#10: Interhigh Preliminaries (Part 4)
As the day before, Haneul stood in front of her uncle's store, waiting for the others to pick her up. She wore her signature black shorts with her Karasuno jacket and white t-shirt, her bag hanging from her shoulder.
After a few minutes, Takeda pulled up, driving the bus. "Good morning," Haneul greeted with a smile, her face blushing red from the morning cold. "Morning!" Everyone else responded. This time, the only empty seat was aside Kei. Tadashi was in the back, having a conversation with Ennoshita and some of the other second years, so she took her seat aside him. Before pulling away, Takeda and Keishin glanced at the closed shop, wondering what had happened after they left the small Libero.
Kei silently held an earphone up to Haneul, who took it and placed it in her ear. Through the ride, she spent it listening to Kei's music, and texting Angelina on her phone. Once they made it to the gym, she helped Kiyoko bring their equipment inside, while this time, the ravenette manager carried the team bag.
"I'll carry that, so you can go change, Kazama-chan," Takeda said, taking the equipment from her. The boys had left already to change into their uniform. "Thank you, Takeda-sensei," Haneul smiled, taking her bag and hurrying to the girl's changing room.
After taking one last look in the mirror, Haneul left to the court. Even from the outside, she could hear the large amount of girls cheering for Aoba Johsai, but mostly Oikawa. She took one last breath before walking inside the court, making the opposite team's fans stop their cheering for a while.
Everyone looked at Haneul as she entered the court, making her uneasy. "Haneul-chan! You okay?" Tanaka asked, patting her in the back. "E-everyone's looking at me..." she commented, blushing. "They're wondering why you're here," Daichi started, holding a volleyball in hand, "So let's show them what you can do." Said captain grinned, and she smiled at him, nodding.
The game starts, and Haneul stands aside Yamaguchi and Sugawara in the bench area. Witb crossed arms, she sees as Oikawa spikes out of nowhere, shocking everyone. Haneul murmurs under her breath to keep it together, and Tadashi glances at her, hearing what she said. He notices that she's quieter than usual, with a look of concentration.
When Kageyama tosses to Hinata and the ball gets sent to Oikawa, he seems to be preparing to spike it, so Hinata and Tanaka jump to block. "Don't jump! It's a trap!" Haneul yelled, but it was too late. Oikawa changed to a tossing position at the last minute, sending the ball towards Iwaizumi and scoring.
The ball soon goes to Kageyama again, and Keishin is left to wonder how Haneul saw that move coming from Oikawa. Hinata goes right up to the net and calls for a toss at the same time as Tanaka is preparing to spike. However, Asahi is getting ready as well in the back. With Aobajohsai’s attention on the three attackers, Kageyama throws the ball over for a dump, shocking everyone.
Haneul and Sugawara clapped in unison, "Do it again~", but Ennoshita tells them not to put more wood in his fire. Afterwards, it's Kageyama’s turn to serve, but his ball ends up going out and it becomes Oikawa’s turn to serve. The ball seems to head towards Nishinoya, but it goes to his right instead. Despite that, Nishinoya still receives it. Haneul takes note of the way Oikawa serves and watches intently. Kageyama gets the ball and Hinata calls for it. The two perform their infamous quick strike and score.
When Aobajohsai calls for the time out, Haneul rushed to get them their towels and water bottles with Kiyoko. She looks at the opposing team, saying, "They probably figured out the signal," but no one seems to have heard her, since they were talking loudly among themselves.
Aobajohsai starts focusing its blockers up front and Haneul notices the pressure building up in Kageyama. Hinata was now in the back, and as Kageyama'ssetter dumped got blocked, she came to the conclusion that the dark setter was loosing his cool.
Hinata soon moves up front again with the rotation and calls for the ball. Haneul looks at Iwaizumi and Kindaichi, who weren't moving to block him immediately, but manage to touch Hinata's spike. Haneul but her lip, swearing in Korean under her breath. "They figured it out," she said loudly this time, causing Sugawara to look at her. "And Tobio-kun is loosing it." Sugawara raises a brow at her statement, but looks back at Kageyama, who was about to serve.
The setter messes up and only barely manages to turn it into a soft serve at the last second. The ball is received and sent back to their side, but Kageyama ends up receiving it. Daichi sets instead and Tanaka goes to spike, getting blocked completely.
Keishin quickly calls a time out as it is Oikawa's turn to serve again. He warns Kageyama not to lose his cool and lectures him on his setter dump. The match resumes soon after and this time, Tanaka receives the ball. Haneul looks at Keishin, giving him the time out sign as Oikawa seems to be targeting Tanaka. He calls the time out, using both of their time outside for the set.
