KHALID

We were playing Ludo along with Doyin, who had been whooping our ass since we started, we were no match for her, she was like a Ludo goddess. Bimpe and Kikiope weren't playing with us but rather they were calling the AIYEGBENI girls whom they termed as attachés, they'd been calling them consecutively and scaring the life out of those girls since we woke up this morning, we were all catching fun until we heard a slight knock from the door.

"Who could that be?" Kikiope asked no one in particular as she stood up and inched her way towards the door.

"Hey, Tunde, how are you?" Kikiope shouted in excitement as she paved way for the guy to come in. Why did he come gan? We all transferred our attention to him as he walked into the house.

"Hi, Kiki and I'm good," he replied with a soft smile before turning to us.

"Hi guys," he waved at each one of us with a smile and others waved in return awkwardly.

"So, when did you get back?" Kikiope asked as they both sat on the two-seater she'd been sitting on with Bimpe, instantly, Bimpe stood up and joined us on the dark tiles, a colour contradicting the colour of their living room that was painted in green.

Tunde turned to her, "Just this morning."

"Why is he here?" Bimpe whispered to me.

"I don't know," I whispered back, and we all turned to them forgetting about the Ludo.

"So, how was it? What of your brother?" Kikiope asked still with a warm smile on her face.

"Have they gotten close to that extent?" Doyin whispered to us.

"Like she even knows his brother?" Kunmi added.

"What's going on?" Abee asked.

"He's fine, Moye told me to greet you, she even said you and your friends should call her, so far you weren't able to come for the midterm break, video call ooo."

"You know Moye?!" We all shouted in surprise and Kikiope turned to us with a smile along with Tunde who wore a questioning look.

"Of course, she's Kiki's elder sis na," Tunde replied.

What? Like, they've gotten so close to that extent. What's going on?

"But, how did you know her?" Bimpe and Doyin asked in unison.

Kikiope readjusted her sitting position before turning to us.

"Okay, guys, Tunde is Tunji's younger bro, you sha know Moye's boyfriend Tunji, Tunde is his brother, that explains him knowing her," she explained.

I scrunched my brows while digesting the words, as my mouth opened to talk, Bimpe did, "So, you guys have known each other before Tunde came to our school?"

Kikiope nodded, "Yeah, why did you think I warmed up to him so quickly, you know I don't clinch to people, it's because I've known him before and Moye wants me to be his friend," she paused as if she was thinking before continuing, "Wait, what were you guys thinking?"

"Maybe you like him,"I responded.

Kikiope bursted into laughter, "Me, like Tunde? Trust me guys, just like Doyin would term it, I'm stone hearted, you know I don't give a damn about boys except you guys of course."

I let out the breath I didn't know I'd been holding and heaved a sigh of relief.

"But, you didn't say it from the start," Bimpe said.

Kikiope chuckled, "Well, it probably skipped my mind."

"Wow, Tunde, before we even say sorry for not treating you well, do you have feelings for Kikiope?" Kunmi inquired.

Tunde gave a smug smile before responding, "Nope, I don't have feelings for her but I have for someone else."

In a twinkle of an eye, Kunmi and Abee scurried to Tunde, I chuckled inwardly, those guys are something else.

"Who is the girl?" Kunmi queried.

"Is she in our school?" Abee added.

Kikiope waved at the girls, and they both walked into their room.

"Yayyy," I heard Kunmi and Abee shout, turning askance, they waved at me to join them and I did, seems, Tunde wouldn't be a bad guy after all.

"What's it?"

"Do you know who he likes?" Abee questioned and I shook my head in return.

Abee lowered his voice to a whisper, "It's...Bimpe."

"What!" I hollered and my eyes grew wider.

Tunde smiled at me and I shook my head in disbelief, "Like, Bimpe, as in, our own Bimpe?"

"Yes na," Kunmi clarified.

"You're in for it, see, Bimpe is just like Kikiope, no time for boys," I told him.

He looked confused.

"Just wait and see," Kunmi concluded.

Later in the evening, after we'd finished playing football, we joined the girls at the balcony, well, Tunde had been a cool guy, and he was fun to be with.

"Please, move back jare, see the way they're smelling," Bimpe said with disgust laced in her tone.

