Chapter 2

A few hours later, Alex heard a knock on the bedroom doorframe. He looked up from his book and saw his wife standing there.

"Alex, can I ask you a serious question?"

"Sure, Jo. Have at it."

Josie walked over to the bed and sat down, giving an embarrassed look.

"Wait a minute..." Alex suddenly said aloud in thought. "I know that face. That's the face you gave when you first suggested repopulating the planet!"

She smiled a bit and grabbed his hand.

"Well, that's kinda what I wanted to talk about."

"What do you mean?"

"Well... if we really want to repopulate Earth, we're going to need more than one child."

"Yeah, I know."

"Well, it's been a few years since our only child was born, Alex..."

"Hey, it's not like we haven't been trying. And believe me, I've definitely enjoyed trying!"

She playfully punched him in the shoulder and gave a small laugh. God, Alex loved that laugh.

"I know we've been trying," she finally admitted. "We even made sure to always try on the anniversary of our...first time, as that clearly gave us Emma."

"Maybe we were just lucky that time, I suppose."

"Maybe... and it's not like we're infertile or something. Emma is proof of that."

"Heh. Could you imagine if you, the last woman on Earth, were unable to have kids?"

"Sheesh, that would be terrible!"

"Yeah, well, that's not the case. So, I don't know what to tell you, Jo. I guess we just gotta keep trying."

"I suppose... but still. It's been 4 years, Alex... I'm just starting to get worried, that's all."

"I know you are. But hey, we'll figure it out, eventually."

"I hope so..."

She then leaned onto Alex's shoulder, prompting him to wrap his arm around her. The couple sat there for a bit, unsure what to do or say. Finally, Alex looked at her with a smile.

"You know that I love you, right?" he asked.

"Of course I do," she replied. "And I love you, too."

"Except I love you more."

"No, I do!"

"Nuh-uh!"

"Yeah-huh!"

The two then laughed a bit before looking each other in the eyes, lost in a trance at the beauty they each saw before them. Alex placed his hand on the side of her head and softly rubbed her cheek with his thumb.

"I'm sure we'll have another kid soon," he finally told her. "We just gotta be patient."

"If you say so," she replied.

With that, Alex leaned forward and planted his lips onto hers, them each closing their eyes and enjoying the sensational feeling. It didn't take long, though, for that kiss to quickly evolve into something more. Something that they both agreed was the best part of repopulating the planet.

"LUNCH IS READY!!"

Sunflower then heard what sounded like a stampede as the humans rushed into the dining room, ready to eat their meal.

"Alright, settle down, you guys!" the flower told them all. "I made enough for everyone!"

"Well, whatever it is, it smells good!" Crazy Dave said with glee as he sat at his seat.

"That's because it's your favorite: TACOS!"

"Nice!" Fred said with excitement as he sat down, as well.

"These don't smell the same as the tacos you usually make, Sun," Josie commented.

"That's because I'm trying a new recipe," Sunflower replied. "It's something that came to me one night that I just felt like I should try."

"As long as it's delicious, I don't care," Dave said with a watery mouth as he rubbed his hands together in anticipation.

"Hey," Alex suddenly said with realization. "Pea? Wally? Mine? What are you guys doing here?"

Sure enough, the Plants were each sitting on the table, right next to the tacos.

"I figured since they helped us out so well this morning," Sunflower explained, "they could enjoy the meal as their reward!"

"I didn't know Plants ate human food," Fred told them with raised eyebrows. "I thought all you needed was plant food, water, and sunlight."

"That's all we need to stay healthy," Wall-Nut explained. "But we'll just classify this as a cheat day."

"Can we just eat already??" Dave asked everyone.

"Hold on a second," Alex told him. "We gotta pray, first."

Dave gave a childish groan and leaned back into his chair, causing Emma to giggle at his silliness.

"I'll make it quick," Alex assured him.

The humans and Plants all held hands (and leaves) and closed their eyes.

"God, we thank you for another beautiful day," Alex prayed. "We thank you for this beautiful meal and we ask you to let it nourish us and give us the strength to survive. Amen."

