chapter 3
Due to the fact that we arrived late and Khalid had to rush to the JETs class while Kunmi went to heaven knows where, Bimpe and I decided to join our mates on the plot so far they didn't go to the assembly.
"Hi," We both greeted the chief scavenger girl who was also our plot prefect.
She left the side of the ADS patients in our class and walked up to us with a smile.
"Did you write our number?" I asked and she nodded in return. Even though we didn't do anything on the plot, who loves sweeping a large area or cutting grass and doing all other cleaning stuffs every blessed day? She always ensured to mark our attendance, most times Bimpe and I do not go to plot but the plot Prefects always ensured our numbers were included in the attendance.
If it wasn't because AY's car had a fault which resulted in us getting to school late Bimpe and I won't even bother to go to the plot, this was actually the first time we went there since resumption, but we were never scolded or flogged for not tending the plot.
"Okay, thanks," Bimpe said, she smiled at us before leaving, while she instructed others to work on the plot, Bimpe and I sat under the only big tree on our plot and played with the flowers while watching the others working on the plot.
It wasn't long before we noticed the assembly had ended, so, others left the plot and we walked to our class. Seconds later, Bimpe and I left the class with my lunch bag to our usual spot. Others joined later, and we had Yam and egg sauce for breakfast before the bell was jingled for the first period.
"What are you selling?" The whole class jested immediately Abimbola walked into the class. Bimpe and I snickered before she eyed everyone and greeted our CRS teacher.
Miss Grace who was our CRS teacher had actually been the one who instructed everyone to always shout 'What are you selling?' whenever any female student walks into the class with her skirt under her breast. Normally our skirt was meant to start from our waist line but most stupid girls who wanted to attract the attention of boys or just belong do pull up their skirt to their breast, Miss Grace was the first to notice this act and she'd decided we disgrace any student that does that.
She was everyone's favourite teacher considering the fact that her class was always interesting, and she was friendly and nice. To me, she always helped me sell my cupcakes to students so far the school didn't want us selling anything but Miss Grace had decided to help me sell my cupcakes and at such most teachers believed she was the one that sold the cupcakes.
Also, she was like a relationship counsellor, one of the few teachers that didn't see any wrong in students dating unlike all those stupid ones. All this and many more was the major reason students loved her.
"So guys, do you want me to dictate the note or write it?" she inquired immediately Abimbola sat beside Nnena, they were actually in front of Bimpe and I.
"Let's write," the whole class roared.
"Okay, but I can't write it for you ooo, Kikiope, come and write," she said and I wrinkled my nose before standing up, after collecting the lesson note from her, I picked up a blue marker from the teacher's table and proceeded to write on the board.
I was left-handed and also had a very beautiful handwriting which made them turn me into the board writer, I didn't have any problem with it though so far I loved writing and was also the person who helped Miss Grace write her lesson note most times. Few teachers like 'Ìyá Ìbón' wanted to make me write their lesson notes too but I declined so far I didn't like any one of them.
Immediately I completed the note, the bell was jingled to signal warning for the end of first period, after few discussions, Miss Grace left the class and our Maths teacher walked in immediately, he couldn't even allow us to rest before coming into the class, stupid man.
After the normal greetings and other stuffs, the class started fully as he kept on explaining Logarithm.
"Sir, you didn't give us assignment," The ADS patients shouted in unison immediately our teacher got to the entrance, other students cussed them at this.
"Is it that they'll earn more marks nii abi what gan?" Bimpe uttered in annoyance.
" I don't know for them oo, ignacios! " I added and our teacher walked back into the class.
" Thanks for reminding me"
" That's what they want before," I rolled my eyes.
" Page 68 Exercise 5, 1a- 12f is your assignment," he said and the whole class screamed at this.
" That's like sixty," Bimpe told me and I nodded in agreement.
"Abi there's something wrong with this man nii, just because today is Friday now, he decided it's only assignment we'll do throughout the weekend abi," I hissed sardonically and Abimbola turned to me with scrunched eyebrows, scowling at her, she turned back to the front.
Other classes went on smoothly except Literature who also gave us an assignment, we were all instructed to write a drama on the theme 'love' and the best would be chosen as our project, by upper week Wednesday, we would present the drama on the assembly so far all Wednesdays afternoon were meant for fun, most times, we engaged in clubs and societies and many more.
"Did you guys prepare spaghetti?" Khalid questioned immediately Bimpe, Doyin and I arrived at our rendezvous, we'd just gotten back from 'Iya indomie'.
"Yeah," I replied before we all sat down.
"So, you guys will eat it alone abi?" Kunmi accused and we pouted.
"Before nko, are we the one that told you guys to eat JANU shawarma just because of your stupid girlfriends," Bimpe mocked. Bread and beans was actually what we termed JANU shawarma in our school.
"You know my girlfriend is beside you sha," Abifoluwa pointed out, and we eyed him.
