chapter 8

HAPPY EID MUBARAK

I'm back💃💃💃💃
I made some changes to the previous chapters, you can check it out.

KIKIOPE

Immediately the clock struck 10, I got up quickly while the others looked up at me with a questioning look.

"It's like you were impatiently waiting for the time, abi?" Bimpe started.

"Before nko, that Biology is just too boring."

"It isn't," Doyin countered.

"It can't be boring to you na!" Bimpe and I shouted in unison and she chuckled.

"Like, I can't just wait to drop that subject," I continued.

"Not only you," Bimpe added as she closed her book and proceeded to stand up.

"Wait, what time is the competition starting?" Doyin inquired.

"We were instructed to be in school by 11," Bimpe replied.

"This one that we've not even prepared our food yii, I'm certain we'll get to school late."

And we actually did, we got to school thirty-two minutes after eleven because we all argued on whom to prepare the food and clean the house, at the end Bimpe and I prepared our meal while the others cleaned the house, while eating, we'd been so engrossed in our discussion until Khalid reminded us that we were late. Quickly, we all rushed into the bathroom before Khalid called his dad's driver who drove us hastily to school.

Mr. Nala was really pissed off as he drove us to the town hall, immediately we alighted from his car, what greeted us was the sight of our vice principal who also looked furious but being the punks we were, we erupted into laughter. As the vice principal opened his mouth to scold us, an announcement was made, and we walked majestically into the hall even though we were late. Luckily, we weren't going to miss any of the competition.

While Mr. Nala and Bimpe stayed at the reception to register her for the essay competition, we walked into the big town hall with the vice principal instructing us to seat at a stipulated place meant for JANU college, he left for the stage as he was amongst the VIP member.

"Hi," the female students from AIYEGBENI comprehensive high school squealed while waving at the guys immediately we sat down.

Doyin and I glanced at each other.

"These people have started again," Doyin said with disgust evident in her tone.

"Abi oo, like I don't even understand what's wrong with them..." I couldn't complete the sentence as two female students from AIYEGBENI walked over to Khalid, Abee and Kunmi.

Immediately, Doyin and I fastened our gaze on them.

"Hi," the slim one between them greeted with a wide smile, they weren't familiar to any of us because we've never met them in a competition before, I guess their school local champions were probably registering for the essay or somewhere around. My guess was confirmed when I sighted the presumed local champions.

"Hey," the girl squealed while the guy went over to his seat, just then Bimpe appeared.

"These girls aren't tired of throwing themselves at our guys every time sha," Bimpe said while taking her seat beside me.

"Like, it's just so annoying, they are shameless," Doyin added as we turned to look at the girls chattering with the guys who looked like they were enjoying their company.

Doyin opened her mouth to talk, but the voice from the microphone stopped her, we all turned our attention to the announcement being made, it was to register for the quiz and spelling bee.

"Let's go ooo," Doyin shouted at the guys.

Khalid was the first to stand up, they were both representatives for the quiz while Kunmi and Abee were for spelling bees.

"That's true," I heard one of the attaché girls say to Abee as she rubbed her hand on his shoulder.

"Hey, get your filthy hands off him before I draw Nigeria map on your face," Doyin warned, Abee chuckled while the attaché eyed Doyin.

"You're not deaf ooo," Bimpe added while glaring daggers at the attaché and Abee shrugged her hand off his shoulder, with Doyin hissing loudly, she dragged Khalid away while eyeing Abee.

"Get prepared for Doyin's wrath," Kunmi said to Abee as they proceeded to leave.

"Not only her wrath but our wrath," I said while stressing more on the 'our.'

Bimpe continued, "You guys are..."

Kunmi quickly dragged Abee along with him as Bimpe and I erupted into laughter.

As soon as Bimpe opened her mouth to talk, I was called to the stage to pick up a paper stating whether to support or oppose the motion. Luckily, I chose support, me that I'd actually forgotten some pieces from the oppose before.

