Chapter 75

"If Filch catches us and gets us into trouble because of you, I'll kill you as soon as you sober up," Diana said jokingly as they finally reached the entrance to the Gryffindor common room.

"Password?" asked the Fat Lady, looking down at the two of them curiously from inside her portrait.

"Oh, how ravishing you look tonight, my Fair Lady! I've never noticed how beautiful you looked before!" Remus said dramatically, smiling brightly at the woman in the portrait.

"Oh... thank you, Remus." The Fat Lady chuckled lightly, looking flattered as she blushed.

"It's the truth. You know, I think it's very mean of people to call you Fat Lady. You're very lovely. I mean, what's wrong with being curvy? It's very very very pretty. Wow... I might actually be falling in love with you," said Remus, looking up at the Fat Lady admirably while leaning on Diana who was trying her best not to fall while holding him up as well.

"Is your friend okay?" The Fat Lady asked Diana quietly while watching Remus worriedly.

"He's never been better," Diana said sarcastically, glaring sideways at Remus as she tried to hold him from falling. "Can't you just let us in? You've known him for six years."

"I'm afraid not. I need the password," said the Fat Lady, staring at Remus in horror as he made kissy faces at her before breaking down into giggles.

"Remus, for crying out loud! What's the freaking password!?" Diana cried out in frustration, her arms growing tired from supporting him.

"Hmm... I think it was something in the lines of Jimmy... or maybe Jamesyweed... or... Weedjims... Jimonweed... Weed — Have you ever noticed that if you repeat a word a few times it will lose all its meaning?" Remus laughed. "Here. Try it with me. Weed. Weed. Weed. Weed. Weed. Weed. Weed. Weed. Weed. Weed. Weed. Wee — Ha! I sound like a frog who had a baby with a chicken! Weed! Weed! Weed! W—"

"Oh, for Godric's sake! The password Jimsonweed! Just get inside and stop talking!" The Fat Lady huffed out as she held her ears, opening the portrait for them.

"Oh, thank God." Diana sighed in relief, dragging a giggling Remus inside. "I really hope you remember all of this tomorrow so I can make fun of you while you're in remorse and suffering from a bad headache."

Diana had never thought she would step into the Gryffindor common room ever again, but as she looked around, she couldn't deny that she liked being in here. It certainly was the coziest place she'd ever seen. It was a circular room full of squashy scarlet armchairs, tables, and a fireplace nearby that warmed up the whole place.

"Oi! You two! Stop kissing! Kissing is illegal after twelve o'clock!" Remus suddenly yelled at two second year Gryffindors who were sitting on the couch in front of the fireplace, doing their homework late at night.

"But we weren't —" the boy tried to say, but Remus cut him off.

"I said no kissing! That would be fifty points from Gryffind— hmph!" Diana was quick to hold a hand over Remus's hand, silencing him and muffling out his words as the two second years grabbed their books and ran upstairs to their dorms.

"The Slytherins will kick me out of their House if they find out I stopped you from taking fifty points off Gryffindor," Diana grumbled, removing her hand from Remus's mouth.

Remus wetted his lips, frowning. "Why does your hand taste like Fire Whiskey?"

"I can't be sure, but I'm guessing that's you," Diana said mockingly.

"Oooh! You're right!" Remus nodded delightfully.

"All right, this is as far as I can come with you. Just go up to your dorm and get some sleep, okay? That is, if you don't trip down the stairs and break your neck and die," she said blankly, helping him toward the spiral staircase at the other end of the room.

"Why don't you come upstairs with me?" Remus asked with a hurt expression upon his face, as though she had shattered his heart into a million pieces only with those words.

"Because your friends are probably up there and I don't want to deal with them and their questions right now," Diana reasoned, pushing him lightly forward and closer to the staircase.

"Nah. It's only two a.m. They're probably in the kitchen right now, getting snacks."

"At this hour?" She lifted her brows in surprise.

"Yeah... We have a messed up sleeping schedule. Don't worry about it. Anyway, I was supposed to go with them, but I wanted to see you!" he said with a chuckle, pinching Diana's freckly cheek.

She smacked his hand away grumpily. "Oh, just get upstairs, Lupin!"

"Yay!" Remus did a little dance and shimmied his shoulders, but he quickly got dizzy and nearly fell again, so Diana had to hold him again and lead him upstairs.

