#16: The New Family

Saturday couldn't have rolled by fast enough. It was a sunny day, with the cold autumn breeze blowing just right. Haneul was holding the straps of her backpack happily, waiting for Keishin infront of the school gates. Kei was still inside, taking class along with the others. He was in an advanced class as well, class 4, but it wasn't as advanced as class 5, so he and Tadashi were still stuck inside until 2pm. The others were in their normal classes until school was out.

Yachi was waiting along with her, to not leave her alone. "You must be so excited," the blonde smiled, gaining a nod from the other manager. "It was so nice of him to take me in," Haneul said, never erasing the smile on her face. Keishin then pulled up on his truck, smiling at the girls. "Sorry I'm late, we actually had costumers for once," he said, scratching the back of his head. "See you later, Yachi-chan!" Haneul waved, and the blonde girl waved back. "See you! Have fun!"

Haneul got in the truck, smiling at Keishin. The male ruffled her hair, and drove off to Kei's house. "Aight, we're going to pick up your stuff, head home, put up your things, and later we'll go to Gramp's, okay?" The brunette nodded, eager to see the home she'll be living in.

And so, they arrived at Kei's house. Hiyori opened the door, and helped them put the things from Akiteru's room to the back of the truck. After thanking her for letting her stay and all the things she'd done for her, Haneul left with Keishin to their new house.

It was a traditional Japanese home that belonged to Keishin's dad before he got married and moved to the house in the Sakanoshita store. He had spent a week fixing and cleaning it, just so they could move in together soon. "It's a bit small, and it doesn't have a lot of room, but I hope you like it," Keishin said, scratching the back of his head nervously.

Meanwhile, Haneul looked like a little kid just running around the house and rolling on the floor. "It's so nice!" She exclaimed, laying face up on the floor in the middle of the room. Luckily, Keishin got about half of that on camera. "Haneul, open that screen," Keishin said, still taking the video.

The young girl happily got on her feet and opened the screen gently, revealing a spacious backyard with a view to the town. The house was situated atop a hill, and it had the best view of the town by far. While Haneul was distracted, Keishin took a bunch of pictures to show his mom, Hiyori and Takeda later.

When she turned back, she smiled widely at him, her eyes completely shut from her cheeks covering them. "What do you think?" Keishin asked, walking towards her and ruffling her hair. "I'm never getting used to this," she said, smiling up at him. He turned his head questioningly. "Huh? Why?"

"It's a good thing," she started with a chuckle, "I've only lived in apartments before, so all of this is really new. Thank you, Keishin-san." "Just Keishin is fine. Come on, let's unpack."

And so the duo spent their early afternoon putting things into place. The house had four rooms: the living room and kitchen , the bathroom, the laundry room and the bedroom, so they slept in the same room. Haneul hung up all her clothes in the closet aside the blond's, while he tinkered with the electronics.

Once it was around five, they were done with everything. Haneul got washed and dressed for the family event in old coach Ukai's home, dressing in a black plaid skirt and a knitted white shirt, complemented by a black side purse she loved. The tall blond wore a loose button up shirt with a pair of skinny jeans.

"Should I wear my earrings?" He asked out loud, looking at his reflection in the mirror in their vanity. "You should. They look good on you..." responded Haneul, whom was busy tidying up her hair. Keishin grinned, knowing she said it subconsciously, since she didn't even look up at him. He decided to wear them anyways, I mean, his aunt was gonna say he was the family deception anyways.

After they were done getting ready, Keishin drove to his grandfather's home. He could see Haneul was visibly nervous: she fidgeted with her fingers, moving her leg up and down rapidly, and biting on her lip. "Hey, kiddo, you okay?" Keishin asked, leaning back on his seat a little. "I don't know... W-what if your family doesn't l-like me?" Keishin stopped at a red light, turning to look at her with a serious look.

"Haneul, it doesn't matter if they like you. You're staying with me now, and that's all that matters. Besides, they don't like me much either." The blond grinned and sped up at the green light, with Haneul seemingly a little less nervous.

When they finally pulled up at the house, Haneul noticed that there were a bunch of cars parked outside, meaning that mostly everyone was there already. They got off the truck and walked up to the door, where Keishin knocked. Haneul stood behind him, holding on to the hem of the man's shirt with one hand, and a present on the other.