"We're not smelling na, Doyin smell me," Abee moved closer to Doyin but she stepped back hastily.

"Get away jhoor, all of you should go and take a shower," Doyin snapped.

"Okay oo," I said edging towards the door but Tunde's voice stopped me.

"Guys, should we go for Ebiripo night?"

"That'll be fun, it's tonight right?" Kunmi queried in ecstasy.

"That's what you'll know, ole, but I think it's a good idea sha," Bimpe turned to the girls with a smile.

"But, don't you think it'll be rough somehow?" Kikiope reasoned.

"It can't, just to catch fun na," Tunde tried convincing.

Kikiope raised her hand, "Okay then."

"Yayy," Doyin and Bimpe shouted while we guys rushed into the house to get prepared for the Ebiripo night.

Just because of midterm test, JANU had to scatter the whole school, our midterm test was always like exams, it always lasted for two days with classes and students rearranged.

Today, being general subjects across, I and other students from my class were to have our test in Pink class.

Stepping into SS2 Pink, it was as silent as a graveyard, classes were always quiet during test or exam period. My eyes scanned the classroom, it was just as big as mine the only difference was the presence of pillars that was used to distinguish each rows, they had four rows and two pillars. My eyes met with Abimbola, and she jumped up from her seat.

"Are you having your test here?" She asked with excitement.

"Yeah," I replied before sighting Bimpe and Kikiope enter the class.

"Come and seat with me," Abimbola said as she dragged me to her seat, her best friend Nnena raised her head from the book she'd been reading before smiling at me and I smiled in return.

"Ah, you're doing your test in our class?" Kikiope asked with one of her charming cool smiles that melted my heart.

"Yeah," I replied.

Bimpe opened her mouth to talk but the appearance of their class teacher known as Mr. Red by we technicals walked in. Sometimes I do wonder why his eyes was always red, like does he drink that much, or he doesn't get enough sleep or what?

"Everyone, get your belongings and get out the class!" He instructed and we all scampered out of the class.

He dropped our test papers on the teachers table and stayed at the entrance watching every student arranging their bags or picking their pens and other materials needed for our test.

"I'll be arranging you guys, you're to come in immediately I point at you or you hear your name," he announced and everyone grumbled in response.

"You don't have to grumble, just say it, I'm all ears."

Silence overtook the grumble that instant.

"So, Red students were mixed with pink, that's good, now, students from Red, we don't cheat in Pink, neither do we make noise or do all sort of rubbish you do in your class, if you're caught, just say goodbye to your test papers, is that understood?"

"Yes, sir", we all chorused.

"Good, now, number 1 from Red and Pink, get inside."

Our class captain and one of the ADS patients just as Kikiope and Bimpe would term it, Bella from Pink entered the class before he continued with the numbers, I was number 6 so also Kikiope so, we were to seat together.

"So, we are doing our test together," I started as we both pulled out the chair to sit.

"Turns out," she replied succinctly before Abimbola and another guy walked in, they pulled out the chairs behind us before Abimbola tapped me.

"Good thing you are here, you'll teach me ooo," she said with a convincing smile and Kikiope chuckled.

"When you'll not read why won't you look for someone to teach oo."

"Abeg, I wasn't talking to you ooo," she gesticulated with her palm and Kikiope scoffed.

"When it's not as if you are mad, you'll talk to me," Kikiope retorted and Bimpe walked in when Abimbola wanted to reply, she couldn't reply because of the glare Bimpe dashed her.

Not quite long, we were all arranged and our test papers were distributed. Silence descended on the class that moment as we all filled in our details into the paper that contained the first three general subjects; English, Maths and Computer, we were to answer fifteen questions each and fill in the gaps.

I was surprised by what greeted me when I stepped into the house. My mom was actually sitting on the sofa watching a movie, I rubbed my palm across my face in an attempt to be sure that I wasn't dreaming, like the last time I set my eyes on her was early last month.

"Mom!" I shrieked in excitement as I ran to her, she got up and opened her arm widely for me.

"Khalid, that's enough," she said while releasing herself from my grip after some minutes.

"When did you get back?" I inquired as we both sat down.

