chapter 4

KHALID

Sunday was boring as always and all I did was play games. My parents weren't at home as usual, it wasn't new to me so far all they did was come home for the night and probably have breakfast, they had little time for me, most times all we did was exchange greetings, I can't possibly remember the last time we all sat down for a tête-à-tête.

Even my parents were like housemates to each other, they rarely talk except through greetings, they were always travelling and the few times they were around, Dad would go to Mama D's bar alongside Abimbola's dad while Mom would visit her friends or rather go to a party. They were nothing like parents to me, all they did was fill my account with money without caring how I fared.

It was only my aunt that had time for me, but she was a resident doctor at the general hospital, so, practically I stayed home alone.

Staying home alone was already a part of me so it wasn't new again, sometimes, I do wish I had a sibling at least to be a company but it wasn't possible so far my parents weren't intimate.

Abimbola traipsed into my room as though it was her favourite place with a huge smile and I sighed, just what on earth was she looking for? She was just too clingy and choking, I only decided to date her just for company at home so far she stayed right beside me, but she believes I felt something for her but it was platonic on my side.

The only person I'd ever loved doesn't like me in that way, she only believed we were best friends and again she wasn't cut out for secondary school dating, both her and Bimpe and I didn't want to push it, so I just decided to use Abimbola as a cover up at least I didn't want to ruin our friendship, the one we'd started since we were little, I can't just allow my feelings ruin everything, if I can't have her then it's better we still remain best friends as we've been.

"What are you doing here?" I queried as she jumped on the bed beside me.

"Can't I come to my boyfriend's house? Whereas I figured out you were bored," she replied with a smile.

"I wasn't entirely bored," I told her, and she nodded before moving closer to me, in a split second she smashed her lips on mine and I returned the kiss while she kissed me hungrily and wildly, her hands started roaming about and I instantly knew what she was driving at, so, I slightly pushed her back, and she groaned as I rested my back on the wall.

She inched closer again and I glared at her.

"Bimbola, I've told you several times that I'm not ready for what you're driving at," I deadpanned, and she arched her brows before chuckling.

"What kind of guy says that? Khalid I know you want me," she said with a wink before trailing her hands on my chest. And this one is still in secondary school ooo what more when she gets into the university, oma surely gbegba runs.

"You're irritating me," I bellowed before getting out of the bed.

"Khalid!" She shouted but I ignored her and picked up my Samsung phone and checked the time, it was 4:35 pm, Kikiope would have been back from church, she attended celestial, and they always came back from church late.

"Are you leaving me?" She asked as she got out of the bed.

"What does it look like?"

She sighed before talking, "Okay, I'm sorry."

"Whatever, I'm going to Kikiope's place."

She lifted her eyebrows at this and her grimace was like that of a man who was bitten into a mouldy plum. She never liked me mentioning Kikiope or even any of my friends for that matter but I cared not, I knew them before she came into the picture and Kikiope had been with me since forever.

"I want to spend time with you and you decided to visit that bastard," Anger crept into her voice and I shook my head.

"Stop calling her a bastard," I warned, but she scoffed.

"Isn't she a bastard? She ruined our perfect family," she shouted with her voice thick with conviction.

"She isn't a threat to your family, Abimbola think, your dad has never been a father to her, during the PTA meetings or stuffs like that, he represented you but never not even once did he show up for Kikiope, so, stop being selfish," I said as calmly as I could, and she stood akimbo while glowering at me.

"She stole my dad and I can't allow her steal you again," she mumbled but it was audible enough for me to hear.

I shook my head in disbelief before commenting, "You're unbelievable"

"Okay but will you allow us to go to Mama D's place tonight at least for some drinks and pepper soup and dance," she said quietly like an angel, if I didn't know she was two-faced, I might fall for her hypocrisy.

"I thought you despised Kikiope and her Mom," I uttered, and she smiled warmly.

"I hate them but not her bar, you know life is in her club, it's top-notch," she convinced.

"You can go with Abimbare as usual, bè sa sè ma n ló niyen(isn't that how you use to go),  but I'm not going with you," I told her before ambling out the room while she kept on calling my name behind me but I ignored her and quickened my pace.

She gave up at the end and I sauntered to Kikiope's place in peace.  Minutes later, I could see her house in view but then my eyes sighted her in front of the house opposite theirs with a guy laughing.

