Chapter 4

"I must say, this is certainly the best water I've ever had," Fred told them all as he took a sip.

"Glad there's something good to come from this situation," Alex replied.

"Hey, don't sweat it," Crazy Dave piped up as he kept driving forward. "Wasn't it fun fighting all of those zombies back in the day? Just nonstop fighting and improving our skill?"

"Yeah, but that was different," Josie commented. "Back then, Zomboss didn't have a personal vendetta against us. Now? I can't think of a reason why he'll go easy on us."

"Plus, we have someone else to take care of, now," Alex added as he looked at his daughter, who was sitting down as Sunflower was telling her a story.

"She'll be fine," Peashooter told him with reassurance. "With amazing parents looking out for her, and all."

"Thanks, Pea," Josie told him, "but we're still going to be concerned as long as Zomboss wants us dead."

"Which, at this point, will be when he's dead, himself," Fred noted as he refilled his glass.

"And he's a zombie, so good luck with him having a natural death," Alex sighed.

"So why don't we kill him?" Peashooter asked.

Everyone suddenly went silent, save for Sunflower and her storytelling.

"I'm sorry?" Josie asked.

"I mean, won't that take care of half of our problem? Just kill Zomboss?"

The Johnsens all looked at each other in thought.

"Well, I guess I've just thought he acted so human that I forgot he's still a zombie," Alex commented.

"And it would make us safer..." Josie added as she looked back at Emma.

"Hey, everyone!" Dave suddenly called out. "Look!"

Everyone then directed their gazes to the windshield, where they could see some small buildings in front of them.

"What is that, some sort of village?" Fred asked.

"It would appear so," Dave replied.

"Hm. I guess it would be nice to see other people," Alex commented.

"But how exactly are we supposed to communicate with them?" Josie asked. "I don't think they speak English."

"Don't worry; I got that covered," Dave replied as he reached into the glovebox and pulled out what looked like a pair of wireless earbuds.

"Put these in your ears," he explained. "They'll perceive all outside foreign languages as English to the wearer, as well as translate the wearer's English into the foreign language! This should help us communicate with the natives."

"What about our clothes?" Fred asked. "We're not dressed like we belong."

Dave simply replied by pressing a button on PENNY's dashboard and a bright light shone across the van. When it went away, everyone could instantly notice they had changed attire. The men were wearing nothing but a pale cloth skirt bound by rope, and the girls were wearing the same cloth, but as a full dress.

"I'm not sure how I feel about this..." Alex said uncomfortably. "I feel too naked. Some underwear would at least be nice."

"Hey, at least we won't look out of place," Josie replied. "Besides, you don't look bad at all."

"You're not just saying that because you're obligated to, are you?"

"Eh. Maybe a little."

"Alright," Dave told them all. "Put in your earbuds! We're going to introduce ourselves!"

"Well, here goes," Fred said with a deep breath as he opened the side door and exited the vehicle.

"Be safe out there, guys!" Sunflower called out.

"We'll do our best," Alex replied before exiting.

Josie picked up Emma and left the vehicle, as well.

Once all the humans met up outside, they walked towards the village, where they could see people walking around, farming, eating, and plenty of other things you'd expect to see in an Ancient Egyptian village.

"Wow," Josie said in awe as they walked, "it's kinda crazy that we're walking through and witnessing real history!"

"I just wish we could've gotten stranded somewhere that wasn't burning hot," Fred commented as he wiped his forehead.

"You mean like the destination we were supposed to go?" Alex asked as he turned to Dave.

"Sheesh, you make a mistake and strand your friends thousands of years in the past and they'll never let you forget it for one minute," Dave replied with a shake of the head.

"Look, there's nothing we can do about that now," Josie told her husband. "Let's just get through this, then we can go home. I mean, a month isn't that long."

Alex groaned and then remained silent, still upset, but realizing she was right.

Suddenly, Josie felt herself ran into something. Or rather, someone. She looked and saw a dark-haired man in attire similar to Alex's seemingly drop a basket of cheese. Fortunately, it didn't look like a lot fell out.

"Oh, my gosh!" Josie gasped. "I'm so sorry!"

"No worries, Miss," the man replied as he picked the basket back up. "I should've payed attention to where I was going."

He then stared at her confused.

