#12: Grades and Finals

"I'm sorry for worrying all of you," Haneul bowed at the team. It was time for morning practice, but since she couldn't do sports for a few days, she was going to help Kiyoko from the sidelines. Keishin had told everyone what had went down in her uncle's apartment so they wouldn't freak out when they saw her all bandaged up.

"You don't have to apologize, Haneul-chan," Daichi said, followed by Hinata, "Yeah! It wasn't your fault!" Afterwards, they had a group hug, then went on to continue practicing. "Haneul-chan," Kiyoko called, wanting to speak to her. "Yes, Kiyoko-senpai?" "I need your help with something."

Kei and Tadashi walked her to class, causing her classmates to look at her. "E-etto, I won't be joining you for lunch. I promised Kiyoko to help her with something," Haneul said, gaining a nod from the duo. "Fine. See you," Kei said, walking away. "W-wait up, Tsuki!" Tadashi turned to her before running behind his friend, "See you later, Ha-chan."

The day went on pretty normal, and by lunch, she was handing out flyers with Kiyoko. "Remember to talk to them," Kiyoko reminded, and Haneul froze. She was shy, and public speaking was something she was obviously not good at, but all to help her senpai be at ease.

Kiyoko noticed her discomfort after the second person she had to speak with, and told her that they'd both speak to one person together. This, of course, caused them to gain attention in the halls, specially in the first year halls.

"Kiyoko-senpai? Ha-chan?" The two girls looked down the hall to see who had called them, only to see Hinata standing at his classroom door with his friends. The two girls smiled at him and walked towards him. "Shoyo-kun, hi," Haneul smiled, and Kiyoko greeted him too. "What are you two doing here?" Hinata asked, blushing a bit by the sudden attention he grabbed from his classmates. "Hinata, I was wondering if you happen to know any first years that haven't joined any clubs yet," Kiyoko said, and the boy looked interestingly at the duo.

It was then time for afternoon practice, and Haneul was helping set the gym while Kiyoko went to help the team with their uphill dashes at Heartbreak Hill. Keishin stood infront of the white board, planning out some strategies they could practice later. With a deep breath, Haneul walked toward the coach with a few balls in her arms. "Keishin-san, I haven't thanked you for helping me," Haneul started, bowing at him, "If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't probably be-" "It's no problem, kiddo," he said, ruffling her hair and smiling.

"If I'm being honest, you worry me sometimes. If you need someone to talk to, I'm here," Keishin finished with a grin. Haneul smiled and nodded at him, who asked for her help. "I need your keen eye for this. How about this?" Keishin then proceeded to explain some strategies and Haneul gave him positive criticism on them.

After a few minutes, the team walked inside with Takeda. "You took a while," Keishin said, hands in his pockets. "Yeah. Hinata and Kageyama got lost and ended up all the way in Shiratorizawa," Sugawara said, looking at the two first years. Afterwards, Takeda called everyone to meet up, and so they sat in a circle around their sensei.

"Alright, I'll be passing out the confirmation papers for the trip to Tokyo so your guardians can sign. It'll be tricky, since exams are also next month. You do know that, don't you?" Haneul nodded automatically at what her sensei was saying, until she noticed everyone was staring at Kageyama, Tanaka and Hinata, whom were a bit frozen. "Don't you...?" The quartet turned their heads at the question.

"I think you can guess what I'm about to say... If you fail even one class, it'll be extra classes on weekends, and possibly over the summer too." And with that, the room turned into chaos. Nishinoya and Tanaka tried to run away, but Ennoshita stopped them. Haneul stood to the side with Kei, Tadashi and Kiyoko, watching the events unfold.

"Do I really look to you like the kind of guy who got good grades?" Haneul laughed a bit at Hinata's reaction to the coach's words. "We are doing this, all of us. So let's go to Tokyo!" Daichi said, pumping his fist in the air. They then got to practice some strategies, but it was obvious the troublesome quartet couldn't concentrate, so they called it a day early.

In the club room, Daichi asked Haneul to help give them some advice on getting good grades. The brunette stood infront of the four of them, whom knelt on the floor looking at her. The others felt a bit uncomfortable changing infront of her, but since she said she didn't mind, they went on with it anyways and let her inside.

