Chapter 133
Diana paced around the Potter's house in Godric's Hollow, where they were all gathered; where they were all supposed to gather after finding the Horcruxes, hours ago.
Remus and Diana were first to return with Rowena Ravenclaw's Diadem, followed shortly by James and Lily, returning from the Malfoy Manor with Tom Riddle's Diary. James and Lily had a few misses by running into Death Eaters, almost caught at the very last second, but they managed to escape.
"Where is everyone else?" Diana huffed anxiously. All the others present at the house seemed just as scared, not sure of their friends' fate.
James was hugging Lily as they were sitting on the couch, running his hand up and down her back to calm her down. But he was just as worried.
Dumbledore and Moody had evacuated the village of all the Muggles, and had gathered whoever they thought would want to stand up and fight. Professor McGonagall, Hagrid, Professor Flitwick, Aberforth, some from the Ministry, a few of the old students who had already graduated Hogwarts but wanted to join the war.
This was the night it all had to end.
They had placed protective charms around the village like a shield, but they knew this was just to buy time.
Everyone inside suddenly jumped when they heard someone Apparating outside the house. They all ran outside, seeing Kreacher and Sirius, who was carrying his brother.
"Move aside!" Sirius yelled, trying to run into the house. "Water! Someone bring water!"
Lily ran into the kitchen, bringing a large glass to where Sirius had laid down Regulus on the couch in the dim-lit living room. He helped Regulus drink down the water. He looked almost dead, as white as a corpse.
"What happened?" James asked briskly. "Did you get it?"
In answer, Sirius dug into his pocket, taking out the locket of Salazar Slytherin.
They sat there like that for what felt like an hour that suddenly another sound alarmed them. Alice and Frank had just appeared outside.
Lily ran out again, hugging Alice in relief when she saw that her friend was safe and sound. Alice still had resemblances to Bellatrix from the Polyjuice potion, but she was slowly transforming back to herself.
"Frank. He's hurt," Alice said quickly, pulling away from Lily's embrace.
"I'm fine. It's nothing," said Frank, limping forward until they were back in the house. There was a big cut over his leg. Professor Flitwick quickly began to attend to it.
"They caught us," Frank went on. "We confunded the goblin to get us into the vault, but we think another goblin alarmed the Lestranges. They came after us. We did manage to get the Goblet, but we're certain that the Death Eaters and Voldemort now know what we are after."
"It won't be long until they get here," said Moody. "The moment we destroy the Horcruxes, it Voldemort will know exactly where we are. They are connected to him, after all."
"But that's good. We want them here. This is where the fight is supposed to be," said Sirius.
"Is everyone else back?" Alice asked, looking around the room.
"Only Layla and Marlene are missing," said Diana, her hands shaky, though she was trying to hide it.
"Oh, God!" Alice suddenly gasped. They all turned around to see what had grabbed her attention until they saw Marlene, standing by the open door of the house.
She was wet all over, blood running down her forehead. One hand was holding her wand, the other the Gaunt's ring. Her eyes were red and puffy. There was no emotion on her face. She looked like a walking corpse.
Diana slowly stood to her feet, catching Marlene eyes. Her heart dropped. She began shaking her head as the realization caught onto her. But she couldn't believe it. She didn't want to believe it.
She waited for Marlene to speak, but only a tear dropped from her eye. Lips trembling, all Marlene managed to get out was, "I couldn't save her."
Lily and Alice ran to Marlene, hugging her, both beginning to cry. Diana stood there still, frozen, her legs rooted to the ground. She couldn't move. She couldn't breathe.
Regulus stood up weakly, approaching Diana. His eyes, too, were filled with tears. He was still in disbelief too.
"Diana?" Remus tried to call her gently, but that was when Diana broke down. She screamed, dropping down to her knees. Remus tried calming her down, tried talking to her, but no one understood what it was like for her.
Layla was the first thing to family that Diana ever had. She was a sister to her. She was everything to her.
Marlene moved forward and dropped herself to the floor beside Diana, and they hugged each other as they both cried. Regulus had left the living room and had gone into the kitchen, not wishing anyone to see how hard he was weeping.
After what felt like years, Diana finally fell quiet. She stood up, wiped her tears away. There was no longer sadness on her face. Only hatred.
"Bring the daggers. We're finishing this right now."
"Diana, it's okay," Remue said softly. "We can wait until —"
"No. There's no point it waiting."
Marlene nodded, still crying. "She's right. We have to do this. It's now or never."
One after another, they all left the house, waking to the middle of street of the quiet Godric's Hollow, the rain still pouring.
One by one, they laid the Horcruxes down beside one another in a circle. Diana kneeled down by the Diadem, James down by the Diary, Frank sat right before the Goblet, Sirius by the locket, and lastly Marlene sat before the ring.
The rest stood back, wands at the ready, watching anxiously. With the daggers in their hands, the five that were kneeled on the wet ground looked at each other, and by one last nod of encouragement, they all raised the daggers, the next moment digging them hard into the Horcruxes.