"Amen!" everyone repeated as they opened their eyes and released their grips.

"Can we eat now??" Dave asked.

"Yes, we can eat!" Sunflower replied.

With that, everyone grabbed some tacos from the plate in the center of the table and started digging in. Alex took one bite and chewed it up a bit before pausing and letting the flavor sit in his mouth.

"Oh my...!" he gasped as he looked at the taco. "This is... this is..."

"...the best taco I've ever eaten!" Josie finished with a similar look on her face.

"Agreed!" Fred replied before taking more bites of his taco.

"Yummy!" Emma called out as she bit into hers.

Dave would've given his two cents, but he was already on his 3rd taco.

"Holy...!" Peashooter said in awe with a full mouth as he turned towards Sunflower. "These ARE delicious!!"

Wall-Nut and Potato Mine were too busy scarfing down tacos, themselves, to say anything, but it was safe to say they agreed.

"Huh," Sunflower said with shock as she picked up a taco. "I mean, I know I make good food, but... Oh!!"

Her thought was cut off as she took a bite, herself. She rarely ate her own food, but it was never as good as it was right now!

The rest of the meal was silent, save for the loud scarfing and munching of tacos, as well as an occasional smack on the arm to prevent someone from taking a taco from them. Finally, after 5 minutes, all the tacos were gone, leaving 5 humans and 4 plants completely stuffed.

"Those... were amazing!" Alex told Sunflower as he wiped taco grease off his mouth.

"What was the secret ingredient?" Fred asked. "Was it crack? Because I feel like it was crack."

"No, it wasn't crack," Sunflower replied. "It was that stuff on the counter."

They all turned towards the counter and saw a small, baby food-size jar of green paste sitting there.

"It's a rare special concoction added to the meat to make it taste better," she explained. "It's so rare, in fact, that I can't make any more for a long while, so we'll need to use it as sparingly as DAVEWHATAREYOUDOING????"

By then, it was too late; the lunatic was at the counter, eating all the paste as fast as humanly possible. Alex ran over to him to try and get the jar out of his hand, but Dave just kept turning his body to stay out of Alex's reach. Finally, the jar was empty, leaving everyone but Crazy Dave staring in disbelief.

"I can not believe you just did that to us!" Josie told him with anger. "Now nobody is going to have those tacos for a long time!"

"Worth it," Dave replied as he licked his fingers clean.

"Well, that's just great," Sunflower said with disgust. "That jar was supposed to last a year! Now what are we supposed to do?"

"Simple," Dave replied as he put the jar back on the counter. "We go back in time to before we ate those tacos and we eat them again!"

"Yeah, real funny, Dave," Fred scoffed as he got up from his seat.

"C'mon, Emma," Josie told her daughter as she took her out of her seat. "Let's watch some Barney."

"But I want more tacos!" Emma whined.

"Sorry, sweetie," Josie replied as she gave Dave a cold look. "We won't be having those tacos again for a while."

"C'mon, guys! I'm serious! We'll just go back in time and-"

"Dave, that's crazy even for you," Alex told him as he stood up and left the room.

Soon, Dave was standing all alone in the kitchen. Even the Plants were mad enough to where they left the room.

"I can't believe he would just do that," Alex told Fred as they sat on the couch as Josie put in the VHS tape.

"Well, it's Crazy Dave we're talking about, here. I can't be too shocked."

"Still... I just wish he had thought about his actions first."

"I get the feeling that if he did that, he'd just be 'Dave' and not 'Crazy Dave', you know?"

"I guess... I just wish we could have more of those tacos."

They all saw Dave pass through the living room to go into the garage. He had a determined look on his face.

"What's he up to, now?" Josie asked as she sat next to Alex on the couch.

"Who knows? Maybe he's just blowing off steam."

"Why? We're the ones angry, not him."

"Maybe he's angry at himself."

"Maybe."

With that, they sat there as Emma watched and enjoyed the show, singing along whenever she could.

A while later, Dave came out of the garage with a grin on his face.

"I've got something to show you all!" he said with excitement in his voice.

"What is it?" Alex asked.

