Chapter Three
Vera woke to see her girlfriend's side of the bed empty. She groaned in annoyance as she climbed out of bed. Even though Vera had gotten used to waking up without Zasha by her side, Vera still complained. She wanted more time to just lay in bed, awake with her girlfriend.
She pulled open the door of the Edwardian mahogany cupboard, she stared at her side of the cupboard. Her style was the same day in, day out unlike her girlfriend who had a rotation of colour.
There was an unspoken rule amongst the families, one that Vera's father had knowingly tried to convince his daughter to follow, though her choice of clothing had shifted in colour as her role in her own family shifted.
The heads of the family were to wear black clothing, the woman are supposed to wear skirts, but Vera hated skirts, when she unfortunately took over the reigns, she swapped to wearing long pants.
Vera reached into the cupboard and pulled out a fitted pant suit and a white sleeved shirt.
"Oh, you're up."
Vera turned her attention out of the cupboard "And your still home. I thought you left."
"Just about to" Zasha admitted as she opened the other door of the cupboard; colour radiating from her side.
She reached down for her sneakers.
"Tommy's gone and I told Tony to have the day off, what am I supposed to do?" Vera lost interest in her attire.
Zasha sat down on the bed as she began to pull on her shoes "I don't know." She looked up at her girlfriend "What do you normally do when I'm not home?"
"I normally have the boys with me." Vera closed the cupboard doors and turned to her girlfriend.
"Well, spend the day relaxing."
Vera rolled her eyes "Not going to happen."
"It was just a suggestion. I don't know, you'll figure it out" Zasha jumped to her feet and kissed Vera's cheek "I'll be home late tonight. I've prepared something for dinner, it doesn't need to be heated. Just eat it the way it is."
"Yes ma'am" Vera saluted Zasha.
It was Zasha's turn to roll her eyes at her girlfriend's remark.
The two females kissed before Zasha left the bedroom.
Vera sat on the porch as she listened to the silence fill the void. She felt long overdue for a break, but it came at a cost; she felt restless.
Vera had gotten used to being on the go that when she stopped, it just didn't feel the same without the company.