"Listen, there's only one rule you have to follow: Never fall asleep in class," Haneul said, causing them to flinch. "They have to be told that?" Asahi asked, to which Daichi shrugged. "Don't pull any all nighters, they'll make you slow in class and on the court. Get eight hours of sleep every night," Haneul finished, to which the four of them were left unsettled.

"Let's go, Haneul," Kei called, opening the club room door with Tadashi. "Okay," Haneul smiled, grabbing her bag and following them out. "Thanks, Haneul-chan," Daichi said, and she smiled and waved, "No problem!" The first year trio walked out of the school together, Tadashi in his track gear to keep on practicing his serves.

"So it turns out Kageyama gets bad grades too? You'd think he'd be a little smarter than the rest of them. Hinata doesn't really surprise me though," Tadashi said. "His brain's just like a volleyball: nothing but empty space inside," Kei added. Haneul chuckled. "Yeah, I kinda figured Tobio-kun out a while ago, when he said he didn't pass the Shiratorizawa exam. It was pretty basic-"

"TSUKISHIMA!" The trio turned around to see Hinata holding his bike aside Kageyama. "Sorry, but... CAN YOU HELP US STUDY?!... Please?" Hinata exclaimed, bowing his head a little while Kageyama just awkwardly stood to the side. "Me? No thank you," Kei rapidly answered. "Just a couple of minutes a day, or at least give me a couple of pointers here and there..."

Tadashi turned to Kei, "Couldn't you spare a couple minutes before or after practice?" "Yeah, give them a chance, Kei-kun. They came over here to ask you," Haneul said, tugging slightlyat his dress shirt sleeve. "Don't you think it's kind of unfair of you to make the little guy do all the groveling, Kageyama? I want to hear it from you." Kei put his hands to his waist and smirked.

Haneul smiled slightly in pity for Kageyama, along with Tadashi. She stood and watched as Hinata urged him to do as the tall blond instructed, causing him to yell and bow harshly. Because of the loud noise, Keishin abruptly opened the door of his store and yelled at the group of first years, "What's all the racket?! Keep it down!" They all bowed at him and apologized, "Sorry coach!" "I didn't do anything," Kei shrugged, causing Keishin to glare at him mysteriously, but it may had been because he was holding hands with Haneul.

The next day, during morning break, Hinata gives Haneul a list he prepared of first years who hadn't joined any clubs yet, so the brunette thanked him and went to give the list to Kiyoko. On her way back to her classroom, the small girl bumped into Nishinoya and Ennoshita. "Sorry, Yuu-senpai, Chikara-senpai," she apologized, bowing. By now, all second year bystanders were looking at the three of them. "It's alright!" Ennoshita smiled.

Suddenly, Nishinoya's eyes lit up. "Haneul-chan! Can you tutor me, Tanaka and the others in English this weekend? I've heard you speak it before and you're in a college prep class, right?" After thinking about it for a while, she said, "I guess it's fine. I'm a native speaker, so it'll be easy for me to teach you." Nishinoya then said he'd text her the address later, and she went on her way.

Later in the club room, Kei and Yamaguchi are tutoring Hinata and Kageyama while she tutors Tanaka. Haneul gets a little offended when Kageyama said, "I don't need to know no English! Japanese people don't need to know it either! We speak Japanese!" Daichi reprimanded him and said that what he said was offensive.

The next day, it was Sunday, and Haneul was sitting with the other second years in Tanaka's room. After Ennoshita tried to teach Nishinoya how to properly answer literature questions, Haneul offered to explain it to him in an easier way, when a female voice interrupted them. "Are you actually studying?! You sick or something?" Haneul turned to see Saeko, Tanaka's sister, whom Nishinoya bowed to. "Hey Yuu! Seems like you're staying cool!" "Thanks! I try!" Nishinoya smiled. "Erm, sorry for, uh, intruding..." Ennoshita stuttered. "You're fine, Chikara. Oh? Who's this?"