An explosion erupted, hurtling them away. Suddenly, a black smoke arose, and amidst it suddenly came a scream of pain, echoing through the air, until it finally disappeared.
Everything fell quiet. Everyone kept looking at each other, waiting. This seemed easy. Too easy.
And that was when it happened.
A loud eruption came from ahead. All head jerked upward, only to see the Death Eaters, their spells crushing through the invisible shield around Godric's Hollow, and in front of their army stood Lord Voldemort, with an army of more than three hundred Death Eaters, while the Order contained no more than forty people.
But they had Albus Dumbledore.
The barrier broke at last, and the war began.
Chaos reigned the village. The Death Eaters' Stunning Spells flew far over their heads. They shot through, some spells hitting the houses and breaking them down. Duels broke down.
Yaxley was in combat with Flitwick, a masked Death Eater dueling young Kingsley
right beside them. James directed a Stunnning Spell toward the masked Death Eater; it missed but nearly hit Sirius.
Sirius stopped and gave James a look. "Trying to kill me, Prongs?"
James grinned sheepishly. "Sorry, Padfoot." He rushed forward, stunning another masked wizard.
People slipped and staggered as they ran across the wet street, still pouring rain above them, the storm and lightening roaring.
Sirius began to duel Bellatrix, her screams of laughters were mad.
"Missed me, little cousin?" She laughed. Sirius raised his wand and so did she, their spells reaching each other at the same time, creating a bond of light. Sirius held on tight to his wand, putting all he had in it, but to his horror, he realized that the green light coming through Bellatrix's wand was advancing.
"Sirius! HOLD ON!" James yelled, but he was already fighting off two Death Eaters from the other end of the alley, one of them wormtail. He couldn't reach Sirius on time.
"How could you, Peter! We were your brothers!" James yelled. "We were brothers!"
Peter said nothing, fighting him.
Sirius was losing the battle.
Bellatrix's green light was reaching him, getting closer.
Sirius couldn't fight it anymore.
A tear left the corner of his eyes, sweat over his forehead. It was over. This was it.
"STAY AWAY FROM MY BROTHER!" Regulus's sound came roaring, and in a flash of line, he had knocked out Bellatrix in an explosion. Her body fell to the floor.
Sirius was out of breath, almost falling to the ground, his knees barely handling his weight.
Regulus grinned at him. "Not scared, are you?"
Sirius smirked back, doing everything in his might to stand up straight again. "Oh, shut up."
They both rushed forward, joining the battle once more.
The house-elves of Hogwarts had Apparated, lead by Kreacher, screaming and waving carving knives and cleaver. Kreacher's bullfrog's voice audible even above this din: "Fight! Fight! Fight for my Master, defender of house-elves! Fight the Dark Lord, in the name of Regulus! Fight!"
They were hacking and stabbing at the ankles and shim of Death Eaters their tiny faces alive with malice.
Diana and Marlene had sighted the Death Eaters who had killed Layla. Their rage knew no limit as they avenged them, knocking out the Death Eaters, tying them with an invisible wand. Death would've been a mercy to them. They deserved the Dementor's kiss.
But Diana stopped in her tracks when from afar she saw Evan Rosier, dueling Remus. She suddenly remembered her old vision; Remus's dead body lying on the ground, the rain pouring, Rosier standing above him.
"Curcio!" Rosier yelled and Remus's body fell to the ground, the sound of his screams tearing through the air.
"NO!" Diana shrieked, running forward. She couldn't let that happen. She couldn't lose Remus. Not tonight. Not ever.
Rosier laughed when he saw her running forward. "If it isn't my favorite couple."
He began to throw spells. Diana tried blocking them, but she was no match to his Dark Arts, and Remus was still weak, still trying to get up to his feet. But that was when Regulus appeared behind them. Rosier was outnumbered. There was no fate for him other than defeat.
Moody was fighting against five Death Eaters, and so was Professor McGonagall. But she screamed when Alastor's body fell to the floor. But she couldn't stop fighting.
It was Dumbledore that the whole army was going after, but even though they were fifty to one, they were still no match.
But everyone froze as Voldemort finally appeared, raised his wand and another jet of green light streaked at Dumbledore, who turned and was gone in a whirling of his cloak. Next second, he had reappeared behind Voldemort and waved his wand towards the fallen bricks of the ruined houses flying them towards Voldemort. With a swish of his wand, Voldemort turned them into dust.
"This is the end, Tom," said Dumbledore. "Accept your fate."
"My fate is power! Yours is death!" spat Voldemort. He sent another curse at Dumbledore but missed, instead hitting the house nearby, which burst into flame.
Dumbledore flicked his own wand, reaching Voldemort's killing curse at the same time. The bang was like a cannon blast, and the flames that erupted between them, marked the point where the spells collided. And in an explosion, Voldemort's wand flew out of his hand, and as the world fell silent, Voldemort's body began to evaporate.
Voldemort was dead. This time for good.
