♡⎯⎯ Pretty Impressive, Huh?

★ kee speaks this au is my beloved, i had a lot of fun writing it. it's a miss peregrine's home for peculiar au with them + katie. their loop is not one jacob visited, it's one i made up and it was  made in the early 2000's. spoilers for conference of the birds. the stolls' peculiarity is the ability to reach through walls, kind of like kitty pryde from x-men; and they still have the lock manipulation. y/n has photokinesis. contains: swearing, blood, violence and spoilers

My ribcage seemed to want to burst out of my torso. My hands were sweaty and shaking. The front door was cracking, and the bad men were about to get in.

Bad men. Very bad men. I had already seen them kill my best friend, Tania. The last time I saw her was when she was sprawled on the ground, blood gushing out of her neck, soaking the Queen shirt she had worn. The illusions that she had set up to keep the bad men out were fading. The tall grass was beginning to turn transparent, showing the true gravel in front of our house. Fear was forever encased in her gray eyes, which had begun to turn back into their usual brown.

The bangs filled my ears. The bangs seemed to shake my head as well. The bangs scared me. They sounded like something else-something bigger and stronger than a person, peculiar or normal-was pounding on the door.

I had no idea who the bad men were. After all, I had only discovered that I was a peculiar 5 weeks ago. They explained everything to me, the loops, the ymbrynes, all that. But I didn't know who the bad men were, only that they killed my best friend and wanted Katie.

What did this have to do with Katie Gardner? Our ymbryne, Miss Heron had made us gather in the living room and told us that something bad was happening in another part of America, and they were looking for someone like Katie, who had the ability to make plants grow at her will. I remember seeing Travis discreetly gripping her hand as Miss Heron explained. We had to keep our guard up and to be aware. But how could you prepare yourself for something you know absolutely nothing about?

Connor, my friend and the younger brother of Katie's boyfriend, had a rope soaked in a flammable substance tied to one of the hooks on the opposite wall in one hand and the other on my shoulder. "Travis, take Katie! Go! Ready, Y/N?"

"I-I-I don't know. I might mess up." I stared at my fingers and got so nervous the light actually flickered. The door leading into the main part of the house slammed shut as Travis and Katie exited the room.

"Hey." He said, and I spun around. "You don't know and you might mess up, but it's worth a try."

I don't know what or how it happened, but he seemed to have passed something onto me, focusing on my eyes with his own blue ones. Something in my chest fluttered, then stood tall and determined.

I nodded. "Yeah, I'm ready."

I took a little bit of the light from the fluorescent light above me, turning it into a hand to open the front door. I could hear Pedro Trevino seal the door with a layer of diamonds. Connor brought him through the wall.

The door finally gave way and crumbled before I could use the giant glowing hand. Several men came in, and I panicked and the hand collapsed. It scattered like water splashing around, curling around legs and bouncing off reflective surfaces. I heard Connor yelp.

"Sorry, Con!" I waved my hands wildly, not knowing what to do. I panted, then returned to my senses, gathering the wisps of white again. I was unsteady at first, some of it spilling out of the big white orb.

One of the men lunged at me, and I nearly released the light again.

Whack!

Someone flashed in front of me and I realized Connor had thrown a right hook right at the man. I stared at him, wide-eyed. "Connor..."

"Pretty impressive, huh?" He smirked, trying to hide the fact that he was rubbing his knuckles, which were growing red. He outstretched his hand towards the door, and there was a series of loud clicks as the bolts locked shut.

The ball of light was getting heavier. "You're not supposed to let go of the rope, you cocky little shit!"

"Oi, look, it's a photokinetic! She might do us some good along with the earthworker. Y'still got the chloroform?"

"Y/N, I think you should start throwing that now." Connor murmured, nudging me.

I cursed under my breath, lifting the ball of light. It's heavier than you think, trust me.

One of the men sneered, taking out a gun. "Aw, is the little girl tired?"

Connor only seemed to notice it after making a quick remark. "Go and fuck a block of spam!"

The man and the others raised their guns and what happened in the next 3 seconds still confused me because of how much happened. I threw the ball of light, then stretched out my fingers to make a kind of helmet around their heads, blinding them with the light. Some of them dropped their guns and swatted the air blindly, most of them pulled the trigger, filling my head with bangs and making me jump. Connor flinched, then looped his arm around my waist and pulled both of us through the wall, keeping one hand on the rope and the other arm around me.

I've gone through walls with Connor or Travis before, but this time I didn't have time to hold my breath. I felt like all the oxygen was cut out for a second or two, and what was even worse was that I felt another hand grab my clothes. A jolt of fear went through me, making me gasp and panic even more.

My knees ached, and I realized I had stumbled on the ground, coughing. I wanted to lie down after using my powers for that long, but Connor held my face and told me to get up.

"Con—someone caught me—" I panted, then stopped, seeing the fingers sticking out of the wall. They were shaking and someone on the other side of the wall was yelling, "My hand! My hand's stuck in the damn wall!"

Our other friends stood frozen, backed up against the other end of the room with their belongings in their arms. A little Korean girl we called Min—our fire-starter—shoved tall Connor aside.