The blonde looked at Haneul, who bowed slightly at the older female. "My name is Kazama Haneul, I'm a first year. Sorry for intruding," she blushed, trying her best not to stutter out of nervousness. Haneul thought Saeko was really pretty. "First year? Are these guys tutoring you? Because Ryuu isn't qualified-" "Shut up! She's tutoring us in English," Tanaka said, and Haneul silently shuffled towards Kinoshita while the siblings argued with each other until Saeko left.

"What does your sister practice?" Asked Narita. "Taiko drums. She's putting up a team for the next festival." "Woah. She's really pretty too..." Haneul said, gaining a muffled 'Thank you!' from Saeko, a few rooms down, causing her to blush. Haneul then began to teach the second years that to save up time on their tests, they could read all the questions first and then read, so if they found an answer, they could jot it down rapidly.

"Everyone, we'd like you to meet our potential new manager," Haneul said, entering the gym and gaining everyone's attention. Kiyoko walked inside after her, along with a short, blonde girl. "U-um, my name is Yachi Hitoka!" Haneul smiled as she freaked out about the other members, reminding her of how she used to be so timid around them.

"This is really great news! Now you've got another manager for next year," Asahi said, turning to Hinata. "Well, it's not set in stone. I asked her today at the very last minute, so she's just dropping by on her way to do her committee work, but she wanted to come meet you all," Kiyoko explained, and Yachi bowed. "It's very nice to meet you." Everyone bowed at once and greeted her loudly, and Haneul told them to take it easy because they were scaring her. Soon after, Yachi left the gym.

"Kiyoko, I had no idea you were out looking for a manager for next year," Daichi said, smiling at her. "Well, I didn't feel like all the searching I did back in spring was enough, and I know Haneul can't handle all the club activities and practice at the same time, so we searched together." The whole team then burst into tears at her words, with Haneul laughing a little.

When Haneul gets home with Kei, Hiyori welcomes them and urges Haneul to the dining table, where she had set some papers. Haneul knew what was going to happen now, and so did Kei, so he stood at the hallway and listened on their conversation. "After some research, we've concluded that the nearest foster family is in Fukishima, two and a half hours away. They've taken in two children, both are still toddlers, but I reached out to them and they said they'd be happy to accept you as well. That is, if you want to stay in Japan. I haven't looked in Korea or America, but I can of you want me to."

Haneul looked down at her hands, which sat over the table. She didn't really want to leave Japan. She loved it there, but it was hard thinking she'd have to leave Karasuno and Miaygi, as well and Kei, Tadashi and everyone else. However, having them close was better than having them farther away, right? Before Haneul could answer, Hiyori kept on talking.

"There is another option. Keishin Ukai personally asked if he could adopt you, and if you choose to stay with him, I can get everything sorted out." Haneul looked up at Hiyori, who was smiling widely at the young girl. "I take it you'll be staying with Ukai-san, yes?" Haneul stood from her seat, saying, "Yes, please! If I can stay with Keishin-san, I'll do anything!"

After a few minutes, Haneul burst out the doors of the Tsukishima household, bearing her uniform still, and dashed to the store, where Keishin was just closing up. Naturally, Kei ran behind her, incase she got fatigued or anything bad happened to her. "Haneul, what are you doing here this late-" Keishin was interrupted when Haneul hugged with, tears in the corners of her eyes. "Thank you! Thank you so much!"

The tall male knew what she was thanking him for, and hugged her back, patting her head. Haneul held his sweatshirt in her fists, not wanting to let go of him. It took a lot of persuading from Kei and Keishin so Haneul could let go of him.

"Hm? Help in English?" Haneul and Yachi were just chatting when Hinata and Kageyama walked in their class. It had turned out that the two girls were in the same class, and were just getting to know each other. "Yeah! We don't understand this so much... And well, since you both are in the college prep courses, we thought you could help us," Hinata smiled.

And so, Haneul started to tutor Kageyama while Yachi tutored Hinata. "I understand!" Kageyama suddenly exclaimed when Haneul explained the subject to him. After the two of them left, Yachi said, "I feel like I've been left under direct sunlight for too long..." Haneul chuckled, "That's Hinata's personality for you."

