Chapter 15 - Allistair's POV
The moment Tahlia stepped through the penthouse door, I could see the weariness weighing heavily on her beautiful features. Her shoulders sagged with the burdens she carried, and an ache settled deep in my chest.
To see the woman I loved in such anguish was like a blade twisting in my heart. Without a word, I gathered her trembling frame into my arms, holding her tightly against me.
"I've got you, Tally," I murmured into her hair. "You're safe now."
She melted into my embrace, her walls crumbling as the dam finally broke. Soft sobs wracked her body, punctuated by pauses to catch her breath as she relayed the night's unsettling events with Drago.
The mere mention of that vile snake's name made my blood boil. How dare he make threats against her? If he thought he could lay a finger on one of Tahlia's blonde tresses and escape unscathed, he was sorely mistaken. My blazing fury would incinerate him into oblivion before he could so much as blink.
Even in the midst of her breakdown, Tahlia's brilliant strategic mind was at work. Her bold gambit with Drago was as impressive as it was reckless. Pride swelled in my chest to see her cunning and determination on full display. She truly was the most incredible woman I had ever known.
"I will spend every breath in my body protecting you, cherishing you," I vowed fiercely. "You are my light, my reason for living. And I will burn this world to ashes before I let anyone harm you."
In that moment, tending to Tahlia's fragile state was my sole priority. I tightened my protective embrace, shielding her from the cruelties that threatened to consume us both. My thumb traced soothing circles over the silken fabric of her dress as I peppered tender kisses along her crown.
"Let it all out, my love. I'm here."
For long moments, we stood intertwined, her tears leaving damp trails against my chest. But I didn't mind bearing the sting of her sorrow – I would gladly shoulder a thousand times that pain if it meant easing her suffering, even for a moment.
Tahlia was the light in my life, the one pure, untarnished thing that remained in this world of darkness and deceit. And I would sacrifice everything, lay my very soul bare, to keep her radiance burning bright.
As her sobs subsided, she tilted her face up to me, eyes glistening. "I don't know what I'd do without you, Alli."
"You'll never have to find out," I said softly, cradling her cheek. "We're in this together, remember?"
She met my ferocity with her own blazing determination. "We'll face them together and win, no matter the cost."
Reverently, I traced the delicate curve of her mouth, committing every inch of her beauty to memory. As if sensing my thoughts, she kissed me purposefully, hands trailing delicious waves of desire through me. "I love you," I breathed against her lips, "more than the stars themselves."
She was my world, my everything – and I would burn the cosmos itself to ashes to keep her safe and happy.
As if sensing the direction of my thoughts, she kissed me softly yet decisively. Her hands traveled down my nape and chest, sending delicious waves of desire coursing through me. God, this woman had an infernal power to ignite my passion with the simplest touch. I gazed at her once more, lifting her chin to meet my ardent stare.
"I love you," I breathed, pouring every ounce of devotion into those three words. "More than the stars themselves."
"And I love you," she echoed, rising on her tiptoes to capture my lips in a searing, passionate kiss.
A soft, contented sigh escaped her as she nuzzled closer in the aftermath. In that moment, the shadows lifted, if only briefly. We had found solace in each other's arms, a refuge from the tempest that raged beyond these walls. When we finally parted, breathless and disheveled, I pressed my brow to hers.
"No matter what happens, we'll face it side by side. Your battles are mine, Tahlia. Always."
As our bodies molded together in a fervent embrace, the rest of the world faded away. There was only us – two souls bound by a love that defied the constraints of mere mortals. My hands roamed the contours of her body, reacquainting myself with every dip and swell, as if mapping the path to paradise itself.
"I want more, please," she breathed, biting her lower lip in a gesture that made my body feel intensely hot.
God, she was a beautiful sight – vulnerable yet smoldering, soft and feminine, a side only my eyes had ever been blessed enough to witness.
"Are you sure that's what you want, love?" I rasped.
She nodded, and with that silent acquiescence, I lifted her into my arms, her delicious citric and flowery scent setting me ablaze with lustful longing as her legs wrapped around my waist. Carrying her gently to the bedroom, I laid her on the bed like the precious treasure she was, intent on showing her the depths of my all-consuming love.
My hands expertly undressed her, peeling away each layer to reveal the flawless, creamy skin beneath as she tremble with anticipation under my every touch. Tahlia was a goddess given form, her body a masterpiece and I worshipped every inch of her with fervent kisses and tender caresses, stoking the flames of her desire until she writhed beneath me.
"Allistair..." she breathed my name like a prayer as I seared a path down the supple skin of her thighs.
Hearing the husky need in her voice inflamed me further. With painstaking reverence, I loved her thoroughly, utterly, leaving no patch of satin flesh untouched by my adoring lips and hands. We did it over and over again, until we crested together in a blinding wave of ecstasy, it was as if the universe had realigned solely for this moment of profound connection.
After spending the entire night making love, Tahlia's spent yet thoroughly satisfied form lay nestled in my arms as I watched over her slumber. Just observing the rise and fall of her chest, the look of utter peace on her features, was bliss beyond measure.
She was everything to me – the air I breathed, the blood pulsing through my veins. And I would gladly sacrifice it all to keep her safe, especially from slimy snakes like Drago or that unsettling Professor Hahn.
