I'm learning to dance in the rain

To hear the music

In each heartbeat

And see the beauty

In the sidewalk cracks

I'm learning to listen to each story

Buried in the notes and hidden in earbuds

To see the slump in her shoulders

And the glassiness in his eyes,

A carefully constructed prison

To keep him safe

I'm learning to hide in plain sight

To cover almost-scars with semicolons

And wear nail polish and lipstick

So no one will notice how brightly I glow

Surrounded by my own darkness

I'm learning to count the triangles,

Dotting the track, like seconds till freedom

To read and write

To laugh and love

To feel, just because

To change

I'm learning

To be me