"Get Sun, Pea, Wally, and Mine and I'll show you!"

The gang all looked at each other and shrugged. They each got up and went to the basement to gather the Plants. After calling each of them over on the railway and explaining that Dave has a surprise, they each carried them up the stairs and into the garage, where Crazy Dave was standing in front of a giant tarp that seemed to be covering something big and bulky.

"First off," he explained, "I'm really sorry for how I acted at lunch. I shouldn't have eaten all that paste, and I truly do apologize."

"Well, thanks," Fred replied, "but that doesn't give us our tacos back."

"You're right," Dave admitted. "Apologizing won't get the tacos back; however, THIS will!"

He yanked down on the tarp and the whole thing fell off, revealing an old, beat-up RV.

"I know you're Crazy Dave and all," Josie told him, "but you're not making any sense here."

"Hold on..." Dave murmured as he reached into his pocket and rummaged around. Finally, he pulled out what looked like a keyring. Attached to the ring was what looked like a remote. He pressed a button on it and the engine suddenly roared to life! The headlights also turned on and computerized beeping could be heard.

"Greetings," a computerized female voice suddenly said. "I am the Portable Energy Neutralizing Neutralizer and Yogurt-maker. But for conveniency's sake, you may refer to me as PENNY."

"PENNY over here," Dave continued, "is our ticket to getting those tacos back!"

"What are you talking about?" Alex asked with curiosity.

"PENNY isn't some normal automotive. Oh, no, no. She's actually a TIME MACHINE!!"

Everyone just looked at each other with confusion and disbelief.

"We can use her to go back in time to before we ate the tacos and then eat them again! Just like I suggested!"

"So let me get this straight," Josie said with her eyes closed and fingers on her temples. "You're saying you've had the technology to create a time machine, and instead of using it to stop a zombie apocalypse, you use it to eat tacos??"

Dave just stared at her in thought.

"Well, when you put it like that... it's a great idea!"

"Dave, c'mon!" Sunflower told him. "The tacos were amazing, but it's not worth going back in time to eat them again! Let's just wait until I can make more paste."

"I agree," Alex told him. "We'll survive without them for now."

Everyone else nodded in agreement.

"Fine. Have it your way," Dave told them all with a shrug. He then walked towards PENNY.

"Dave, what are you doing?" Peashooter asked.

"Since you guys want to wait, I'll just go by myself! That way, I can eat all the tacos on my own, right now, leaving you all with none!"

As he got closer to the driver's door, everyone looked at each other, waiting for someone to say something. Finally, as he opened the door, Alex sighed.

"We'll go, eat the tacos, and come right back?" he asked.

"That's the plan!" Dave replied. "Like we never even left!"

"Then screw it; I'm in!"

"Alex!" Josie gasped.

"I'll be sure to save you some when I come back!" he told her as he set Sunflower down and walked to the RV.

"You wish!" she replied as she placed down Wall-Nut and chased after him.

"Wait up!" Fred called as he set down Potato Mine and ran.

Peashooter looked up at Emma and smiled.

"Ready to eat more of those delicious tacos?" he asked.

"YAAAAY!" she replied as she jumped up and down with glee.

"Whoa whoa! Easy! Don't drop me!" he told her. "Now, let's get over there!"

Emma then ran towards her family as the rest of the Plants started hopping along after them. Finally all 9 passengers were on board. The Johnsens and Plants were all shocked at how roomy Penny was. There was a couch, a table, a TV, and even a mini-fridge!

"Alright, let's go!" Dave told them all as he pressed some buttons on PENNY.

"Let me postulate," PENNY told them. "Dave wants to go back in time and eat his tacos... again..."

"She's so smart!" Dave said with father pride. "Now, let's go get those tacos!"

The whole vehicle started to shake, surprising everyone on board! A bright light could be seen illuminating from outside the vehicle, and it felt like the RV was moving.

"Here we GOOOOOOOO!!!" Dave shouted as everyone was pushed towards the back of the vehicle!

It was as if they were traveling in a rocket, feel paralyzed as they traveled at high speeds! One thing was certain, though: these tacos would be worth it.