As Tanaka apologizes for not calling for the last set, Haneul dumps a bit of cold water on him. "Cool down, Tanaka-senpai. Just do better next time," she smiled at him, who got pumped up. Daichi and Asahi silently thank her.
After the timeout ends, the players go back into position. Oikawa aims his serve at Tanaka again, receiving it barely with his stomach. Hinata saves it and Kageyama sends it back over towards Oikawa. However, Watari’s able to set the ball, surprising Haneul. Despite this, Nishinoya receives the ball perfectly and Kageyama gets ready to toss it. Tanaka loudly calls for it and jumps, slamming the ball past Kunimi and scoring, effectively stopping Oikawa’s momentum.
With a seven point gap, Haneul sees that Kageyama is sending sharper tosses, meaning that he is agitated. The ball soon goes right over the net and the two setters jump simultaneously to push it over. In his panic, Kageyama loses control to Oikawa, worsening his agitation. Haneul looks at Keishin and Takeda once that happened, and he nods. Kageyama ends up making a mistake with his toss at Kei, but Asahi saved it. Keishin then made a player change: Sugawara was stepping up.
Kageyama is switched out by Sugawara, and Haneul welcomes him with his towel and water bottle. "Tobio-kun, are you okay?" Haneul asked as the setter stood beside her in the bench area. He stayed silent, but Haneul said, "Y-You need to cool down a bit, okay?" This time, the setter nodded at her, taking a sip of water.
The match resumed and Iwaizumi went to spike right in front of Sugawara, but at the last second, Sugawara and Kei switched places, enabling Kei to block Iwaizumi. Hinata soon gets switched back in, and Nishinoya greets Haneul with a high five. The Libero already looked a little fatigued, since with the weird momentum they had, he was in the court for a while. Haneul gave him his water, and he thanked her. "I think... You're going to be called in for me, Ha-chan," Nishinoya said between pants.
"M-me?! B-but I'm not ready yet-" "We need to have their backs," Nishinoya interrupted her, and she nodded with a blush, fidgeting with her fingers. "O-okay."
The next move, Hinata scored with a spike. With this, the team was able to steadily catch up. Soon, with Sugawara's help, they were able to lower the point gap to only six points, but it’s still not enough and it becomes Oikawa’s turn to serve. Oikawa aimed cleverly in between Tanaka and Nishinoya, scoring easily with this.
The whistle is then blown, and everyone is surprised to see Haneul standing to the side for a player change, holding Nishinoya's number. The brunette was blushing and trembling in nervousness while standing there. Nishinoya ran to her, taking the number to change. "You'll do great!" He said before leaving her inside. She took a deep breath, entering the court.
Sugawara gave her a high-five when she entered, "Alright, kohai~! Don'tbe scared." "I-I'll do my best," Haneul said, her accent showing due to her nerves. Oikawa then proceeded to serve, and to everyone's surprise, Haneul managed to receive it on the first try.
Asahi’s back attack is received and the ball goes to Hinata, who barely manages to hit it over the net. As Aoba Johsai returns the attack, Hinata figured out the timing for his block, enabling him to stop Kindaichi. The ball flew to the back of the court, Haneul not being fast enough, getting an out. Aobajohsai wins this set.
During the break, Keishin and Takeda praise Haneul for receiving Oikawa's serve on the first try, but she says, "Thank you, but I couldn't save that last ball..." "Don't beat yourself up about it!" Tadashi said, smiling at her. "You did great, right, Tsuki?" The blonde giant nodded, wiping his sweat with his towel. Haneul smiled, thanking them for the encouragement.
Keishin tells them to prioritize their defense. Nishinoya approaches Haneul and hugs her, saying, "You're very skilled, Ha-chan! I taught you well." "Y-Yes, Yuu-senpai." Oikawa went to serve again, and everyone noticed right away that only Haneul and Daichi were in the back to receive it. As expected, Haneul's able to receive Oikawa’s serve and the team prepares for a counterattack. Sugawara gives the ball to Tanaka, who blasts through the blockers, enabling the team to pull ahead soon.
Keishin switched back Sugawara and Kageyama, who is greeted by Haneul with a smile. "Even if Haneul-chan doesn't speak much during the game, everyone manages to understand her. It's like she brings a sense of ease over everyone," Takeda noticed, gaining a nod from Keishin. "Not just that. The idea of having two Liberos backing the team up rises our morale," Kaishin added, crossing his arms.
Kageyama then gets ready to serve. Kageyama holds the ball and goes into full concentration, glancing at Haneul, who simply smiles at him. Kageyama serves right at Aoba Johsai’s libero, but still scores. He then gives Tanaka a high five, and gives Haneul a pat in the head.
