Chapter 9: Explanation

Y/N POV

"Well, I know you are, but Sun, are you familiar with the White Fang?" I ask.

"Of course! I don't think there's a Faunus on the planet who hasn't heard of them. Stupid, holier-than-thou creeps that use force to get whatever they want. Bunch of freaks, if you ask me!" He replies as I see Blake tense up.

"Well, do you know motorsports? more specifically stock car racing?" I ask him.

"Yeah, I never cared for it that much, but I've heard about it." He replies.

I pull the small toy car out of my pocket and lay it on the table.

"I raced for a while, and this is me." I say pointing to the car.

"Wait, you're R/N?" Blake asks wide eyed.

"Yeah, and look on the side." I point to the logo, "That's how I know you, I raced for the white fang,"

She hums in acknowledgement as she seems to be trying to remember when she saw me, I remembered immediately

*Flashback*

Back in good old South Mistral, Me, Ravio, and Carroll were just in the garage cleaning up after a series of races. Our car had damn near fallen apart during the last one, and we had a week to get it back to brand new condition for the next series of races. putting the tarp over my car I heard the door open behind me.

"I'm sorry sir we're closed today." I say instinctually.

"Now is that any way to talk to your sponsor?" I hear a hearty deep voice say.

I look behind me to see my good friend Ghira Belladonna, and a small cat faunas next to him.

"Good to see you Ghirardelli." I say giving him a handshake.

"You keep calling me that, and I may start reconsidering our sponsorship." He replies strangely serious.

"Come on, we both know I'm just joking, by the way who's the girl you brought with you." I ask.

"Oh, her, that's my daughter, Blake Belladonna," He replies gesturing her to walk forward.

"Y/N" I reply.

I reach out my hand and she shakes it almost timidly, after letting go Ghira got back to me.

"Hey, great couple races this week, I really want to know, how do you do i-" He started before he was cut off.

His scroll started ringing, and he picked it up.

"Hello ... What?! ... Why wasn't I made aware earlier? ... Okay I'll be there as soon as possible." We hear him say before he goes off of it and rushes outside.

"Hey, can you watch over Blake for a couple hours," Ghira said while running out the door.

I was about to respond, but I was cut off by him saying "Thanks I'll see you then."

He speeds off leaving a ton of dirt in his wake as I looked back to see Blake.

Blake POV

When dad said he was going to show me our handpicked promoter I didn't know what to expect. I certainly didn't expect this, person. Starting from the obvious the man was extremely short, he could only be 1.5 meters tall max, and he was human. I didn't think that we'd ever have a human help us, let alone one helping willingly. Another was that of all the things he could be, a politician, a journalist, or an intellectual he was a race car driver who had a white fang sticker and talked about us in interviews. Him and his 2 other friends in a run down garage in the middle of nowhere. To say I was shocked would be putting it lightly, I didn't know what to think.

"Hey, so, I guess I'm not what you expected." Y/N said to me sounding almost disappointed in himself.

"You could say that." I reply.

"Look, I'm sorry, I know I'm not some intellectual, politician, or some big name celebrity. But I do believe in your cause, a lot of people here down south do." He says saddened.

Now I'm feeling bad for him, he's really beating himself up for it.

Y/N POV

Her father probably built me up to be some great smooth-talking promoter of freedom and equality. I don't blame her for being disappointed that it was just some short race car driver. She probably wanted to see a politician, a writer, an educated man, not some racer in the backwoods of Mistral.

"Hey, um, kid, you, wanna meet my crew?" I ask weakly

"That would be nice." She replies while she follows me into the garage.

Ravio and Carroll stop what they're doing and look up to me.

"Well, hello, uhh..." Carroll says.

"Blake," She replies.

"Carroll, Carroll Yunick." He replies extending his arm.

"Ravio Finley," Ravio says extending his arm as well.

"Carroll's my crew chief, and Ravio's my resource manager." I say to her.

She shakes both their hands almost as timidly as she shook mine.

"So, I take it you're Ghira's daughter." Carroll said to her.

"Yes, I'm Blake Belladonna." She replies.

We stay in silence, after a while. Carroll and Ravio return to what they were doing earlier.

"Say kid, wanna see the car?" I say putting on a smile.

She hums in approval and I bring her to the garage. Instead of some high class garage it was just cold concrete and wood, dirt and grime was still all over the floor, a spilled can of motor oil was in the corner, tools lied about haphazardly, and overall the place was a mess. Looking at her face, she didn't look too impressed, can't blame her. Walking over I pull off the tarp, and her expression quickly changes into one of amazement, I can't blame her, this is probably the first time she's seen a head turner, and especially one as good as my glorious F/C D/C.

"Wow," She said in astonishment.

"I knew you'd like it." I say smiling.

She walks over to the car and starts checking out every inch.

this really is her first head turner

I call her over and pop the hood to show her the engine. Big block racing engine, absolutely beautiful. She's enamored, but then I think of one thing, something I should have done from the start really.