"Shut up! I was referring to Khalid and Kunmi at least, they're the ones with stupid girlfriends," Bimpe told him, and he smiled.
"Kaffy is not stupid ooo," Kunmi corrected and Bimpe covered her mouth with her hand.
"Keep deceiving yourself, we all know that girl is stupid, what did you even see in her?" Bimpe challenged.
Kunmi dropped his spoon as the sunlight shone on his brown skin and folded his arms.
"I didn't see anything in her, she just asked me out and I accepted, Period" he replied before picking up his spoon. Well, Kaffy and Kunmi started dating few days back, she'd gone to his class with her cliques during our free period and had asked him out openly, Kunmi being the 'grab your copy' he was, did not dull himself and accepted without giving it any thought.
"You nko? What did you see in Abimbola?" I turned to Khalid who looked up at me. I'd been meaning to ask that question ever since they became an item.
He opened his mouth to reply but the appearance of Ìyá Ìbón stopped him. Why did this woman just decide to spoil show gan?
"All of you, I want to see you in my office now!" she interjected and left before any one of us could reply. We all squeezed our face and eyed her retreating figure.
"I'm certain it's one foolish thing she'll say oo," Doyin said, and we nodded in accordance.
"I know she's going to ask us if we're dating, that woman is something else, she's always the one monitoring every body in school, she mustn't see a boy and girl together, she'll just conclude they're dating," Abifoluwa enunciated, and we all hissed.
Minutes later after we'd finished our lunch and were satisfied, we all sauntered to her office majestically not caring if she'll scold us for coming late or not.
"Why did you come late?" She barked immediately we entered her stuffy office.
"Nothing ma," we all replied in unison, and she shoved her hands in her pocket while glaring at us before she sat down.
"Now separate yourselves in twos, a boy and a girl," she instructed, and we did as ordered. Doyin and Abifoluwa stayed side by side, Kunmi and Bimpe stayed beside them while Khalid and I were by them.
"That confirms my suspicion, I know you guys are not only friends but you're in a relationship according to the way you stayed by each other, Yes or Yes?" She alleged as the corner of her eyes crinkled.
We all exchanged glances before shrugging, we turned to her with a blank face and her ugly eyes peered on us.
" You this children, don't you knew it's too early," she said, and we all feigned coughs as we tried so hard not to laugh at her statement.
"Why are you coughing?" She raised her eyebrows.
"Something got stuck in our throat," Khalid replied with a tugging smile.
"So, it got stuck in all of you throat abi?"
We shook our head and pursed our lips in an attempt not to burst into laughter.
"Anyway, I want you to break up this instant in my presence," she continued, and we all shared looks again.
"Ma, who?" Abee inquired, and she eyed him before turning to Khalid and I.
" Starting with Khalid and Kikiope," She folded her hands under her breast and reclined on her chair.
"There's nothing going on between us," I told her, and she narrowed her eyes. At least we were telling the truth, I don't think it could ever happen between us whereas I wasn't a fan of secondary school dating.
"Hmmm, I know you're lying." She then turned to Kunmi and Bimpe, "Yes?"
"Ma, I can never date this girl," Kunmi started and Bimpe smacked his head.
"Who can date you before? With this your ugly face," she punctuated it with a hiss and Kunmi smirked at her.
"I know you like me so stop pretending," he bragged and Bimpe scoffed before lifting her full eyebrows, it was one of those things that added to her beauty, she was a natural beauty.
"Keep dreaming, it can never happen. I can never like an imbecile like you, you…"
"Keep quiet! " Ìyá Ìbón cut her short and Kunmi stuck out his tongue at Bimpe who eyed him menacingly.
"Oya, Doyin and Abifoluwa, I'm even sure about that one, everyone knows you guys have been dating since JSS1, tell me, what enter you at such a young age?"
We all exchanged looks and smiled while I tried suppressing the laughter threatening to come out, I just pray this woman won't kill us with her English.
"That's right ma but we can't just split up," Abee protested and she raised her chin before glowering at him.
"Ma, we didn't have any disagreement, so we can't just break up because you instructed us to," Doyin added and her face contorted before she banged her hands on the table.
We moved back and flinched as she jerked up.
"I tell you to do something and you're telling me rubbish," She bellowed, and we all erupted into laughter. I guess we couldn't contain her blunders again.
"Why are you laughing? Did I poo poo on my body?" She hollered as a vein popped out in her neck. Se isan woman yii oni ja loni bayii?(hope this woman's vein won't cut today like this?).
"Nothing ma," we all replied in unison as she heaved.
"So, I'm doing comedy abi? Anyway, back to you two, oya!"
Doyin and Abifoluwa turned to each other, they held their hands while looking into each other's eyes. They were a perfect sight, with Abifoluwa being three inch taller than Doyin who always had a hair cut, being the only one amongst we girls that had a hair cut, she always felt proud of herself. Back in junior school, she was somehow a tomboy but she changed when puberty set in though she still had the trait in her.