The match continues, but Aoba Johsai doesn’t appear to be affected by Kageyama’s comeback. Haneul notices that Kageyama has regained his momentum and while he only cared about the opposing blockers before, he seems to show more concern about his own teammates now. In addition, with hers and Sugawara’s secret signals, Kageyama and Hinata are unstoppable.
Suddenly, Kei’s switched in and Aoba Johsai calls a quick timeout. Haneul walks over to the sidelines, where Kiyoko gives her a towel. "Thank you, Kiyoko-senpai," Haneul smiled. "How's your arm?" The ravenette asked, pointing at the purple bruise she had. "O-oh, I'm fine! Thank you for asking!"
Haneul then moves to speak witb Kei, but Kageyama calls Kei and asks him for the type of toss he wants all of a sudden. Kei insults Kageyama initially, but Haneul tells him not to be so rude, so he replies that he wants consistent tosses. To their surprise, Kageyama agrees calmly.
The match resumes and Kageyama gets into position. He sends Kei a softer toss, which Kei pulls a feint off of. Haneul cheers from the bench area along with Tadashi. Haneul looks to the Aoba Johsai bench for a second, seeing Angelina taking notes diligently. When the older girl sees her staring, she waves at her slightly. Haneul returns the greeting, continuing watching the game.
Kageyama sends Kei a toss and Watari is tricked into thinking that it’s another feint. At the last second, Kei turns it into a spike and scores. They soon reach the twenty-four point mark, but it becomes Oikawa’s turn to serve. Keishin notices Haneul meddling with her arm, because she did a bad receive and hit by accident. He called Nishinoya and switched them after Haneul's last play on the court.
However, before Haneul can go back to the bench with the others, Kiyoko tells her that her phone has six missed calls from her uncle, and hands it to her. Haneul thanks her and goes outside to the hallway to make the phone call, only to be insulted by her uncle. He had been watching the game all along, and was mad she was 'tarnishing her mother's name' by playing in a boys team. He threatened her by promising to beat her up when she got home, and proceeded to call her all sorts of things.
Haneul takes it all, without saying anything, until her uncle hangs up. She goes back to see they finished a time out, and hands Kiyoko her phone back, thanking her. Going back to the bench, Hinata wonders why she's gone silent. Haneul looked at the game, but wasn't processing anything that was happening anymore.
Hinata noticed her being slightly distant and alerted Sugawara. "Is somethingbothering you, Ha-chan?" He asked, placing a hand on her shoulder. This caused her to jerk up at the sudden touch, but she told him not to worry and smiled at him, beginning to pay attention to the game to take her mind over what was going to happen.
Once it's match point, she yells at the team not to be intimidated. Haneul goes back to being silent, and Hinata spikes with all his power, but gets blocked. The ball ricochets off the blockers’ hands and flies to the back. Kageyama, Nishinoya, and Asahi run for it, but don’t make it on time. The ball lands and Aobajohsai wins the game. Without a word, she goes to line up with the boys, trying her best to hold her tears, which spill once they thank the audience.
Haneul tries her best not to be seen by the other members, feeling too vulnerable, so she goes to gather the water bottles and towels that were on the side while the others took their stuff and headed outside the gym. Oikawa sees her crying from afar and tells Angelina. Haneul puts the things in their stuff pile in the waiting hall and turns to head to the washroom, when Angelina hugs her.
"Don't cry, Haneul-chan," Angelina says, trying her best to comfort the younger female. "You were awesome," the eldest kept going as Haneul cried onto her jacket. Iwaizumi then called after Angelina, since they had another game. "I'll call you later, okay?" Haneul nodded at her friend's words, watching her walk away. The Libero went to wash her face in the bathroom, coming out to help Kiyoko and Keishin put everything in the bus.
She holds her tears in the bus, but once they go to the restaurant Ukai took them to, she's the first one to start crying while eating. She's sitting in the corner of the table, aside Kei, who notices she isn't eating much. The tall blond hesitantly puts two dumplings in her rice bowl. Haneul looks up at him with teary eyes, but he just pats her head.
Back in the bus, she's the last one inside, and talks to Takeda, "Sensei, I'm going to the reunion today. You don't need to drop me off home." Keishin and Takeda exchange looks, but he just nods while she walks to take her seat aside Kei. The blond offers her his earphone again, and they spent their ride back to the school like that.
At the school gym, Takeda tells them to take the day off the next day to rest, since they worked hard this whole time. She walks home with Kei, since Tadashi went to practice serving either way. "You're walking too slow," Kei said as his earphone fell. "Oh- Sorry, Kei-kun." The middle blocker felt something was wrong, but he didn't want to pry. Haneul was silent through the bus ride, and said goodbye to him in his stop. Kei watched as she left inside the bus to her home, what happened yesterday in the back of his head.
