Chapter 07
The next morning, Diana was forced awake when someone pulled the blanket off her head, the morning light hitting her eyes like a trigger.
"Rise and shine, gorgeous!" Layla said cheerfully. "It's morning! The sun is out!"
Diana groaned from her bed. "So? I'm not a plant!"
Layla laughed, shaking her head. "Just get up, will you? We don't wanna miss breakfast on our first day."
With high difficulty, Diana tried to sit up straight on her bed, looking around the dormitory. The other girls were already gone, and Layla looked as beautiful as ever; she had already showered, used the Sleekeazy's Hair Potion on her elegant afro, and was changed into her new Hogwarts robes and skirt.
Unlike Layla, Diana felt too lazy to take showers early in the morning, and she much rather do it in the night. So, she forced herself out of bed and got ready so they could go down to the Great Hall for some breakfast, and also to get their class schedules from Professor Slughorn.
"What class do you think we have first?" Layla mused as the two girls stepped out of their dorm.
"Let's hope it's not History of Magic," said Diana. "I'll fall asleep in the first five minutes."
"I thought you liked History of Magic."
"I do find the subject fascinating. Just not when it's taught by Professor Binns. If there was an award for the most boring class in the world, he would win in a heartbeat," she said with a grin as they walked down the staircase and toward the common room.
"Agreed." Layla laughed. "In our first year, I used to think it was so cool that our teacher was a ghost. It took me less than an hour to realize he was the complete opposite of —"
Layla was saying, but she came to a stop when Evan Rosier stepped in front of them as they entered the common room, blocking their way.
"Hey, girls," said Evan, smirking.
"Well, well! If that isn't the face I dreamt of seeing early in the morning!" Diana said sarcastically, giving him a fake sweet smile.
"Did you dream of me last night too?" Evan winked at her, and Diana had to hold herself back from making a puking sound.
"Tell me something, Evan," Diana started, walking slowly closer to him, "do you want to have kids in the future?"
"That depends. With who?" Evan's grin widened as he neared her as well, their faces only inches apart. "If it's you, then sure."
"Good," Diana smiled, but it disappeared completely the next moment as she said, "then if you want to be able to have kids, get out of my way before I kick you in the nuts."
Evan's smirk disappeared into a scowl as the people around them sniggered and laughed. With a triumphant grin on her lips, Diana left the common room along with Layla.
"I'm so glad that the dickhead isn't in any of our classes. Otherwise I would've ended up on Azkaban years ago," said Diana as they walked out of the dungeons.
"Thankfully he's a seventh year. We only have to tolerate him for one more year, and then he'll be out of our lives forever."
"Amen to that."
"You know," Layla started as they made their way up the marble staircase and toward the entrance hall, "one of these days Rosier would give up flirting with you and pay you back."
Diana scoffed. "I would like to see him try."
"I would like to see him try, too." Layla nodded with amusement.
Soon after the two girls joined the rest of the students at the Slytherin table and started with their breakfast, Professor Slughorn walked up to them to hand them their class schedules.
"Thank you, Professor," said Layla, getting the small piece of parchment from him.
Layla was always extra polite with him, knowing well that Slughorn had many connections in the Wizarding community, so he would be the perfect person to introduce her to important people. She'd always been an ambitious girl when it came to her future goals.
"I expect I'll be arranging a supper soon, Miss Miller," said Slughorn. "Surely I'll be seeing you there as always?"
"Of course, sir." Layla nodded brightly.
"Wonderful! Wonderful!" Slughorn beamed at the two of them before moving along to hand the schedules to the other students.
"You should have tried to get in the Slug Club last year when he offered it to you too. Your family's a part of the sacred 28. Slughorn will let you join in a heartbeat if you ever change your mind," Layla told Diana. "You have to see the shelf in his office. It's filled with the most successful witches and wizards you've ever heard of."
"The dinner parties and suppers sounds too dull." Diana shuddered at the thought. "I can't sit in a room with more than five people in it and be forced to make conversation."
"An hour of conversation can be really helpful in the future, if it means Slughorn introducing me to celebrated Potioneers."
Diana wanted to reply, but her focus was lost when her eyes fell on the class schedule which Slughorn had given him.
"I've got Ancient Runes right now," she observed.
"I've got..." Layla looked down at her parchment. "Muggle Studies."
"Are you done with breakfast?" Diana asked. "Ancient Runes' classroom is all the way in the West Tower. It'll take so long to get there. I'll be late if I don't go now."
"No, I'm not done yet," Layla responded, pouring herself another full glass of fresh pumpkin juice. "Why don't you go on without me?"
"All right." Diana got to her feet, throwing her backpack over her shoulder. "See you later."
But before she could leave, Layla stopped her by calling after her, "Wait!"
Diana turned around to face her again. "What?"
Layla then took a toast, raising it for Diana to take. "Here. Eat it along the way. You barely had anything for breakfast."
Diana grinned. "What are you? My mother?"
"No. But I only have one little brother." Layla winked at her.
Diana couldn't help but to laugh. Layla always referred to her as 'her little brother', mostly because of how Diana was protective toward her and the way she behaved, or how she kept going to detention back in their first few years for punching people.
Diana and Layla hadn't been friends since the beginning of their Hogwarts journey. Even though they shared a dormitory, they barely talked to each other. But things changed back in their third year.
It was their second Hogsmeade trip. Diana was walking down the village with a book in hand when she saw Layla there with another boy. The two were on a date, but just then, Diana saw the boy trying to kiss Layla, even though she clearly didn't want to.
Feeling the anger surge from within her, Diana dropped her book and leaped forward, punching the boy in the face.
The boy tried fighting back, but he was surprised at how strong Diana was. The other students gathered around quickly at the sound of shouts and screams, trying to separate them.
Diana got detention for a week afterward. Although, she didn't seem to mind. Because while the boy ended up with a bloody nose, Diana ended up with an unbreakable friendship with Layla after that day.
"Thanks." Diana finally took the toast from her Layla, knowing there was no point in arguing with her.
"See ya," Layla waved at her as Diana turned to leave, taking a bite of the toast once she left the Great Hall.
On her way to the West Tower, Diana was surprised that her thought kept wandering toward a certain boy with sandy hair and chocolate brown eyes. She was glad that she hadn't seen Remus in the Great Hall, and even more glad that she wasn't going to see him until their Potions class which the Slytherins shared with Gryffindors.
He probably slept in, Diana thought to herself bitterly, thinking of why he wasn't present at the Great Hall for breakfast.
When Diana finally reached the West Tower, she was already slightly panting from all the walking she had done to get herself to this side of the castle. She was relieved to see the Ancient Runes' classroom from afar, and so she walked onward.
But Diana came to a halt the moment she entered through the door, only to see Remus Lupin sitting in the front seat, taking his books out of his backpack and neatly placing them on the desk in front of him.