"I don't know what's wrong with this woman that she wants to die because of us, was she there when we started the whole thing?" Abifoluwa said to Doyin who was grinning while swinging their hands, we all turned to them and shook our head, apparently, they would frustrate this woman to death today.
"I don't know the problem she has ooo? When they were doing their own when they were small, it was doing them totori totori now she doesn't want us to enjoy our own, she's just jealous of us, she…" Doyin couldn't complete the sentence as the warning bell was jingled.
"Are you guys okay?" Ìyá Ìbón screamed and we smiled before proceeding to leave her office.
"Don't you dare walk out on me!" She yelled before bending down to pick her cane but before she could raise her head, we'd scampered out of her office and even bolted the door.
We all laughed mockingly as we headed to our classes while talking about the show that had happened earlier.
💢💢💢💢💢💢💢💢💢
"Don't burst it jo," I warned while pushing out my mouth.
"See, it's just one, se you want it to spoil your fine girl niii," Khalid tried convincing as he touched the only pimple on my face, the one located on my left cheek, apparently my period would come in few days time so far that was the only time a pimple appeared on my face. I just hate my period coming? Can't we just do without it?
"Don't touch it," I eyed him, but he smiled.
" Oya sorry, I want you to be fine naàni," he convinced and dashed me one of his cool smiles.
I looked away before permitting "Okay."
Immediately he touched the pimple and bursted it, the door opened and my Mom walked in.
"I'm going to the bar now and I've dropped the list of what you're to buy in the market on my bed, I'm coming home tonight so prepare dinner."
"Okay ma." I collected the money from her, and she left the room immediately.
"I even miss Mama D pepper soup," Khalid said immediately she banged the door.
"You can always go to her bar now, or better still follow her now." I responded, and he nodded.
Well, my Mom owned a very big bar, infact the most popular bar in Sagamu and people patronized her a lot, I didn't like going there due to the fact that all those useless guys were always there and her workers were nothing but prostitutes, it was practically a club, bar and brothel.
Most times she always spent her night at the bar so far there was a club house there and as such I was always the only one at home after Moye left for school, at first I was scared but it soon became a part of me, the only time I get scared is when rain pours heavily and thunder strikes.
"So, have you completed your Literature assignment?" he queried with a small smile and I turned to him while looking at his twinkling eyes. Khalid was someone whose eyes always twinkled a lot, his wink alone makes one's legs weak, he had nice nose that was perfectly set over his plump black and pink lips that always attracted someone with a sharp jaw. His mom was from Ukraine and as such he was an half-caste who always caught the attention of everyone.
"Almost, you know I have a drama I wrote while in JSS2 then, so I just have to review and fine tune it," I said while ruffling his full hair, he just had a hair cut and I'd been meaning to touch it since he arrived.
"You're the lucky one then," he said and I nodded.
"Let's go to the market," I stood up and walked to my wardrobe, picking out a short flowery gown, I wore it instantly so far I'd been wearing a pink singlet on blue bum short before, it wasn't the first time Khalid would see me like that so far we actually grew up together.
After packing my natural hair into a bun, we both walked out of my room, while he stayed in the living room, I went to my Mom's room and picked the list from her bed, minutes later, we both walked out of the house.
"Are we taking bike or Keke maruwa?" Khalid questioned when we got to the junction. We all stayed in GRA Quarters, my dad and his family stayed down the street beside Khalid's place while my place was just few minutes to the junction.
I wanted to reply but the appearance of the tricycle stopped me, we took that as a cue to board the maruwa, it wasn't long before we got to the market.
After spending about an hour roaming the market, we were already exhausted, so, we decided to go to Bimpe's place so far her house wasn't far from the market.
"It seems Bimpe's Mom is not around today if not she'll have been fighting with one of their neighbours," Khalid uttered as we walked into Bimpe's house.
They stayed in a 'face me I slap you' and as such Bimpe's Mom was always fighting with other people, her Mom is so troublesome and I think she got it from her.
"Yeah," I replied before we got to Bimpe's apartment, they stayed in a room and parlour, sometimes I do imagine how they manage so far they were four in their family, Bimpe had a younger sister who also attended our school but was in the junior class.
Khalid knocked at their door and Bimpe appeared in a short gown.
"Eeeh, kini ká pá ooo( what should we kill)? This one that you visited me today yii," She smiled widely as she ushered us into their parlour.
"Don't feel yourself oo because we didn't come to greet you, we only came to eat so far we'd almost fainted at the market," I replied and she rolled her eyes.
"Ah, sorry case, we don't have food at home." She stuck out her tongue at us.
"Then prepare something na," Khalid told her and she eyed him.
"Let's go to my Mom's bukka then at least it's just few minutes from here," she suggested and we nodded in agreement.
Ignacio- a kind of insult formed by me and my sisters, it's kinda like our thing for insulting people inspired by a movie character in a Philippine movie, so, it's not an abusive word in the dictionary 😂😂