It wasn't long before the competition started fully, while Bimpe went to the inner side of the hall for the essay competition, the debate started fully, almost an hour later, the debate ended and the Quiz came up next.

"How was it?" I inquired while Bimpe sat by me.

"It was okay, I just pray they won't do one stupid 'ojoro' today or else we'll just destroy every thing for them."

Well, most times the instructors at many other competitions we'd attended always planned to do 'ojoro' but as the punks we were, we never allowed it. With our school being the most popular but not most populous so far students were screened thoroughly before getting admitted into JANU, many schools were jealous of us. They were green with envy and always wanted our downfall but JANU still remained the best.

"Abi oo," and they actually attempted the 'ojoro' during the spelling bee competition but Kunmi and Abee were quick to find out.

"Ma, please, pronounce the words well for us, I've been noticing you use one fake accent for us whereas you use the normal accent for other schools," Kunmi stated, the whole hall groaned at this.

Just then, Bimpe and I stood up, "That's true," we both shouted and the whole hall grumbled yet again, the instructor looked mortified and as she proceeded to talk, Abee did before her.

"I'm so sorry ma, forgive my partner, but please, take to his advice too," he said quietly and sweetly that someone might have mistaken he was truly apologizing.

💢💢💢💢💢💢💢💢💢

Immediately we walked into the house, I grabbed my music box and tuned it to 'Scatter' by Fireboy, instantly, others jumped to their feet, Khalid and Bimpe quickly ran to our mini wine cellar and came back with a fruit wine and cups, after distributing it to everyone, we all scattered just like the song, noise filled the whole neighbourhood as we kept on shouting and dancing.

Main reason our brains scattered was because we won the competition, while Bimpe, Khalid, Doyin and I came first, Kunmi and Abee came second and it was all because of that idiotic fake accent instructor but nevertheless our school still won, the only thing left for our school to be crowned best during this season is the football match.

Hours later, when we were all weary and tired, we slumped onto the chairs and then slept off only to open our eyes the following morning.

I was the first to wake up, pushing Bimpe's heavy body away from mine to the cold  floor, her body made a heavy fall accompanied by a loud thud.

"Haaaaaaa," Bimpe shrieked making everyone wake up, I'm certain the whole neighbourhood would have heard her voice.

"What is it gan? Someone cannot even sleep without you behaving like the goat you are," Kunmi grunted as he got up from the cold floor.

"You're foolish, ode oshi," Bimpe eyed him as Doyin got up from the sofa she'd been sleeping on, while Bimpe and I had slept on the three seater, Khalid and Abee had fallen asleep on the two-seater while Kunmi slept on the most suitable place for him; the floor.

"But, Kikiope why did you have to wake up so early?" Khalid questioned and I pursed my lips before looking up at the wall clock.

"It's 8 already and you're saying it's early, have you guys forgotten the football match is 11: 00 pm, and we have to get to school early," I hinted and the girls nodded in accordance.

"Wait, we are meant to sneak into the principal's office today abi? Oya, get up everybody," Bimpe sprawled to her feet and threw one of the throw pillows at Kunmi who retaliated.

"Stand up jare, abi what's all this nonsense gan?" Doyin hollered as she got up from her sitting position.

"Abi oo," Abee added and that earned him a killing glower from Doyin.

"Mr. Man, I didn't put your mouth there, fool!" She stamped her foot on the floor and headed towards the kitchen while we all erupted into laughter, Bimpe and Kunmi had stopped their childish banter then.

"Omo, that was deep ooo," Khalid mocked while dabbing Abee's shoulder.

"Is like Doyin is still angry ooo," Kunmi snickered.

"What do you expect? Like you guys were practically smooching those attachès yesterday," Bimpe countered as she ended it with a long hiss.

"Ahan, that's not true na!" The boys deadpanned, I stuck out my tongue at them before Bimpe dragged me along with her to the kitchen.