"Move!" She slapped her small pale hand against the rope sticking out of the concrete and immediately it caught fire, hopefully spreading to the other room which Connor locked and Pedro sealed, trapping the men inside it.

I clutched Connor's arm as he asked the others if Katie and Travis had gotten out. My head spun with exhaustion. "Stay away from the windows, children!" Miss Heron cried.

"Y/N!" Connor yelled. I found myself being snatched out of the window by some invisible slimy...thing. It was like a snake, but snakes can't be that putrid yet that tall. I was 10 feet in the air. Something was growling under me, and as it rumbled, the thing around my waist that carried me vibrated as well. I screamed, trying desperately to form a weapon out of the fading light, but nothing was happening.

Another one of those things wrapped around my neck and my breath caught in my throat. I clawed at it, scratched the slimy thing, tried to dig my fingers in it, but it tightened anyway. It was starting to hurt. My airways were being crushed. I could hear muffled screams and shouts. Is this it? I thought. Then I blacked out, and I was sure it wasn't death.

I had a horrible nightmare. It started out innocent, with me sneaking out of the loop and finding that my family had moved nearby. I thought they would be happy to see me, but they frowned and yelled at me. When I opened my mouth to speak they all dropped to the floor, then began shaking violently, frothing at the mouth. Look what you've done, a voice hissed. Look what you've done!

I ran back to our loop, earning a gash from one of the branches of a tree. When I arrived, no one was there. I got to the backyard and what I saw there made my stomach flip. All of them, my friends, hung in the air, floating with gray faces and blood spilling out of their gaping mouths. I cried, too scared to scream. Suddenly I felt like I was being pulled out of water.

Cloth was balled in my fists as I clawed at it, whimpering. I finally calmed down after realizing I was somewhere else, in a long room with many white hospital beds lined on each side. A figure was sitting on the bed beside mine. I shook my head and saw that it was Connor. I called his name.

He looked up, grinning, and I saw that he had a scratch on his cheek. "She has finally awoken!" He said dramatically, but I saw the tiredness in his eyes.

"Where are we, Con? And what are you wearing?" I asked. Scanning him up and down, he had different clothes on. He wore a white, long sleeved button up with a tie, and long black pants. Dear God, where was he going? I saw a line of maroon near his elbow and another one near his stomach.

He laughed. "I didn't choose the clothes, alright? But I had to change so they gave me this. At least I'm not wearing a giant eyeglass cleaner."

I looked down and saw that I was wearing a blue-grey hospital gown, with uneven sleeves, short at the front and long at the back. "Yeah, whatever. You look like my cousin Kevin at my stepdad and mom's wedding."

"Who?"

"Nevermind. But where are we?"

"A hospital in the 1920's which is also a loop. This is where they sleep. You passed out and fell."

It was true. When I looked around I saw belongings on the other beds—photos, clothes, stuffed toys, notebooks—and I wondered where my own things were. "How long since we left our loop?"

"An hour."

"What?!" I shot up, but crumpled, feeling as if my organs were screaming.

"Y/N, don't get up! You fell pretty badly and used way too much of your powers."

"Then how has it been an hour?"

"I was joking. We left there a day ago, then we found this loop. Travis and Katie got away. They went through a secret passage and are on their way to another loop in California. We thought it would be better if they hid somewhere or throw the bad guys off their trail."

I nodded blankly. "What happened there?" I glanced at the red lines.

"Oh. A few bullets got to us when we were going through the wall, but we weren't actually shot. Just...grazed? I think that's the word. Remember? You have one on your leg, too."

Suddenly it all came back to me. The helmets of light. The wall. The rope, the thing snatching me out of the window, Miss Heron shouting instructions, Connor telling someone to fuck a block of Spam. I burst out laughing at that one.

"What?" Connor asked.

I shook my head. "N-nothing."

"I want to know!" He whined, plopping down beside me and taking my hand.

"Fine! You really, actually told someone to fuck a block of Spam?"

"Yes."

I looked down to where he held my hand, and saw the three scars on the back of my palm. I remembered how I got them. Tania and I made confetti out of old magazines, and we ended up getting a lot of paper cuts. I got three on my hand and Tania got three on her shoulder. I told her not to wear tank tops after that, but she laughed it off and wore them again anyway. The scars looked like hearts, two white lines in a V-shape and the line on top dipping down in the middle, and we had one each.

"This is the declaration of our friendship!" She laughed. "All hail the Confetti of 3 Weeks of Friendship!"

Connor caught me staring at my hand and bumped my shoulder. "Anything wrong, Y/N?"

"Tania," I said quietly. "Is she really...gone?"

"Well...yeah. I'm sorry, Y/N. I can leave you alone, if you need space or anything."

"No, please." I squeezed his hand. "Stay with me, please?"

"Sure."

"Can we do anything to help? In whatever's happening, I mean?"

"I don't know. They aren't telling us anything. Miss Heron's gone, too, so the closest thing we have to her right now is the demi-ymbryne at the front desk. She tells us it's better we don't know."