A black haired lady with a mole on her eye opened the door with a smile, but once she saw Keishin, her smile turned into a scowl. "Oh, Keishin, honey, it's you. And I thought it was going to be a beautiful day," the lady said, leaving the door open for them. "Yeah it's good to see you too, aunt Hana." The woman hadn't seen Haneul standing behind him yet.

The duo entered the house, and Keishin led them to where they all were, in a very spacious living room, with the patio doors open to reveal small children running around. "Darling, you made it! How was the move?" Tohoku, Keishin's mom, asked, happily waving at him. Haneul then stepped from behind Keishin shyly, wanting to see who else was there.

A brown haired man then exclaimed, "I knew you did something in high school!" Haneul was confused, but didn't say anything. "Nice to see you too, Haru," Keishin said, clearly annoyed. "Is she yours?" Asked a brown haired girl, who was sitting aside the guy from before. Keishin nodded, looking at Haneul. "Introduce yourself, it's alright," he said, and Haneul fully stepped aside him, bowing at the large family.

"I'm Haneul. It's nice to meet all of you," she said shyly. "Who's is she? And from when? First year? Second year?" Haru asked, walking towards Haneul and looking at her. "Oh, give it a rest, Haru! It doesn't matter from when, or with who. It only matters that it happened," Hana said, crossing her arms, "See, Tohoku, my children never did anything like this."

Haneul was ultimately confused, but with what Hana said, she managed to connect the dots. "I-it seems that you have a misunderstanding. Keishin adopted me," she announced, gaining stares from everyone. Keishin explained to his family members about Haneul, and introduced them to her.

Hana was his oldest aunt, Minami followed, then his dad, Toshinori, then his uncle Kazuto. Haru was his cousin, son of Minami, and his age. Hana's children consisted of a video game addict named Itachi and a cosmetologist named Dia, who had three children. Minami's children were all mostly girls, except for Haru, but only one of them was there, named Sakura, and was around Keishin's age. Then finally there was Kazuto, who's child was Haru and a girl named Ari.

"Well, doll, I feel bad for you. Keishin can hardly take care of himself, much less is he going to be able to provide for you. He didn't think this through," Hana said when she was meeting her. When Haneul was meeting Ari, there was a yell, and suddenly Keishin was flipped and thrown out the porch and onto the backyard. Haneul turned when an old man started yelling at him. "You weakling! That's what you get for not coaching your team right!"

When he noticed her staring, he stared back. Haneul gently shook in place, until Toshinori (Keishin's dad), said, "Haneul, darling, that's my dad, Ikkei. Mind him, he has a thing for throwing Keishin around." Haneul then bowed at him, introducing herself. Ikkei stared at her for a few seconds, then smiled.

"Are you the good luck charm I've been hearing so much about lately?" He asked with a grin, putting his hands on his hips. Haneul blushed, knowing well that Hinata had been training with him for a while now, and had probably spoken about her. "You're a Libero, aren't ya, kid? What's your name?" By now, everyone was looking at her and Ikkei.

"My name is Haneul, and Keishin adopted me... I-I'm a Libero, #13, and a manager too," she replied, then she remembered the small present she held on her hand. "Happy birthday. This is for you, Ikkei-san," she said, holding the small gift up to him. He unwrapped it to find his favorite chocolate. "Thank you! And you can call me Grandpapa."

After everything was over, Haneul had made friends with the small children, as well with the others. Hana didn't like her much, but Keishin told her not to worry about it. "Bye, Grandpapa! Bye gramma, grandpa!" Haneul waved from her seat in the car. "Bye dearie," Tohoku said with a smile, and Keishin then pulled out of the drive way and on the way to their home.

Haneul fell asleep on the way, but Keishin found it so cute, that he didn't want to wake her up. When he parked the car, he went inside the house and set the futon, then went back outside and carried her out of the car. She was surprisingly light, something that wasn't expected from a volleyball player, but decided he'd talk to her about it tomorrow.

He laid her down in the futon and took off her shoes. He then took off her jewelry gently, trying his best not to wake her up. When he was finished, he tucked her in, going to get ready for bed himself. Maybe Hana was right. Would he be able to become a decent parental figure for her? He tried to push the thought to the back of his mind, and went to sleep aside her.