Anger welled up in me as I walked to them, she didn't quickly notice me as she kept on laughing with the guy, it wasn't until I dabbed her shoulders that she turned to me.

"Oh! Khalid, you're here," she uttered.

"Nooo, I'm still coming," I teased, and she smiled before I cast a questioning look at the guy, she understood quickly.

"Um, Tunde, this is Khalid, my best friend," she introduced and the guy smirked at me. I scrutinized him from head to toe, he was an inch taller than me but I knew he'll be dumb, he was handsome but not as handsome as me sha.

Kikiope turned to me, and she held my hand, electricity shot through me with the touch, "Khalid, this is Tunde, he just moved here last night, and he'll be resuming in our school tomorrow," that alone made me dislike the guy.

"Um, hi," he raised his palm at me with a smile.

"Hi," I responded with the fakest smile ever known, he seem to grab that I didn't like him so he just smirked at me.

"We'll see you later then," Kikiope waved at him before dragging me into her house.

The aroma from the kitchen  welcomed me as I walked into her house.

"It's Dodo, right?" I queried and she nodded.

"Yeah, beans and plantain," she replied while slumping on the two-seater, I joined her.

"You know Tunde is going to be in my class, I think he's brilliant if not the school would put him in Brown but with his grades being exceptional, he'll be resuming in my class," she rambled as her face brightened. I just hope she wasn't harbouring any feelings for the guy.

"That's nice," I commented, and she stood up, heading to the kitchen, I followed her lead as she served the beans and plantain for us, we both carried our food to the dining table.

While eating, she kept on talking about Tunde and it was only hurting my ear, I just pray this Tunde guy wouldn't tread my path.

💢💢💢💢💢💢💢💢

AY honked in front of Kikiope's house, but she didn't come out, while we all waited patiently for her arrival, a shadow covered my gaze and I looked up only to be met with a smiling Tunde. Hope it isn't what I'm thinking Sha?

My suspicion was confirmed when AY instructed him to drop his bag in the boot and he did before entering the car.

"Hey Khalid," he greeted with a smile. Why is this one greeting me?

I didn't want my dislike for him  to show, so, I returned the greetings.

"Who is he?" Kunmi and Bimpe mouthed in unison.

I opened my mouth to talk but the appearance of Kikiope stopped me as she joined Bimpe at the front.

"Why did you come out late?" Bimpe asked, and she waved it off with a brush of her palm.

"Good morning to you too," she then turned to the back and AY started the car.

"Khalid and Kunmi, you don't know you're meant to greet your Mommy abi, Àni eyin omo yiii ti baje gan (You children are so spoilt,)," she joked
before her eyes met with Tunde.

"Oh, Tunde, good morning," she flashed him a beatific smile.

"Morning, Kiki," he replied and Kunmi raised his brows at me. Wait, did he just call her Kiki and not Kikiope like everyone called her.

"Who is he?" Kunmi asked me as Kikiope turned to the front before talking with Bimpe.

"He just moved here, and he lives opposite Kikiope, I saw them talking yesterday, and she introduced him to me," I explained and Kunmi nodded.

"But, don't you think she warmed up to him so soon?" he asked and I nodded in accordance. Kikiope wasn't someone who warms up to people so early most especially new people, she doesn't like attaching herself with others.

"Yeah," I replied before we changed the subject, throughout the drive to school, Kikiope kept on talking to Bimpe and Tunde.

On getting to school, I ambled to the JETs class while the others went their way. After the class which was the end of assembly, I walked to our rendezvous for breakfast.

"Hey," Abifoluwa greeted as I sat by him while Doyin waved at me, she'd left the JETs class before me, it wasn't long before Kikiope and Bimpe appeared with that Tunde. Why did she bring him? He wasn't a part of us.

"Kikiope brought this guy again," Kunmi said to me and I furrowed my eyebrows.

"Who is he?" Abifoluwa and Doyin asked in unison.

I couldn't reply as Kikiope dropped the lunch bag or rather breakfast bag on the table and Bimpe sat by Doyin.

"Guys, this is Tunde, he's a new student," Kikiope introduced, and he smiled at others while they only waved at him.

"So, I want to take him to the canteen, he wants to buy bread and egg, and he doesn't know his way around, don't finish the food before I come back or else I'll kill you," she said with a smile before leaving with the guy without waiting for our response.

"Hmmmm," Doyin commented immediately they left.

"This is surprising," Abifoluwa added.
