They were going to let the beast in..
Caleb immediately dropped his gaze, already feeling responsible for the deaths of his peers.
Nobody said anything, but they all knew that someone was going to die.
"Please sort yourselves now. Once the metal doors open, you must remain still. The doors will be opening in thirty seconds." The 'automated' voice said.
Thea straightened her back and leaned against the wall. She wasn't going to take any chances.
She noticed Dan doing the same, along with Thea's group of friends and their partners.
"The doors will be opening in twenty seconds."
"Good luck." Thea whispered, more to herself than anyone else.
I'll try to come home to you. I miss you, mom and dad. Thea thought to herself.
"The doors will be opening in ten seconds."
Thea couldn't hear anything over her own heartbeat thumping.
The tension in the room was rising every second.
"The doors will open in five seconds."
"Four."
"Three."
"Two."
"One."
The metal doors swung open, and Thea resisted the urge to run.
They heard the growling long before they saw the creature.
It breathed heavily, letting out snorts and occasional screeches, letting everyone know that it was out for blood.
And then the beast came in.
It stalked across the room to one end of the benches, and met the eyes of any potential prey.
"Please don't hurt me..." Came a whisper from one of the people near the beast.
Thea recognised that voice.
It was James, one of the most innocent people in the class.
The creature snapped its head to look at him, its hungry eyes searching him.
It made its way to him, claws clicking as they hit the tiled floor.
Thea closed her eyes and tried to think of something happy; she didn't want to see him die.
Then the shrieks began, and the class could hear James being ripped to pieces.
Then the clicking of the claws started again, and the creature headed in Thea's direction.
Thea didn't dare to breathe or open her eyes, but she knew the beast had stopped at her; she could feel its hot breath on her skin.
Thea could feel its bloodstained claws trace across her face, tempting her to scream.
She felt a nick on her left jawbone - the creature had scratched her.
There was a loud scratching and then a high pitched noise, and the speaker crackled into life.
"Attention, we are in lockdown. Creature, return to your cage immediately."
The beast whined and slunk off, dragging the body of James with it.
There was a large clang as the metal doors slammed shut.
Thea opened her eyes, finally allowing herself to breathe.
She got up from Dan's lap and returned to her seat.
"That was close. I think that thing was ready to kill you." Dan said, with a somewhat relieved tone in his voice.
"It's weird though. It's like they stopped it on purpose so that I wouldn't get ripped to bloody shreds. Something strange is going on. Remember the prerecorded automated voice? It shouldn't know our names." Thea replied, spilling her thinking to him.
"You're right.." He said.
"Apologies, our seventh test had to run short. We will make up for it in a later test. For now, we shall move onto the eighth test."
"I wonder what it will be." Thea heard Nina whisper.
"The eighth test will require you and your partner to kiss.."