"This afternoon, go and change your clothes then we can talk," she instructed and I obeyed, I grinned foolishly as I walked out of our large living room, our house was the biggest and finest in the whole GRA mainly because my parents were rich and all they cared about was making money.

Seeing my mom still astounded me, she never came home unannounced, always travelling from one country to another on a business trip, she was an auditor so, her job entailed travelling a lot and my Dad was mostly based in Canada, the headquarters of his construction company but most times too he had to go to other countries; main reason we weren't staying with him.

After taking my shower and changing into a blue T-shirt on white shorts, I walked out of my room only to bump into someone.

"Khalid, you're back?" Aunt Sofia asked in surprise. I raised up my head to look at her, she was in a pink short gown with her long hair packed into a bun, she was someone blessed with a very long and full hair that I sometimes believed was too much for her elfin face so, she rarely had time to plait her hair and as such always packed it up.

"Yeah, I didn't know you were home, don't you have any shift today?"

She shook her head, "I'm done with it, so, I'm free till tomorrow evening."

"Wow, that's nice, maybe we can have a movie night," I suggested, and she nodded in return, we always had movie nights whenever she was off which was once in a blue moon, most times, her day off always ended in the evening and not till the following day.

"Sure, anyway, have you seen your mom?"

"Yup," a smile appeared on my face, and she nodded.

"I have to do some things, I'll join you guys in the living room when I'm done," she said while ambling towards her room which was opposite mine, we just had numerous rooms in my house, the only ones in use was mainly mine and Aunt Sofia's own. Others were just useless. I was practically the only person living in the big house, we didn't have house helps or maid but only cleaners who only came in the mornings to clean the house and leave for their various abode.

She didn't wait for my response, so, I just smiled and walked to the living room with joy.

"So, how have you been?" Mom asked as I sat on the sofa beside hers.

"Good and you? Why did you come home?"

"I'm on a break this week but I'll be going to Ukraine by next week, I'll just use that medium to visit my parents," she answered and I smiled faintly, I knew her presence was too good to be true but looking at the brighter side, she would be around for a whole week, that was the longest she'd stayed in a long time.

"Oh, that's nice," I commented. I missed my grandparents too, the last time we met was maybe three years ago when they visited.

"So, we'll be able to catch up , what did I miss, hope I didn't miss anything important?" She readjusted her sitting position and turned to me squarely.

You've always missed the important things in my life, I thought.

"Nothing much, well, my friends and I went out for competitions last week."

"Oh, that's nice, so, how was it?"

"Good, very good, we won lot of prizes, Doyin and I were given tablets along with 20, 000 though Doyin already collected buckets and a gold cup, Abee and Kunmi were given the biggest size of a spelling Bee dictionary with the same amount of money too while Bimpe and Kikiope received 50, 000 with an Oxford Dictionary each," I explained even though I was certain she couldn't remember any of them except Kikiope.

"Wow, that's good," she exclaimed and I nodded in return before Aunt Sofia appeared.

"I can see you guys are enjoying yourselves," she said while sitting on the couch adjacent to the sofas we were sitting on.

"Yeah, I've really missed the feel of home," Mom responded.

"Indeed," I muttered.

"Home is the best, but don't you think you should reduce the rate at which you keep traveling around, you've made enough money already and my brother is still making more, Khalid needs you, don't you think..."

Mom cut in, "Sofia, stop, don't talk about this matter again, what would you guys want for dinner," she swiftly changed the topic and turned to me.

From the start, I'd known Mom won't listen to Aunt Sofia, she'd always avoided the discussion even when Dad mentioned it, the house had been on fire then, main reason, they weren't that much on good terms.

"Khalid" She called.

"Ma," I came out of my trance and smiled at her.

"I'm asking for what you'll like to eat, I'll prepare it."

Did I just hear that right? Like, my mom wants to cook dinner, she wants to cook for everyone, what came over her? I could vividly recall the last time she cooked was in my junior school days, Aunt Sofia always did the cooking after one of the maids we'd employed then had almost poisoned us, that explains why we didn't have maids in our house.

"Are you really cooking?" Aunt Sofia queried.

"Yeah, so, just name anything you want." Something good must have happened while she was abroad.
