. "Though I don't know if she's exactly a good fit."
"That's the fun part," Natsume said with a bright grin. "You keep saying it; we need to expand our horizons, step beyond our parents' shadow. That's what I'm doing. Now show me that massive stack of offers you have."
She handed the sheet to him.
"Damn, you've got so many good heroes putting in an offer," Natsume said. "I guess why you would be confused."
"I have a choice in mind though," Megumi spoke. "Endeavor made an offer."
Next to her, she heard Todoroki bristle, but ignored it. "He's my top choice. But I don't know...there's other great heroes too."
"Dude! It's the number 2 hero!" Natsume spoke with wide eyes. "You should go there, for sure! You'd be a great fit! You're pretty strong and I'm sure, just as strong as your mom used to be. Besides, you could just pick up some great tips and gain good experience going there."
"You're right about that," Megumi replied. "At least I won't have Dad hovering over me, like he'll do for you if you end up going to his agency."
"He would work me to the bone though," Natsume said. "You know how strict he is when it comes to the matter of heroics. He definetly wouldn't let me do risky things right now. So, Astra it is for me. And you," he pointed a finger towards Megumi. "You should go to Endeavor."
"Hmm, I guess so," Megumi answered. There was no other reason to go there, except it would be a good place to learn about how to be at the top. At least this way, her mom's rank 3 seemed achievable.
So her choice was made.
*
The day finally come to an end.
Megumi hummed to herself as she walked down the stairs. Today, she would be going back alone since Natsume had made plans to hang out with Kirishima, Sero and Kaminari after school. Supposedly, even Bakugo was going to be there. He had practically run off after they submitted their forms in the staffroom, very excited for this hangout.
Well, at least Megumi could listen to music and read a book in peace. Just as she was about to take the last step off the stairs, she heard a voice call her name.
"Okumura."
She spun around, staring right at Todoroki.
"Oh Todoroki, hi!" She smiled at him, though she wondered why he was here, calling out her name.
"You..." He spoke with hesitation as he stepped closer to her, till he was right next to her. "You got an offer from Endeavor..."
The way Todoroki spoke; it was like hearing a question than a sentence. But Megumi nodded. "Yeah, I did. I don't know why though. But he's the number 2 hero and that counts for something, right? So I picked his agency. Why do you ask?"
"My father chose you, probably because he sees you as equal strength to me after our match at the sports festival," Todoroki said, speaking in a manner that made it seem like he was talking to himself. "He sees your fire as powerful enough."
"I guess that's good," Megumi felt utterly confused by Todoroki's statement. "Though you still defeated me. But even then, you didn't answer my other question. Why are you asking me this?"
"There is no special reason," Todoroki replied, the expression in his dual colored eyes unreadable. "Other than that I will also be doing my internship at his agency."
Now, that was certainly surprising. "Oh. We'll be working together, then?" Megumi said. "That sounds like it would nice. I mean, given our quirks are also fire based."
"Right, yes," Todoroki answered, stiffly.
"Well then, I'm looking forward to working with you," Megumi stated with a smile. "Now I'm gonna go, so see you soon. Bye Todoroki! Hope you have a good day!"
She turned around and slowly walked away. This would be interesting. Working with Endeavor, working with Todoroki...it was bound to be an adventure in itself.
Only later, Megumi would realise, how true her words would be. But not in the ways she would expect.