"I haven't seen you before. Or you three gentlemen," he said as he looked at the Johnsens.

"I'm Alex," Alex introduced. "This is my wife, Josie, our daughter Emma, my brother Fred, and our friend Crazy Dave."

"But you can just call me Crazy Dave," Dave added with a proud smile.

"Anyway, we're...uh...travelers," Alex continued.

"Well, I am Tui," the man replied. "Welcome to the village."

"Thank you," Josie replied. "Are you sure you're fine?"

"Of course. I should be on my way, now. Enjoy your stay!"

"Thank you," Fred replied.

"Bye!" Emma told Tui as she waved her hand with a giant grin.

With that, Tui smiled in response and walked past them, continuing on his way.

"So what exactly are we supposed to do in this village, anyway?" Josie asked.

"I'm not entirely...Dave what are you doing?"

The group then turned and saw the lunatic eating one of the dropped pieces of cheese, which was now covered in sand.

"What?" he asked. "How often can you say you've eaten Ancient Egyptian cheese?"

"Don't you think it would taste better if it wasn't so sandy?" Fred asked.

"Eh. I don't mind it."

"Sheesh. You really are cra-"

Suddenly, shrieks could be heard in the village! Everyone ran towards the Johnsens in fear, and it didn't take long to see why; behind the villagers was a hoard of pale-skinned, bandage-wrapped zombies, dressed up like they were mummies.

"Crap! They're here!" Alex called out.

"And they're going to hurt everyone!" Josie gasped.

"Not if I can help it!"

That's when they could hear an engine roaring behind them. They looked and saw PENNY rushing towards them, sliding to a halt behind them.

"Get in!" she told them.

Without question, the humans, rushed inside the RV.

"Activating anti-zombie defense system!"

A large television emerged from the wall, displaying an overhead view of the outside of the RV. They could then see a large 9x5 grid slide out of the bottom of PENNY. Next to the TV emerged a desk with a computer that was displaying a setup similar to the basement computer back home. Finally, a loud beacon blared, causing all the zombies to stare at PENNY and slowly walked towards her.

"Hold up," Fred told Dave. "You mean...?"

"Yep! We can plant Plants right on that grid and defend ourselves!"

"Well, no time to waste, then!" Alex said as he popped his knuckles. "Let's get fighting!"

Alex wasted no time sitting down as Josie scanned their 4 Plants into the computer. Once they were scanned, Alex placed a  Sunflower in the back column, the one closest to the RV. He then saw a sunawatt drop down the sky, which he proceeded to pick up. Using that, he planted another Sunflower. It was at that time when a zombie started to stumble onto the grid.

After quickly collecting enough sunawatts, he planted a Peashooter in the same row the zombie was walking in. The Plant began spitting peas, and it didn't take long for the zombie to go down.

"Huh. They're just as tough as a normal zombie," Fred commented. "I was expecting more."

That's when they all saw a zombie with a different getup approach them. It was still wrapped in bandages like a mummy, but it was wearing a headpiece like that of a pharaoh, as well as holding a gold staff with a sun on the end of it.

"Hm. Nice outfit," Josie said to nobody in particular. "So what's your weird and bizarre gimmick?"

Almost as if on cue, another sunawatt fell from the sky. That's when the zombie stopped walking and its eyes glowed a bright blood red, as well as the sunawatt. It then raised its staff and the sunawatt quickly started moving towards it!

"Hey!" Alex gasped as he quickly tried to click on the sunawatt.

But it was too the late. The sunawatt was absorbed into the staff, the zombie's eyes went back to normal, and it continued to walk forward.

"How interesting!" Dave said as he rubbed his beard. "Maybe we should call this one the Ra Zombie!"

"Oh, I get it!" Josie commented with a smile. "Because Ra is the Ancient Egyptian god of the sun!"

"Wait, it is? I was thinking because it keeps saying 'raaaa'."

"Oh. That works, too, I guess."

While they were talking, Alex continued to plant and fight against zombies. It was only Mummy Zombies and Ra Zombies, so nothing too difficult. He quickly learned, though, that not only can he collect the sunawatt before the Ra Zombie takes it, but if he kills the zombie, the sunawatts that the zombie had stolen fall out of the staff for him to collect! Fortunately, he had Peashooters and Wall-Nuts in every row, so sun wasn't too big of a priority anymore.

