Chapter Thirty-Four

They weren't actually mines that Vera had been instructed to attend, instead it was a soon to be demolished industrial area.

Tony followed the damaged road as Vera and Tommy looked for signs of anyone waiting their arrival.

Tommy pointed to a dozen of black with dark tinted window cars parked on a dying grass patch.

Vera leant forward in her seat as she peered through the windscreen window, she kept alert, but she couldn't see anyone.

Tony took caution as he parked across the road from their cars, he took caution as the tyres of the SUV hit the dirt ground. He stopped the car engine when he believed he had parked the car safely.

The three of them remained silent as they stepped out of the car.

Tommy and Vera looked for any signs of who was around, Tony stayed by the driver's side as he waited for instructions.

Vera straighten her jacket as she took a step towards a man in a suit who had just stepped out of a warehouse door.

The man straightened his jacket.

Vera moved her hands to her side as she lead both Tommy and Tony towards the man, the closer she got the more she was able to recognise who he was, he was Saint Nick; not a man of god instead a man of death, Vera had only meet him three times in her life and through whispers knew that Saint Nick was the man who only got contacted when all else fails.

Vera nodded her head at Saint Nick, Saint Nick returned a nod.

Saint Nick watched as Vera lead Tommy and Tony to the middle of the warehouse. He closed the door, and no one reacted.

Vera stopped in the middle of the warehouse; Tony tried to prepare himself for what was about to happen next while Tommy mimicked Vera's stance; his hands by his side as he kept alert.

Men in suits, men Vera recognised stepped out from the shadows and circled around Vera and her family. The men in suits held their hands behind their backs as they awaited instructions.

Vera didn't flinch nor did Tommy.

Tony tried but struggled to hide his fear.

Everyone listened as two steps of footsteps creeped closed; Saint Nick broke through the barrier of the circled men. He proudly stood behind Vera while the other set of footsteps creeped around the circle of men.

Vera noticed who he was; Mr Tonio.

"Mr Tonio, did you even think the past would come back and bite you? I knew mine would. I'm actually quite surprised it took this long." Vera remarked.

"You disobeyed orders; you know what happens when you disobey." Mr Tonio failed to mention his son's death.

"What have I done?" Vera let her eyes try to follow Mr Tonio as he stayed on the outside of the circle.

Mr Tonio held back his frustration.

"Just a shame you couldn't end the Melana line right the first time." Vera couldn't help but let a small laugh slip through her lips.

Tony swallowed hard as his heart raced.

Tommy kept his poker face, he mentally prayed that he knew what Vera was doing.

Mr Tonio stopped walking.

Vera turned to face Saint Nick; she wasn't surprised at how close he stood to her. She looked him directly in the eyes.

Saint Nick was a man who seen his share of blood spilled, just like Vera he didn't flinch at his kills though unlike Vera, he didn't care who he killed; men, woman even child, if it meant he could get his pay than he'd kill even the sweetest creature.

Vera didn't take her eyes away from his face as her eyes soaked in every detail on his face, his stubble struggling to cover years' worth of lower jaw scars, his crooked nose showing signs of years of being hit, the stubble of hair around his head proudly showing off all the scars he had gained. She watched as Saint Nick smiled, forcing his dry lips to show their severe cracks.

Tommy and Tony turned their attention to Saint Nick.

"I don't like woman who disobey orders. Everyone has a place, even filth like you." Mr Tonio spat.

Saint Nick had distracted Vera, Tony and Tommy that neither of those three had noticed Mr Tonio had entered the circle.

Vera bravely turned her back on Saint Nick, she looked at Mr Tonio.

Tommy and Tony kept their eyes darting between Saint Nick and Mr Tonio.

"And I don't like you." Vera clearly spoke.

Mr Tonio backhanded Vera.

Vera adjusted her posture as she stared Mr Tonio in the eyes "I take pride in myself and my family, can you say the same about yours?"

Mr Tonio raised his hand, ready to hit Vera again.

Vera smiled "Since this is such a fair fight, why don't I make it fairer?" She kept her gaze firm on Mr Tonio "We didn't bring weapons."

Mr Tonio didn't react instead lowered his hand.

Saint Nick knew what that meant, he understood the little things Vera was saying even without her saying it direct. Saint Nick had realised that Vera really had no fear in her, the way she stood up to Mr Tonio, the way she basked in having a small crew unlike Mr Tonio who had an endless supply of soldiers at his disposal and various tricks up his sleeve. Saint Nick hadn't suddenly grown a heart instead he had suddenly grown an understanding of who The Melana woman really was.

"Saint Nick?" Vera spoke as she refused to let her gaze leave Mr Tonio's face "I want you to do one thing for me."

Saint Nick listened; he knew better than to talk especially in front of Mr Tonio.

"Kill me quick but leave my men." Vera exhaled her final words.

Saint Nick looked at Tony, he could see fear written over the driver's face than Saint Nick looked at Tommy, he could see that Tommy was anticipating the expected.

It had only taken mere seconds for a bang of a gun to fill the silence in the warehouse, it had only taken mere seconds for Vera's lifeless body dropped to the ground and blood seeped from the back of her head.

Everyone turned their attention to Mr Tonio.

Saint Nick was the perfect distraction.

No one had expected Mr Tonio to be the one to fire the gun, no one had expected it for Vera. She knew Mr Tonio lusted to kill Vera himself, everyone else just happened to be the perfect distraction. Even Saint Nick, the man dubbed as God of Death hadn't realised that he wasn't going to be the one to end the Melana line, he didn't even realise he was just the distraction for the main attraction.

Mr Tonio had now officially ended the Melana line.