Afterwards during practice, Yachi was very surprised when Haneul showed up wearing her signature black shorts, but with an orange cropped sweatshirt. "Y-you play too?!" "Yup! I'm a Libero, so being tiny doesn't matter," Haneul said, since she was a bit smaller than Yachi. "I was taking a medical leave because of... Well, something happened. But I'm here now! Oh! And if you have any questions, feel free to ask me or Kiyoko-senpai," Haneul smiled at Yachi, leaving her to warm up with the boys.

After practice, Haneul talked with Yachi as she waited for Kei and Tadashi to finish changing, but overhear Takeda and Keishin talking about how the club had low funds. Haneul peaked her head inside the gym, standing on the last step on the stairs. "If we're low on funds, how about doing a bake sale... Or something?" The grown ups looked at the blushing girl, and Takeda said, "Well, it's not a bad idea. But, we do need to buy the things for a bake sale..." "Oh, you can leave that to me. I can bake cookies and sell them tomorrow."

After talking it over with Kiyoko and Daichi, the bake sale was a go. Keishin "donated" the ingredients from his store, and Kei helped her bake cookies until late.

The following day, she sets up the table with help from Takeda and Daichi. Kiyoko and Yachi help sell the cookies, and they all get sold out soon. When it's time for the practice match, she tells Kiyoko and Yachi to go change and set up the gym while she cleans up. Once done, the opposing team gets there on their bus, so Haneul goes to greet them. At hand, she had a basket of cookies she specially made for the teams, so she looked pretty cute carrying it around.

The opposing team was called Ohgi West, and Haneul directed them towards the gym. Afterwards, she went up to change in the club room, coming down in her Karasuno Volleyball uniform, amazing the other team, and getting complimented by Yachi.

"Come, let's line up," Haneul says, followed by Yachi and Kiyoko. They then start to warm up, and Yachi sees Asahi and Kei approach Haneul. "Um, Haneul-chan, can you adjust my headband?" Asahi asked, crouching so she could do so. Haneul smiled at the giant ace, taking two Bobby pins from her own hair and securing his headband. "There you go," she said, and Asahi smiled at her.

"Haneul, can you tighten my glasses?" Kei asked, holding up his glasses and the screwdriver from the repair kit. She took both items in hand, and after a few seconds, she handed them back. "Good as new." "Thanks," Kei patted her head, walking off to put the screwdriver back. "Ha-chan!! Can you help me?!" Tanaka exclaimed. When Haneul saw him, she let out a laugh. Apparently Nishinoya tied his laces together and made him fall. "On it!"

"Oh, I get it. Kazama-chan manages the most physical aspects of the team while you do the more tactical ones, right, Shimizu-senpai?" Haneul heard Yachi asked, causing her to chuckle. "Well, that's a good way to put it..."

The day of the test results finally came by, and Daichi made the boys sit in the club room to reveal their scores to Haneul and Yachi, in front of everyone. Yachi and Hinata were the first two to suffer, since she only tutored him. Hinata got a 21 on his English test, because all of his questions were off by one. Then, it was Nishinoya and Tanaka's turns. They turned in their enveloped tests, and Haneul smiled. "Yuu-senpai's lowest score was a 45, while Ryuu-senpai's was a 42. Barely, but you passed," Haneul said, being immediately hugged by the duo.

"Witness the true power," Nishinoya said, "Of the second years!" Tanaka finished. "You two barely passed over the 40 point mark. Now, let's see Kageyama's," Sugawara said, and everyone turned to look. The ravenette handed the envelope to Haneul, who opened it and examined his scores. There was a deadly silence within the room as he was the last person to be checked. "Kageyama's lowest score..." Haneul said, looking at the papers, "Was a 38."

"By two points?!" Asahi exclaimed. "What class?" Asked Hinata. "Modern Japanese." "I'm sorry!" Kageyama apologized to Haneul, bowing. The brunette blushed, "It's fine. Now you know that if you put your head into it, you can do anything." However, the two first years started plotting how to get to Tokyo, with help from Tanaka.