This time around, we weren't late to school, like we actually got to school 9:00am still baffles me, okay, not really since we had ulterior motives; to get the gold cup from the principal's office.

On getting to school, the school was empty and dry, the security officer knew we were going for a match, so, he didn't question us but as God may have it, Mr. Nala who stayed in the school's  teachers quarters gave me the key to get him some things from the principal's office, though, our principal also lived in the school but, Mr. Nala was somehow like his puppet, okay, right-hand man.

Without further ado, Bimpe and Doyin followed me to the office, while the guys stayed at the entrance to watch over any intruder, Bimpe picked up one of the numerous gold cups on his table, hardly, would he notice any cup was missing. So, it was still to our advantage, and we didn't actually steal anything, abi, can someone still what belongs to them? Bimpe quickly dumped the cup in the bucket bag she'd intentionally brought for the cup, and then we left the principal's office.

While I went back to Mr. Nala with the guys, Doyin and Bimpe went back to my house to drop the cup, when they got back, the school was already getting full, students from other schools were also arriving. With our school being the biggest in Ogun state, the match was to be played on our school field.

After Doyin laid the wrapper she'd brought on the grass, we all sat down on the wrapper under the umbrella Bimpe had also brought. The guys were still changing, so we just chatted until we sighted the attachés from AIYEGBENI school walking up to us.

We exchanged knowing looks before the lanky attaché talked.

"Can we sit beside you guys?"

"They're using style style nii oo," Bimpe mumbled but we heard it except the attachés of course.

"You can," Doyin permitted, and they smiled before sitting by us but not under our umbrella or on our wrapper but on the grass.

It wasn't long before our players appeared on the stage as we all cheered them on, the voice of the attachés was even louder than ours.

Not quite long, the match started between our school and AIYEGBENI.

"Goal!" Doyin shouted, and we all joined in the noise, apparently, Abee had scored a goal in just twenty minutes that the match started.

"That guy is so hot," chubby attachè chanted dreamily.

"Yeah, he is but hello, he's taken," Doyin snapped her fingers over chubby attachè's face.

The attachés all turned to us with surprised looks, "Taken? Who is the stupid girl?" That was chubby attaché.

Doyin pursed her lips before replying, "Me? I'm his girlfriend, so, you can kiss the earth goodbye." Chubby attaché's colour drained that instant.

Slim and lanky attaché turned to Bimpe and I.

"Please, can you give us the contact of the other two guys," lanky attaché pointed at Khalid and Kunmi.

"Are you talking to us?" I inquired.

"Yes," the slim one replied.

Bimpe started, "Okay, just listen, 070..." hastily a pen and paper came out of their purse, and they wrote down the number gleefully.

"Goal!" This time I was the one that shouted, Kunmi just scored another goal. The attachés jumped up in joy before leaving to get something to eat. After the noise died down, Doyin talked.

"But wait, did you actually give those monkeys Kunmi and Khalid's number?"

Bimpe scoffed, "Like I know their number offhand?"

"Then, which number is that?" I asked curiously.

She smiled crookedly before talking, "A wrong number and my dead grandma's number."

"What!" Doyin and I shouted in unison with our eyes widely opened and our mouth agape.

"What is it?" Bimpe questioned with her palms opened widely. I was somehow surprised because Bimpe talked about her grandma without being sad, her grandma had died last term and it had affected Bimpe so much to the extent of her crying for weeks and even missing school.

"Wait, who will pick the call?" I asked still somehow amazed.

"Ghost," she simply replied.

"You're sick," Doyin joked.

"Anyway, I'll pick it and you guys will also make some noise in the background, we'll scare the life out of them, even after that, we'll keep calling and tormenting them."

I shook my head in disbelief, "Bimpe, you're evil."

"We are all evil," she joked in return.

"But, those girls won't survive it oo," Doyin said and I chortled.

"That's their...Goal!" Bimpe screamed her lungs out, this time around it was Khalid.