"Wanna go on a ride?" I ask opening the door.

She hops in faster than I can see as I mosey my way in and strap on my harness. With both of us strapped in I start the engine, and she seems startled by the super loud sound.

"Straight pipes are the best." I say to her laughing as I start pulling out.

Driving around on the old backwoods' dirt roads she was loving it, the speed, the power, and I was smiling all the way as well. We finally hit the town, and she looked out the window noticing Faunas and humans, together.

"Most your protests are north, but down south here, we're pretty accepting of the Faunas." I say noticing her confusion.

She hums in acknowledgement and I continue on my path. Finally I find the place I'm looking for, Mount Kaga. I check one more time to see if she's fully strapped in.

"Let me show you what your father pays me to do." I say to her.

Realization setting in, her face becomes excited and terrified. Looking to the road ahead of me, this road I've driven hundreds of times, I brake and the car stands still. Shifting it into first gear I look to the road in front of me. Pressing down the gas pedal we beam ahead.

First turn I took easy, but fast enough that the tires screeched on the pavement. Screaming ahead I take the second turn much of the same way. During the entire ordeal Blake was screaming terrified. Coming around the third turn she looks forward terrified.

"Where is the road?" She yells.

"No road, just dirt." I reply as I kick the clutch into the first hairpin.

There were around 8 hairpins left, I take each one at a time, each one drifting into the turn as tight as possible. I was riding high, clutch drifting turns 3 4 and 6 while using my handbrake on 2, 5, and 7. Finally I came up on the final couple turns for this I needed to pull off a reverse entry and immediately line up a normal handbrake turn. Doing this slow wasn't too difficult, but I wasn't one for doing things slow. Only problem was it was less than a second window to pull if off, and if I screwed it up, well let's just say there's a reason why the place below is called car crash gulch.

"Why are you speeding up!?" She asks terrified.

I steeled my nerves and pulled on the handbrake, at just the the right time as well. My car was able to push itself backwards and I completed the reverse entry. Now onto the handbrake drift, quickly flicking it I get my tail to push out and start the counter steer. Completing the turn it was all smooth sailing from there. Just one big straight upwards and it was over. Parking up at the top I pulled the handbrake and turned off the car.

Walking out, well more in Blake's case running out I take a moment to admire the view from the top.

"It's very nice ain't it Blake?" I ask.

She bends over a fence and starts puking, quite honestly I'm surprised this didn't happen earlier.

"Oh, um, sorry kid." I say walking over to her.

She gets done with her vomiting session and looks back to me.

"It's okay," She replies as she wipes the residue off her mouth, "It was fun."

"I'm glad it was, and say kid, since you lost your lunch, how about I get you some, just step in the car and I promise to drive smooth." I say.

"Stop calling me kid, I'm 14." She replies somewhat annoyed.

"Well then, you're not much older than me, because I'm 14 too, sorry about that kid." I reply snickering. As she punched me on my shoulder, quite forcefully.

She gets back in the car and as I promised I drive smoothly, down the mountain she has time to see the scenery without being terrified. Also as I promised I grabbed her lunch at Mozano's Restaurant, and by the time we were done I came back to the garage to see Ghira was there.

"Hey Ghira." I say.

He glares daggers at me. I suddenly realize what it's about.

"Hey don't worry, I just took her for a drive, showed her what you pay me for." I say as solidly as possible.

The look didn't fade, instead it looked like it intensified.

"Dad, it's okay, he's telling the truth." Blake says walking up to him.

The look had waned and I never felt more relieved in my life.

"You should have seen the look on your face." Ghira says with a hearty laugh.

"You mean you're not mad?" I ask.

"Mad, no, you're a good man, I know you wouldn't do a thing to her." He replies before pulling me into a bear hug.

Eventually it settled down and it was time for them to go. Ghira ran out to his car while Blake stayed behind for a second.

"Hey, you best get going out." I say pointing to the car.

"Y/N, I just want to say, you may not have been a politician, or some big name celebrity, but I think you're a good guy, and I think you're truly just what we need." She says before walking off.

I pause for a bit, I'm not really used to being complimented, usually my sister is the one with all the praise. I look back to see her halfway out the door.

"Blake, thanks, that means, quite a lot to me." I reply.

She hums in acknowledgement and continues to the car.

*flashforward*

"You remember now?" I ask Blake.

"Yes, I do, you made me puke." She replies.

I look at her perplexed.

"Of all the things to remember from that ordeal, of all the fancy driving I did, that's what you remember?" I ask.

"Well I remember that made me puke." She replies annoyed. "But still, it gave me context, you truly earned your title." She says looking down the toy car.

On the back there was a little bit of decal that read "DRIFT KING"

"Well, that's that, now, your explanation." Sun said looking to Blake.

"Right, Onto that.