"Ugh, I think I'm gonna throw up," Remus muttered, holding his stomach as he directed Diana toward his dorm, which was thankfully empty.

"Please don't aim it at me." Diana grimaced in disgust as she led him toward his bed.

"No, I can't go to bed! I gotta pee!"

"You're lucky you're pretty, Lupin, or I would've punched you in the face," said Diana as she helped him toward the bathroom inside the dorm before closing its door behind him.

She stood beside the dorm's window, watching the Hogwarts grounds outside, almost hidden beneath the night's cloak. Diana then started pacing around the room for a few minutes, waiting for Remus, but there was no sign of him.

"Remus?" she called out to him as she walked toward the bathroom door. She knocked a few times, but he didn't answer. "Remus, you've been in there for almost ten minutes. Are you alive?"

     Still no answer.

Sighing to herself, Diana braced herself for the worst sight and opened the bathroom door fearfully to check up on him, only to see that Remus had fallen asleep there on the floor.

"Dealing with a Mandrake would've been easier than this," she mumbled to herself before walking forward and kneeling down, shaking him awake. "Remus? Remus! Get up!"

"What..." Remus blinked a few times as he shot awake. All he could see were blurry shapes.

"Come on. Up you get," said Diana, grabbing his arm and helping him to his feet.

"Everything is spinning." Remus groaned, holding his head as he stumbled toward his bed with Diana's help, dropping himself down on the mattress.

"You'll be okay," she tried to tell him soothingly, helping him out of his shoes and pulling the scarlet blanket over him on the bed. "Goodnight."

But just as she was about to turn around, he grabbed onto her arm, holding her back. "You're not leaving me, are you?"

"Well, you can't really expect me to spend the night here."

"Why not? There's a lot of free space on my bed." He chuckled sleepily, patting the mattress.

Diana sighed, sitting beside him at the edge of the bed. "Will it help if I stay here until you fall asleep?"

"Only if you promise not to leave until tomorrow," he said, getting up to a sitting position on the bed with difficulty.

"Remus, I c —"

"Please?" he whispered, silencing her as he placed a hand over her cheek.

"Don't — don't do this," Diana said quietly, grabbing onto his hand and lowering it.

"Why not?"

Diana didn't know how to answer this. She hated how every little thing he did hurt her. Everything he did made her fall for him more, and it hurt her because she knew he felt nothing. She would feel butterflies in her stomach each time his skin brushed against hers, but she knew that it was meaningless to him, and it hurt.

"Because I don't want you to do it. That should be a good enough reason," Diana said firmly, but the words were far from truth, as though it was her stubbornness speaking instead.

Remus smiled giddily. "But I really like you."

Diana looked away from him. If it were any other time, her heart would've exploded from happiness upon hearing those words coming from him. But now, knowing that he was only saying it because of the alcohol in his system, it only angered her.

"You just told the Fat Lady that you loved her," said Diana, trying to keep her voice playful.

Remus let out yet another childish chuckle. "I might love her, but I really like you."

"You don't," she whispered, looking away from him as she felt a pang in her heart.

"Of course I do! I like you, you dum-dum!"

"Very funny," Diana muttered under her breath, getting up to her feet.

But Remus moved forward on the bed quickly, grabbing Diana's waist a dragging her back toward him. She suddenly felt the breath hitch in her chest as he moved her closer to where he sat at the edge of the bed, so that Diana was now standing between his legs, with his arms still wrapped around her.

"Please let me go," Diana whispered, feeling a lump grow in her throat uncontrollably, unable to look back at him.

"But I don't want you to leave..." Remus said sleepily, trying to keep his eyes open as he held onto her, looking up at her longingly. "I — I really want to kiss you."

     "Remus —"

      "Can I kiss you?"

Diana felt it hard to breathe as her whole face heated up, her heart pounding against her chest while she looked back into his chocolate brown eyes. But instead of answering him, she gently grabbed ahold of his arms, removing them from around her before leading him back so he was once again laying down on the mattress. But this time, he was too dizzy and sleepy to fight as she pulled the blanket on top of him once again.

He tried keeping his eyes open, but his eyelids grew heavier and heavier by each second, until he finally closed them.

Diana leaned in, ran a hand through his sandy brown hair, and whispered softly in his ear, "If you ask me again tomorrow... I will say yes."

With that, she closed her eyes and placed a small kiss on his temple as he fell asleep, before turning around and leaving the room.