The attachés got back when the guys came back for a break, instantly, the attachés started gluing themselves to them like glue while rambling with fake laughter and the likes.

When they went back for the second half, the attachés squealed like the mad dogs they were only for us to realize they actually shouted because Kunmi scored a goal, like the idiots weren't cheering for their school but for another school.

At the end of the match, we won with a number of 5 goals on our side and a goal from the AIYEGBENI.

On getting home again, Bimpe tuned my music box to 'Bana' by Niniola, while we kept on dancing, screaming and celebrating, we didn't notice the time Mama D entered.

"Well done ooo,'" she greeted and I immediately turned off the music box and we all greeted her simultaneously.

"What made you guys so happy?" She inquired with a smile and I lifted my brows, like my mom could somehow sound nice, well, she always sounded nice to other people but not to her children.

"We were just celebrating the competitions we won," Bimpe answered and Mama D smiled, actually, she knew all my friends, I'd introduced them to her back in junior school when she came for something I still didn't understand till today.

"That's really nice, will you guys like to celebrate at my bar? You'll have pepper soup and some drinks, then you can entertain us with this your dance," she proposed and I glanced at my friends who seemed amused by the offer.

As I opened my mouth to decline, they impeded me, "Yes, ma," they all consented concurrently.

💢💢💢💢💢💢💢💢

"I still can't forget Mama D's pepper soup, she's such a great cook, no wonder you got your skills from her, you're enjoying ooo, like you even have a mother to prepare delicious meals for you, it's sheer luck, unlike me, who..." Abee said sadly, his bright face instantly darkened and tension filled the air. His mother was a sensitive topic to him. Abee had always blamed himself for the death of his mother.

"You're funny, the last time my mum entered the kitchen to cook a meal for me was, I think, primary school, Moye had been the one who always cooked our meal since her first year in junior school." I said while hoping it would clear the air but it didn't, the silence in the room became heavy.

"Is that not our junior year book?" Bimpe said in an attempt to grip everyone's attention, and she actually did as she stood up and walked inside the house only to come back minutes later with the year book.

Actually, we were all seated round a plastic table in the balcony enjoying the cool breeze of the night.

"I said it," she flipped through the pages, and we all fastened our eyes on her, I think she found a way to clear the air.

"Look at this idiot, like Kunmi was just so ugly, dirty and short then, now he's forming big boy for us, remind me, how did become friends with this pig?" Bimpe said, and we all erupted into laughter while Kunmi threw her a scowl.

"Don't forget he practically begged us to be his friend in JSS1 when Khalid brought him and Abee with running nose," Doyin added, and we all laughed again including Abee.

Kunmi snatched the year book from Bimpe and he flipped through it, "See, the goat talking oo, just take a look at how ugly she was then, what am I even saying, you're still ugly, see her long neck like giraffe," he pointed the book at every one of us.

"Lame, your come back is so lame, think of something better to say," Bimpe retorted, and we all bursted into a shrill laughter, Kunmi soon joined us and his voice overshadowed others, we all kept quiet, but he still kept on.

"Hope this guy is not mad bayii? Abi so shese ja nii(Did he just let loose)" Bimpe asked with a concerned look, and we chuckled, like the two of them are really something.

I collected the book from Kunmi while he glared at Bimpe, soon, they engaged in a glaring competition.

"But, you guys were very short then, I've always been taller than Khalid, like you guys were short rabbits, how did you grow taller than us?" I inquired with a smirk.

"We're boys na," Abee replied proudly while rubbing his chin.

"E kpele(sorry) E kaabo(Welcome) we thought you were Gorillas," Doyin retorted.

"It's normal for us to be taller than you," Khalid added and I eyed him while Bimpe scoffed.

We kept on talking and reminiscing about her junior school life before we heard the whistle of the 'olode' and then decided to go to bed.

I'm back but not fully back, my school is just behaving somehow sha.
