Chapter 127
The order meeting felt like a hazy dream, like it was quite unreal. Diana always read the Daily Prophet, but the things that were said that night at the order made Diana realize just how worse everything actually was in the Wizarding world.
Rumors of the Dark Lord reaching out to Dark creatures. Talk of unimaginable dark magic and tortures. Moles and spies in the Ministry of Magic. Many Muggle deaths that weren't even mentioned in the Daily Prophet.
It all made Diana shiver in fear. But none of these were as surprising as how the people in that room were so simply ready to sacrifice their lives. It was shocking how fearless they had become.
Diana even flinched the first few times they actually spoke Voldemort's name.
Throughout the meeting, Diana kept feeling Remus's glance on her on many occasions, trying to see how she was doing. A part of him expected to look at her and see the look of regret on her face.
But Diana didn't seem regretful at all. In fact, for the first time in her life, as she looked around the room, she felt like she was finally part of something bigger than herself. And somehow, by some miracle, she felt safe. Maybe it was all the familiar faces surrounding her, maybe it was because she was seeing her best friend after so long, or maybe it was because of Remus's presence; of that familiar scent of chocolate, or the way he held her hand other the table, giving it a comforting squeeze from time to time.
Dumbledore told Diana that there was no need for her to go on any missions just yet, though he insisted that her and Remus should move out of the Lupin's house, because now the chances of one of them being tracked to that house had doubled and that could put Lyall and Hope in a more dangerous situation.
By tomorrow morning, Remus and Diana had already moved out of the Lupin's house. Remus hated this idea, because his mother felt rather sick and he didn't want to leave her and go, but it seemed like they had no other choice.
"My dad won't be able to look after her. He'll be at the Ministry all day," Remus sighed, placing the last box inside their new home.
It was a safe house Dumbledore had prepared for them in the middle of the woods, as to make Remus's transformation easier. It was agreed that once a month, upon the full moon, Diana would leave that day and go to the Potters' place in Godric's Hollow and stay with Lily and James.
James and Lily had gotten married over the past summer. As much as Diana had grown to love them, she wasn't there on their wedding day, seeing as she had been a pretty occupied with her own wedding with Evan Rosier.
Even thinking about it sent shivers down her spine. She couldn't imagine what her life would've been like with that cruel man.
For one, instead of living inside a crooked house in the middle of woods, she would've been living in a manor, with servant elves attending to their house and dinners all day long. She would be obligated to wear fancy gowns and throw fancy parties for pureblood witches and wizards. She would be forced to bear him pureblooded children.
She was now much happier here, where she was free to live and free to love, and there was a tuck of hope in her heart that after this war was over, everything would get better.
"Everything would get better once this is all over," said Remus, as if reading Diana's thoughts. He looked at her with hopeless, miserable eyes. "Wouldn't it?"
Diana gave him a sad smile. "Yes. It would." She then took out her wand, giving him a teasing grin. "How about we give this place a makeover?"
Remus returned a sweet smile, though his eyes looked more tired than usual. "Let's go for it."
Taking out his wand as well, they began magically removing all their stuff from the boxes, floating them around the place, and in a matter of minutes turned the house into a home. Diana had even brought a few plants, flowers, and floating candles to make the place look more lively.
It had started raining by the time Diana and Remus had begun preparing a very late lunch, sitting by the small, round wooden table and eating it together with some butterbeer.
"Are you cold?" Remus asked Diana when he saw the goosebumps on her hands and arms, while they were cleaning off the kitchen table.
"I don't know, not really." Diana shrugged, looking down at her hands. She wasn't cold exactly cold even though she was wearing a top and shorts, with her long woolen socks which always kept her magically warm.
"Well, let me get you a sweater anyways," said Remus, walking into their bedroom and coming back with one of his own sweaters.
Diana couldn't help but smile as he handed it to her. "Thanks," she said, going on her tiptoes to peck him on the lips before putting the sweater on.
"I'll set up the fire, too," said Remus, walking toward their living room's fireplace and kneeling before it. "It might get colder later. It's supposed to rain all night long."
"Alright! I'll make us some hot chocolate, then."