Frowning, I mentally reviewed the disturbing information my private investigators had uncovered about the psychology professor. There was no trail on him from before six years ago – it was as if he had materialized out of thin air. His only apparent close connection was to Rosemary, that red-headed girl I had rescued from Robbie's clutches at the ball.
Initially, I had been skeptical of Tahlia's unease around Hahn. But when Tessa mentioned how uncharacteristically withdrawn my love had suddenly become, shutting herself off from even her closest friends for days on end, I knew something was deeply amiss.
Tahlia only retreated into her shell like that when she was reeling from major trauma, like the time her monstrous father had struck her unconscious, or when her bitch of a mother nearly killed her with those insidious "natural slimming remedies".
The thought of Tahlia suffering alone, of anyone daring to lay a hand on her sweet flesh, made my vision bleed red with murderous intensity. I had immediately set my underground resources to tracing her movements, confirming her steps through my trusted informant Helga, my eyes and ears at the Steelman Manor. It wasn't difficult to piece together that the psychology professor was somehow involved, especially after hacking into the hospital security footage.
Watching the encounter between Hahn and my beloved had been one of the most difficult things I'd ever forced myself to witness. Seeing the way he touched her, the intimate way he held her after the patient's attack...a maelstrom of jealousy had consumed me. If I hadn't been so focused on confirming the truth first, I might have committed an act of blind vengeance right then and there.
Only Tahlia's anguished reply to my late-night text and the glimpse of her ankle wrapped in a bandage had stopped me from storming straight to Hahn's office to rip out his throat with my bare hands.
The turtleneck she wore the next day did little to hide the evidence of her assault from my desperate eyes. I had purposely kissed along the exposed column of her neck, both craving her touch and silently vowing justice for the pain she had endured.
When I gently pressed her about what happened, she had deflected and shut down, as was her way when the trauma became too overwhelming to process.
Seeing the brilliant flame of her spirit dim, even momentarily, twisted the knife lodged deep in my heart. More than anything, I longed for her to open up to me, to share her burdens so I could take even an ounce of that weight off her shoulders.
But Tahlia's monstrous father had spent years indoctrinating her with his twisted ideals of how a "Steelman" should behave - emotions repressed, arrogant and inconsiderate of others, vulnerability equated with weakness. It was going to take time to undo that conditioning, to help her realize that sharing her heart with me was a strength, not a failing.
As the first golden rays of dawn filtered through the bedroom windows, Tahlia began to stir in my arms. Her eyes fluttered open, and she graced me with a soft, sleepy smile.
"Hello, handsome," she murmured, placing a tender kiss on my cheek.
In that moment, just seeing her rested and content, my heart felt full to bursting. This incredible woman was my partner, my love, my life. Pulling her closer, I nuzzled her hair, breathing in her intoxicating scent. "How are you feeling, my love?"
She sighed contentedly, nestling deeper into my embrace. "Peaceful. For the first time in ages."
A smile curved my lips as pride swelled in my chest. I had given her that respite, that sanctuary amidst the chaos. Tenderly, I brushed an errant lock of hair from her face.
"I'm glad. You deserve to feel nothing but happiness and safety."
Her expression sobered then, eyes searching mine intently. "Alli...about last night, with Drago—"
I cut her off with a soft kiss, not wanting her to relive those dark moments just yet. "We'll deal with that snake in due time," I said firmly. "But first, I need to know you're alright. Really alright."
She held my gaze for a long moment before giving a slow nod. "I am now," she said simply.
Those three words spoke volumes of the profound trust that existed between us. In them, I heard her inner most hurts, her worries over my potential judgement. But I also heard her renewed conviction, that unbreakable vow to face the coming battles united, come what may.
Cupping her face, I met her eyes with an intensity that allowed no doubts. "I will always be here for you, Tally."
A genuine smile graced her angelic face, lighting her up from within. Stretching up, she claimed my lips in a searing kiss filled with unspoken promises and visceral need.
When we finally parted, chests heaving, Tahlia brushed her nose against mine in an Eskimo kiss. "Together, we'll get through this against the odds," she declared.
Fire danced in my gaze as I committed her words to heart. "Together, against all odds."
That's what we were poised to do - defy the odds. Not just the minor annoyances like Drago or Hahn, but the very forces that sought to control and manipulate us.
My father's reign of deception would end, one way or another. The man who had once been my idol had revealed himself as a monster without mercy, whose cruelty and greed had cost my beloved mother her life. I would never forgive him for that, nor would I rest until he faced the consequences of his foul deeds.
And Tahlia's dad, that vicious, self-serving monster... he was worse than the dark secrets that surrounded him, like impossible webs to untangle. He even dared to try and use his own daughter, dangling her to me like a prize to be won, a pawn to be sacrificed for their own twisted ambitions. Tahlia was a queen in her own right, and I would never take her love for granted.
Yet, deep within, a fear gnawed at me. What if uncovering our fathers' secrets shattered the fragile peace we had found in each other's arms? What if the weight of their sins proved too heavy a burden for our love to bear? The thought alone tense every muscle in my body with an ominous weight, but I pushed it aside, determined to face whatever challenges lay ahead, no matter the cost.
As I gazed at the remarkable woman cradled in my arms, I made a solemn vow to myself and to her. I would become the man worthy of her ferocious devotion, a warrior as uncompromising in his convictions as she was relentless in hers.
I silently pledged to shield Tahlia from the tempests of hatred and greed that swirled ever closer. And I would fight until my dying breath to keep her radiant flame blazing ever brighter.
