Chapter Six, The Outcome
Chapter Six, The Outcome
A day after their arrival to Winterfell, Lord Ned Stark was in his office with Oberyn Martell and Lord Vanar Velayron; he was rather confused about this meeting as it had been asked by the latter two men.
"What can I do for you two, my Lords?" Ned asked cordially, linking his fingers together under his chin; he was trying not to be unnerved by Vanar's hard stare but it was becoming increasingly difficult the longer the silence stretched on.
"I have a stipulation for you, Lord Stark." Oberyn said at last in a no nonsense tone of voice.
"Go on." Ned waved on, becoming more intrigued than nervous now.
"If my niece is to marry your Heir then she is also allowed to marry Heir Laenar Velayron as well." He held up a hand to hold off any questions or arguments. "Visenya and Laenar had been betrothed to marry before the Usurper interfered in her life AGAIN!!" Oberyn had become angrier the more he talked about Robert Baratheon. Not that Ned could blame him. Just because he was his childhood friend didn't mean he agreed with what had been done to Elia Martell and her children. Nor what he continued to do to Visenya or how he hunted Viserys and Daenerys.
Sitting back in his chair, Ned seriously thought over the stipulation put before him. He knew neither Lords before him would go back on it, not that again he could really blame them or disagree with them. Visenya's life had seen so much in death and others trying to control her.
"All three of them will be equals within the marriage, and Visenya will keep all of her titles and last name as she is of higher rank than both Laenar and Robb. They would he her King Consorts." Oberyn added, upon seeing an interested look within Ned's eyes.
"Also, my Armada will support the North's own in White Harbour." Vanar stated. "The triad will ultimately increase the North's strength as already Doran is rebuilding Moat Cailin."
"Perhaps you can use it for Jon once it is rebuilt. To protect him from both the Usurper and your wife's cruelty." Oberyn suggested.
Ned nodded, he did agree with giving Moat Cailin to Jon (who now, like his children and wife knew the truth surrounding his parentage and why he - Ned - had lied. He had also sent a letter asking Lady Mormont of Bear Island to set up a betrothal between Theon and her eldest daughter, Dacey, and had made a start on repairing his relationship with all his children but Theon, Jon and Arya in particular). He was grateful to these Lords for their help.
Already he was having the Sept within Winterfell torn down and had plans to use the materials to fix the Broken Tower and bolster any other structural failing that needed repairing.
"While I am grateful to you my Lords for your help in making the North whole once more, and I am inclined to agree as Visenya's life has been riddled with death and interfered with enough, I however; have no words to describe how sorry I am for the part I played in that." Ned apologised, sincerely.
"That said, Visenya must give both my son and Heir Laenar three children each at least, and I know this will take time but she is to treat both young men as equals. My son is truly interested in getting to know Visenya and show her he's not his aunt or his mother or even like his namesake."
Both Oberyn and Vanar conceded as it was a rather fair argument and agreed with Ned's counter stipulation.
"Agreed. However, Visenya, as Queen, will decide which child, either Rylen or any child she births, would be best to rule and not necessarily the eldest or even the male Heir. Just like the decree she passed in Dorne."
Seeing that Lord Vanar had no problem with this Ned agreed and threw the contract Robert or rather the Lannisters had drawn up into the fire. As the old and misogynistic contract burned to nought but ash in the fireplace, Ned, Oberyn and Vanar drew up a new contract where all three of their children/charges were equals. Once satisfied with the new triad contract Ned sent for Robb and Laenar, planning to inform them first before Visenya to avoid any possible arguments.
* * *
While the three were talking to Robb and Laenar, Visenya was relaxing in the hot springs with her friends/handmaidens Marlessa Veltas and Nora Zhax (who were in a relationship that was fully supported by Visenya and those that knew and loved them), Lasa, and her aunt Ellaria. Sirs Arthur Dayne and Baristan Selmy and Mort (Death) kept watch with their backs to the ladies but their eyes never stopped their assessment of the surroundings. Visenya was only able to relax a little being away from Rylen in a new environment as Obara and Sal were both standing outside her room where Rylen was having an afternoon nap.
As for Marros Zhax, Nora's elder brother and Arthur's squire, he was no doubt in the training grounds being put through his paces by her cousins. She almost felt sorry for him. Almost. However, the quiet chatter as the four gossiped and the peaceful atmosphere was not meant to last as it was shattered into oblivion with the arrival of Catelyn and the Septa - Visenya forgot her name, not that she cared - both held dark thundering looks upon their faces as their glared accusingly at Visenya; only to be stopped from further approaching by Arthur, Mort and Selmy.
"You heathen girl!" Catelyn spat. "How dare you come here and get my Sept torn down! Not here even a day and already you're ruining everything! If that wasn't bad enough, that bastard boy Jon, is now set to inherit Moat Cailin which your uncle is rebuilding! It should've gone to my Brandon! And now -"
"If I were you, Lady Stark," Visenya spat, a dark look upon her face as she climbed to her feet, uncaring of her naked form glaring at the unrepentant women before her.
A roar above their heads announced the return of her babies after their hunting (they knew not to hunt people or to hunt in populated areas so the inhabited farms surrounding the north would be fine, especially as she had created an area for her babies to hunt before their arrival), no doubt sensing her anger.
"I would choose your next words very carefully. I know Lord Stark told you the truth about Jon so you're just being a callous and petty bitch! Also do not EVER use such a degrading term!"
"How dare you!!" Catelyn screeched shrilly, intending on hitting Visenya no doubt but the thundering roars of her babies behind Visenya, her swirling magic, the knives Lasa and Ellaria were pointing at her, stopped Catelyn in her tracks while the three men held Catelyn and the Septa back.
"You are nought but a heathen child who will destroy all Lady Catelyn as tried so hard to build. Now your wanton ways have somehow convinced Lord Stark to change the contract between you and his son into a triad!
Between you, his sweet son and that Velayron Heir!"
"It's not unnatural at all actually!" Lasa spat, fed up with these two. "Visenya is amazing and so much better than her namesake, and now it's just another similarity between them but in reverse. You should be thanking her, Lady Stark instead of this vitriol; because without Visenya, Robb would've remained only a Lord and Warden, and now he will be King Consort."
Not having anything else to say to that, the pair stormed away huffing in frustration that they couldn't bring the girl to heel.
Satisfied with their departure, Lasa and Visenya returned to their spot in the spring, accepting the glass of Dornish wine Nora passed them.
"I told you your uncle and Vanar would sort things out, sweetie." Ellaria pointed out, clinking her glass with the others as a blinding smile spread across Visenya's face. She could finally marry the love of her life. She supposed if Robb proved he was nothing like his mother, his aunt or his namesake then she could learn to get to know him. It would only be a small price to pay.