By the time Remus had set the fire aflame, Diana walked into the tiny living room with two cups of hot chocolate in hand and a few marshmallows inside it. She sat down on the rug by the fireplace beside Remus, handing him one of the cups. The sun was almost setting, and the rain was still pouring. They drank in silence, watching the flames dance.
Remus suddenly snorted with laughter.
Diana gave him a look, setting her mug aside. "What?"
"You've got chocolate all over your mouth," he sniggered, pointing at her lips.
Diana smirked, raising a brow at him. And then in a quick motion she leaped forward and kissed him hard on lip, getting all the chocolate on him. "Do you still find this funny?"
Remus laughed hard, licking the chocolate off from his lips. "Oh, you started a very dangerous game, love."
Diana squales as Remus tackled her to the ground and began to tickle her. She was roaring with laughter, tears in her eyes, begging him for mercy, but he wasn't listening. So she raised her head and bit his lower lip.
"Ouch!" Remus winces, stopping in his tracks. An evil smile forming on his lips, he grabbed her wrists and pinned her hands on the floor above her head a leaned down, kissing her lips hard.
Diana suddenly felt her whole body going numb underneath his weight, kissing him back. As soon as he loosened his grip on her wrists, Diana ran her hands through his soft brown hair, pulling his face closer to hers.
The kiss began to grow rougher, more desperate, his body grinding down on her, making her grown in impatience. Every inch of her skin felt like it was on fire.
She felt his fingertips crawl underneath her sweater, tracing upward. A moan left her parted lips.
But then, suddenly, Remus pulled his face away from hers.
Diana opened her eyes in confusion to see what was going on, only to see a frown on his face. His expression was odd, she couldn't figure it out, couldn't understand it.
"Is that everything okay?" she asked, but Remus didn't answer. "Remus?"
Diana winced when she felt a sharp pain in her shoulder, just like whenever she had a vision. It was like a warning.
"Remus? Is everything okay?" Diana repeated in worry, watching him move away from her, his whole body beginning to shake.
The realization hit her in an instant.
Diana turned her head toward the window, and that was when she saw it. The full moon, rising beneath the clouds of grey, still pouring rain.
She began to breathe heavily in horror, stumbling as she tried to get up to her feet. Remus was on the ground, body shaking furiously, howling in pain, his body transforming into a beast. Into the monster he kept hiding within him all month, concealed.
And then, where Remus was sitting moments ago, now lay a grey werewolf.
"No... no..." Diana was whispering under her breath in fright. The house was drowned in silence. Without moving, without making a single sound, Diana looked around for her wand. She couldn't see it anywhere, fear striking her skin like needles.
She jumped when the wolf made a sudden movement, still lying on the ground, eyes closed, in pain.
Diana finally saw her wand, all over across the living room and in the kitchen, right on the table. But she had to walk past him. Holding her breath in, eyes on the beast, Diana slowly began to step away, her heart hammering across her chest.
But then, the wooden floor creaked underneath her foot, causing the werewolf's head to shot up. Diana froze on the spot, her body shivering in fear as the werewolf rose, three times as large, taking slow steps toward her.
Knowing there was no way now she could walk across the werewolf to get to the kitchen and grab her wand, Diana abruptly turned and began to run out the door, slamming it close.
Thunders roared above her as she ran, the rain soaking her wet. She screamed in horror when she heard a loud crashing noise behind ber. Glancing back, she saw the werewolf had broken through the wooden door running after her.
She began running unto the woods as if her life depended on it, because it did. The ground was buddy and sloppy, but it all happened when her foot got stuck on a branch, causing her to hurtle over the muddy ground.
She turned around in horror, her back still on the ground, tears streaming down her eyes when she saw the werewolf reached her, only a feet away. She knew her fate. There was more point in running down.
She cried, eyes watery, the rain pouring over them mercilessly. "Remus... p-please..."
She stuttered out the words as the beast neared her, now standing above her, growling in fury and hunger.
She looked into its eyes.
This wasn't Remus.
"Please..." she muttered, tears rushing down, but there was no use. She closed her eyes, awaiting her fate.
And then, in a split moment right before the world went dark to her eyes, she screamed in pain as his sharp teeth dug into her shoulder.