Soon, a Mummy Zombie with a road cone on its head approached. Alex planted a Potato Mine in front of the Wall-Nut in the row the zombie was walking on and waited. Soon, the mine activated and the Conehead Mummy stepped on it, blowing it to bits!

It didn't take much longer for all the zombies to stop approaching. Alex sighed with relief and stood up from the seat.

"You know, I was expecting more from Zomboss," he told them all. "Maybe this won't be so hard, after all."

"Let's hope so," Josie told him.

Suddenly, there was a knock on the van door. They all turned to the TV, which still had a live view of outside. They could see a familiar face knocking on the door.

Alex walked to the door and opened it up, revealing the surprised and confused face of Tui on the other side.

"Am I dreaming?" he asked. "Our village was just attacked by mummies, this...thing...you are in appears, and these....things...just killed the mummies!"

Alex gave a nervous chuckle and cleared his throat.

"Uh...remember how I said we were travelers?" he asked.

Tui stared at him silently, waiting to see where this was going.

"Well, I'm not exactly wrong when I say that," Alex continued. "We're...uh...time travelers."

Tui continued to stare at Alex before looking around at PENNY, and then the Plants. He then shook his head in disbelief.

"I really must be dreaming," he mumbled.

"Look, we don't mean to intrude," Josie told him as she appeared in the doorway. "We just accidentally landed here and now we're stuck here for a month. We didn't know that the zom...er, mummies were following us."

"Wait," Tui suddenly said in realization, "you were responsible for that attack?"

"Well," Josie mumbled sheepishly as she rubbed the back of her neck, "not directly. But we kinda pissed off their master and he may or may not want us dead under any circumstance."

"Look," Alex interrupted. "We'll leave the village right now. That way nobody else here can be harmed."

That's when Tui looked past the couple and saw something that caught his eye.

"What is that?" he asked as he pointed behind them.

Alex and Josie turned around and saw Emma sitting on the ground, eating a green round ball.

"That?" Alex asked. "That's a pea."

"A pea? I've never seen one that big before!"

"Well, I guess you could say it's genetically altered," Fred said with a shrug.

"Do you have a lot of those?" Tui asked.

"As many as you need!" Peashooter replied with pride.

Tui replied by giving a short but loud shriek at the sight of the talking Plant.

"What on Earth is that thing??" he asked in fear.

"Long story," Josie replied.

"Why do you ask about having a lot of peas?" Alex asked Tui.

"Well... our village hasn't been having a lot of food recently... our crops have been poor due to the increasing heat..."

"I think I'm seeing what you're getting at," Dave said with a nod. "You want us to draw pictures of ponies and sell them for $1000!"

They all stared at the lunatic with confusion.

"Actually," Josie replied, "I think he wants us to give him food."

"Yes," Tui replied. "That's, uh, what I was getting at."

"Oh. Well, in that case, sure! But I must tell you that making too many peas at once can wear the poor guy out."

"It's true," Peashooter replied. "And I frankly have better things to do that make peas nonstop for hours and hours."

"Like what?" Fred asked.

"Protect you all? Keep your niece entertained? Sit back and be cool?"

"Hm. Fair enough."

"Well, I guess we could stay here and give food to your village," Alex told Tui. "The problem would be the attacks from the zom... I mean, mummies."

"Well, you 4 seemed to handle yourselves pretty well out there," Tui replied with a smug grin. "As long as you don't leave this thing in in the middle of the village, we should be fine. We'll just have to stay inside more often, I suppose."

"Hey, sacrifices must be made, then. Though I'll have to let you know that once we get enough fuel to go back home, we're out of here. That means no more food."

"Fair enough. Hopefully we'll have enough to last by the time you have to leave."

"You know, you're acting pretty casual about receiving giant peas from time travelers," Josie commented.

"Well, what can you do other than accept it?"

"Hm. Fair enough."

"Alright, then," Dave concluded. "We'll set up shop outside the village and then we can begin giving you all some peas!"

"Sounds good!" Tui replied with a giant grin. "Thank you all so much! You don't really have to do this."

"Oh, we don't? Well, in that case..."

"DAVE!!" the Johnsens all snapped.

"I'm kidding!" Dave replied with a chuckle.
