Coming Back
The next morning, we headed for home. When we got to the long straight road, Mr. Fletcher pulled over. We were staring at each other.
"A promise is a promise."
I smiled as we got out of the car and switched seats. I was told to step on the accelerator. I started driving down the road.
"Don't go too fast or too slow."
"Yes sir."
I drove the car all the way home. Mrs. Fletcher saw us pull in. She gasped when she saw me get out of the driver's seat.
"What in God's name!?"
"Mr. Fletcher taught me how to drive."
"Are you serious!?"
Mr. Fletcher got out of the car.
"Yes, we're dead serious. On the way to Louisiana, she asked me if I could teach her. I let her drive from the highway to here on the way back. She actually did a good job," Mr. Fletcher said.
Mrs. Fletcher sighed with relief. Mr. Fletcher looked at his pocket watch.
"Evening work starts in a few minutes. You better get going."
"Yes sir."
*Mr. Fletcher's POV*
Sally left as I gave my wife a kiss.
"How'd it go yesterday?"
"It was great. She has a wonderful family."
"I'm glad it went ok. Let's sit on the porch. Tell me what else you two did."
We sat on the porch.
"We went out to eat, that bill will come out of her pay whether she does extra work or not. And, I told her about us, how we met on Titanic. You still remember don't you?"
"Of course I do, when it sank, we lost our parents. We met on the day we boarded. You were fifteen and I was fourteen. We've been inseparable ever since. We wouldn't let anybody, not even an orphanage separate us."
"We lost our fathers because women and children had to go first on the lifeboats. Our mothers unfortunately froze to death."
I took her hand and kissed it.
